The first thing Helen Clark did when she became PM was to lift the Government's target for debt as a percentage of GDP from 25% to 30%. Seems noone had any problem with it then.
Now when National proposes raising it from 20% to 22% to fund essential infrastructure that this government never delivered on,, that's bad? Tuis ad incoming. |

"Prime Minister Helen Clark says she accepts NZ First made a mistake when it apparently broke donations law but there is no reason to strip its leader Winston Peters of his ministerial benefits."
Wow wish I could have a boss like that!
Actually I would be more worried by Winnie's outright lies about everything:)
She is right about one thing though, Winnie is an amateur, a rather cheap one in my opinion:) |

Larry,
What Labour did to reduce debt was to continue to tax ordinanry New Zealanders at an unprecented rate. It was able to reduce the Country debt by rorting the productive segments of our economy. Cullen has said despite huge surpluses we could not afford tax cuts. He has now commenced a borrowing program to raise $13 billion dollars in debt to pay for....wait for it.... tax cuts.
The difference?
2008 is an election year. |

you should get your heads around the govt borrowing business. It is not like you or I borrowing money for a house or any consumer item.
The Bank to bank interest rate for the Japanese Yen is about 1%.
Govt loans can be for periods up to 50 years.
A billion or two borrowed for infrastructure would provide many new jobs.
The inflation rate over the life of the loan would mean that the repayment value at that time would be much less.
Possible example 1 billion in 50 years = 1 million or less in today's money.
I say roll on and borrow what you need to get the job done properly. |

Xtr,
I have significant Accounting/Audit experience.
The Auditors would have to have been aware of the deposits into NZ First's bank account unless they,
a)Didnt look at the most basic of source documents, the bank statement
b) The statements were not disclosed to or hidden from them.
I am considering a complaint to the Accountants Society regarding the most basic of failures by the Accountants.
We are being asked to believe that a very large, if not the largest credit into NZ Firsts bank account was missed for 3 years. You simply cannot reconcile your records at any point and leave out tens of thousands of dollars.
Try it with your own cheque book.
Get my point? I agree with you. Winston just digs another big hole. |

dfarrelly.
My understanding is that there was simply a failure to disclos the money. The accounting side was normal. Is that correct or not? |

Yup I've done my fair share of accounting as well.
Good luck with the Accountants Society although dear Helen has arranged it so she can lean on most sectors of society.
Mind you accountants do not generally accept or understand the doctrine of "Koha" :) |

Im not sure.
If the information was not disclosed then usually it would be a fraud. However, the Auditors appear to be saying it was "overlooked" by NZ First staff.
How many bank accounts did NZ First have?
How did the staff/Auditors account for payment of NZ First expenses if there was no source traced for the incoming funds?
ie) Winston insists the funds went to NZ First. Say they had $50k already in the bank. A further $50k, being the donations was deposited into the bank. Total in $100k. Lets say NZFirst spent $75k on election expenses. There should be a balance of $25k left.
If there was $50k already in the bank and $75k was spent, the Auditors would have to know about or be able to account for where the difference came from. That would mean they would need to be aware of all the credits into the bank account. At that time. Not later. Certainly not 3 years later.
My belief is that the SFO is enquiring into how this balance (or imbalance) came about. The allegations are that the funds were kept separate from everyday NZFirst funds and then used for purposes other than NZFirst expenses.
It is one thing not to disclose donations as required by law, but it's another thing entirely to use funds other than the purposes for which they were intended. If the funds did in fact go into NZFirsts bank account,
How did they get "missed" by everybody?
How did the accounts reconcile (or balance)?
What happened to the funds after they went to NZFirst?
Thats the SFO line. The mantra is..."Follow the money" |

| Uncle Helen is a dictator and is only looking after Helen and always has. She has no morals and standards that ajust to suit the day and situation. She is in the cameras with her $450,000 make over/air brushing and hides like a slinky cat when the problems arise and offers no support. The sooner she's gone to her overseas post the better |

Helen made an $800,000 "mistake" last election to.
Luckily for her, she was able to change the law (supported by Winston) to make sure her "mistake" became lawful.
I guess thats why she can (or has to) accept Winstons "mistake". |

You can all say what you like Helen Clark & Micheal cullen have done a lot of good for the people of NZ especially the children , the old & lower income families. On the news yesterday they very quietly said NZ is now coming out of the recession. They didn't make much of it because it it was a good point for Labour. If Keys had been in govt, it would take far longer with all the money we would have built up in debt.As for Rodney he is being goaded by the big boys to push the SFO, into delving into Peters accounts, but what do you think would come out if all the parties had to show their books. They all have dirty washing in there.
I do trust Helen Clarke more than I would trust John Keys & Bill English. With them in, the rich will just get richer & the poor poorer, you will never be sure that NZ belongs to NZ & not part of Australia which Keys appears to love so much. I just do not trust the man..sorry |

Suggest you read the book ABSOLUTE POWER by Ian Wishart.
If anybody said the same things about me I would sue til they had no blood left.
The fact that Helen has not sued, gives truth to it!!
You can tell us whether you think she is a nice person after you read the book !!! |

| isn't it interesting that the government has just closed a loophole that some empolyers exploited in kiwi saver. they were effectivly having employees pay employer contributions while pocketing the $20 tax break the government was giving. Note that national united voted against this probably to please their big business friends. shows were their interests lie. |

Deerhunter,
Good comment! And that book contravenes the Electoral Finance Act, but it looks like Helen has prevented the police from acting on it because of the publicity it would cause.
Maybe we should all make the complaint and give Ian Wishart his well deserved publicity?:) |

Keep your eye on the ball people. Every politician plays the game of trying to distract us by trashing each other and yelling loudly. Look at the real stuff.
Helen has done some pretty amazing stuff .. police/education/arts/int ernational relations/environment/hea lth/economic growth in the face of international recession.
No one party is going to get it right all the time but at least they;re trying to put in wide reaching policies for all Kiwis.
In fact, at least they have policies, which is one step ahead of National! |

maxmaxmoo,
What planet are you on? We never got Winnie's 1000 extra police, law and order is at an all time low, Helen Clarks government rode a boom time until recently and now the recession is here we have a good dose of stagflation, The health system is still so bad that you need private health insurance to be safe and they still can't staff hospitals properly and her only policy is more power with no ethics or concience. And we still haven't got a tax cut in spite of being grossly over taxed! You are winding us up right? |
