Re:Trust Helen Clark Reply to this message
the way i understood it was that nz banks could not finance all the mortgages on their own so they had to borrow. rising interest rates from overseas lenders and a shortage of capital from the same meant nz banks had to raise interest rates as well. our dollar is kept artificially low relitively, so we get good returns for exports. it means imports cost us more. i dont see how a fully floating exchange rate would make a difference except getting less for exports and having cheaper imports. im no political economist though. perhaps you can enlighten me

Re:Trust Helen Clark Reply to this message
Helene Clarke is by far the most outstanding leader this country has had. When every redneck was beying for blood in Iraq, the prime Minister Kept her head and stayed out of what was a despicable attack on a civilian population who had nothing to do with the attack on the twin towers. Brash , English and Key would have had NZ in there and with the blood of innocents on our hands. This country has done extremely well under Helen during world turmoil - just ask John Key himself under who's governance did he become a multi millionaire. He is a school kid still wet behing the ears.

Well said cliftonpands.
Time for the dog to go. Hope its sooner than we think too.
The sooner the better as far as I am concerned, each day that it remains prime minister a few more people go to the wall.

Re:Trust Helen Clark Reply to this message
Jamison,
Its true that borrowing by banks may occur, but they shouldn't have too much trouble because for example the US Bank prime loan rate is currently 5%. If they think thats a credit squeeze, they should come here:)
However borrowing credit from overseas obviously exacerbates Michael Cullens money supply problem. Once inflation gets going it tends to feed upon itself.
Our dollar floats right now so its not kept artifically at any particular rate.

Re:Trust Helen Clark Reply to this message
moehauboar1 - I'm ANTI labour and ANTI Helen, but do agree that her response to Iraq was one I actually did agree with.

However, I can not fathom how you can categorically state that had National been in then Brash, English and Key would have done any other...The fact is that National were not in. It's a bit of a moot point isn't it?

re :Helene Clarke is by far the most outstanding leader this country has had..

Wow , not sure if one can base such a huge claim on one toss of a coin decision. In war issues she appeared to me as totally floundering without the slightest idea which way to go. If she got it right on the iraq point it was as much luck as anything .(in my view that is .)

The only instance i will recall her as being outstanding, is the fact that she has backed many cases of corruption and did not acted on them in a manner of decent character until absolutely forced to by circumstance, proving (to me )that holding power was more important then integrity. a leader who puts integrity second leans more toward being a tyrant in my book .

moehauboar.
Well said, Helen has worked hard for NZ, okay she is not perfect & does not always make popular choices, but she does have NZ's interests at heart. What do you think John Keys interests are, do you think him & his think big friends really care about the ordinary NZ lander,
And what about Bill English, are you really happy for him to hold the purse strings, but then there is always Rodney Hyde & Roger Douglas to back them up.
Better the one you know surely.

Re:Trust Helen Clark Reply to this message
Jamison,
If you are an importer and you need to purchase some overseas currency, you can either get it from the bank or a money trader. In fact banks come under the definition of money traders anyway. Its just the same as when you choose to shop at the corner dairy or the supermarket. The price will be different.
I hope you don't want to abolish banks?

Re: Better the one you know...

I disagree, if you know that you have been let down time and again by the one you know and you willingly put your hand up for more, then you will get more.

If you know you have been let down time and again and take a chance with change, there is a chance you may be let down again, but there is a prospect that you will not.

So the question is, do you willingly get fleeced or go down fighting?

Re:Trust Helen Clark Reply to this message
Yup and we do that already in spite of the huge tax surplus gathered by Michael Cullen over the last 9 years. I don't think it will be difficult to find ways to spend our tax money more wisely, stop buying railways and airlines would be a good start:)

Re:Trust Helen Clark Reply to this message
look up currency trading xtr. they play it like the stock market. they make wealth on the backs of the real producers, the working class, without producing a single item or offering one job.

Re:Trust Helen Clark Reply to this message
pj.1934,
If I thought Helen had the interest of NZ at heart, I would vote for her!
If she had the interest of NZ at heart when she found that her government had been elected illegally, she would have called an election immediately! instead of carrying out what can only be described an atrocity, her process of introducing retrospective legislation that made it legal. Seven years after the fact!
I must say that it was this incident, a blatant misuse of power, that made me see clearly the evil in her and her government.

Well why don't you start trading in currency Jamison. Must be plenty of opportunity when one considers the margins.
And when you have your communist government in place, you can abolish banks, and send the employess out to dig trenches or something:)Hope that makes you feel better:)
