there sure are a lot of racist posts flying about since i last visited these boards. particularly ugly are the kneejerk reactions of rednecks whose ire has been stirred up by political activist mr harawira.
harawira has a responsibility to be controversial. there are two reasons he's been getting such a hard time - reason one is that he's got the dubious honour of being in a party with some influence (and therefore has a responsibility to demonstrate party values).
reason two is the one i'm most concerned about. waiting in the wings of our society are a small but vociferous group of bigoted, selfish pakeha, who resent everything maori.
hone was wrong to write what he did. but the ugliness it stirred up is the shame of our country. the posts on these boards show ignorance and redneck racist attitudes are alive and well. |

| I think your post is too simplistic Adam.. If a Pakeha MP made the comments that Hone Harawira did against the maori people then I think most of us Pakehas would have wanted him gone as soon as possible. He is a politician??? and has responsibilities. I was shocked by his comments and repelled actually. Most maori people I know would never speak like that and are really nice.. You yourself have knee jerk reactions I feel. |

it's true rush, i am feeling some kneejerk reactions towards you.
as i said, of course what he wrote was wrong
but harawira gained influence by being antagonistic. his presence in parliament represents the frustration that maori feel. this aspect is forgotten in the avalanche of the pakeha response of "but what if i admitted to being racist?!" |

You talk of the frustration that maori feel. Maybe there are some issues but the Waitangi Tribunial is supposed to be tackling them.. I think it is only some maori that feel frustrated, most get on with their lives. We pakeha also feel frustrated by all that goes on and people like you whingeing and causing trouble where none exists.. If you see racism I see people sort of sticking to their own sorts.. It also happens with people who have money and those who don,t. We all like to be with those who think like ourselves. |

And just for the record this minority of maori that I talk about causing trouble also have prejudice to us pakehas.I have seen groups of young people fill the fottpath to make me walk in the gutter, and I have had a maori lady mouth off at me in bad language because she thought I was going the wrong way in a parking area. She actually was wrong and the roadway has been marked now.. So it obviously happens both ways. |

how can you tell who is pakeha and who is Maori to sort them so succinctly?

I think you misunderstand my comment about sticking to our own sort or people who think like us.. Now.... maori do this too. So do all groups in society. For some reason Doctors don,t fit into everyday society, rich and poor people don,t seem to mix, some maori people join our local clubs and good for them but many don,t or won,t.. I don,t think what I am saying is racism, it is an innate thing. I know I feel drawn to any people who think like I do and I like to stay away from people who keep deflating my bubble and making me feel bad. |
