Re:Disabled people Reply to this message
What would people say to a petition to the Human Rights Commission requesting a review of our situation, as a section of society and how Government policy differs from suggested policy?

People wanting to look at what the Human Rights Commission website says about discrimination the grounds of disabilities, should go here, and click on the link for disabled people.

Re:Disabled people Reply to this message
Good on you for bring this issue up. I am a burns victum with a slight disability. Some people cant see passed the physical body and see what wonderful people there are that are disabled. They should all be admired for never giving up and trying to get some where than living off the government. Too many times you hear of people bagging those on a WINZ Benefit some dont have a choice until they can find some kind of work and they want to work too. Disabled people want a chance to show people what they can do not get hand outs they just want to be treat as anybody else.

Re:Disabled people Reply to this message
Why should disabled people get special treatment? Once upon a time we could call them cripples, but now it's all so friggin PC.

Why should they get special wheelchair access outside The Warehouse or make normal people feel guilty about having the use of two good legs by making our public transport buses have those special hydroulics that lower the entrance?

This is OUR tax dollars we are talking about. If you have hearing loss then it's your fault for going to too many AC/DC concerts; if you have a speech impediment then you ought to stop drinking hard liqour before 9am.

Re:Disabled people Reply to this message
They dont want special treatment they just want what so call normal people have the right to love and work and be treated as people. No body should have the right to discriminate those who are less forntunate and I feel sad that people judge those for face value. I would rather be friends with disabled people than those that are self centered and to self envolved to see its not whats on the outside that matters but whats on the inside. And I would rather teach my daughter to respect people whether they are so called normal or considered disabled. than be bitter and twisted. And by the way you never know if you could end up disabled by accident or disease so think about that.

Re:Disabled people Reply to this message
The very vast majority do not WANT special treatment, Moz.
And you are wrong, and possibly quite uneducated about the causes of the disabilities.

I was BORN with hearing loss and speech impediments.

I don't know where you are from, or what contact you have had with people who have disabilities, but you do not come across as a particularly tolerant person.

Re:Disabled people Reply to this message
All I am saying is that I think our hard earned tax dollars could be put to better use. I mean, I give to Telethon and the Deaf Society, but enough is enough.

How about I start a Telethon for normal people? I could, but it isn't PC enough now, is it?

Stop making me feel guilty for not going to all those heavy metal concerts (thats the real reason you're deaf) or drinking before 9am (that's the real reason you can't stand up).

We all have choices. I made mine and you made yours.

Equal rights for normal people!

I'm kidding...but apparently you don't get that by playing the devil's advocate and acting the part of an intolerant person I am actually highlighting the plight of disabled people by the use of over-the-top intolerance.

Re:Disabled people Reply to this message
hi, in relation to the policy from say NZ First Policy, to Labour and National,i had found the the labour policy was worse than the others. I myself am disabled, with ASD etc, and yes to get work is very tough, unecssarily. I have had to go political to see what could be done about the present situation, yet much does need to be done, but saddly, more 'kiwis' need to get up and say' this is enough' before much can be done. NZ first policy is ok, and the people i met there treated me better than Labour did. National are assisting me with many different issues, yet for policy, there is much to be done, plus as well, society needs to change it's own attitude on disablity as well. i went from the western society since i do not believe in taking presecribed medicine for what i have, so the Mental Health system said unless i believe in depression and drugs, they cannot help me. i went to the maori mental health services, even though i am not maori blood myself, yet the services there were far better , plus they look at what 'abilities' i did have, rather than treat me as a 'second person' so to speak.
I am hoping after November, that there could be a start to a few changes hopefully, yet over time.
disability is tough, yet through peole and society, disability is magnified unnecesarily through work, society and peoples attitude to persons with disability, besides family as well.
I do not think prescribed drugs will help as well. I do research in this area, yet more into natural way to get better.
thank for this thread.
