Well I just did a bit of research, it appears that the Labour Government has at least allowed the building of toll roads, if not encouraged them under the Land Transport Management Act 2003 and the Albany to Puhoi realignment is going to be the first one!

| .....don't worry.......they always intended to....I know an MD of a huge roading company.........been going on for years.....Labour would have announced toll even on existing roads, within months of being re-elected |

| They have already put the infrastructure in our roads a few years ago at the moment its just being used for statistics, but from what I read can be upgraded to electronic tolls buy a pre pay card and it deducts x amount each time you pass, its been in labours pipeline for eons |

Well I hope you Helen Clark supporters can see the hippocracy of the government. Spending time in parliament to gain "election points" decrying any thought of toll roads when they are planning the same themselves! If they were honest they should be crying "plaguarism"!
And on the news this morning the government talks about the Auckland Waterview Connection which will be tolled at maybe $2.00 per trip according to Michael Cullen.
"Ms King said if it went ahead could be used as a blueprint for other projects such as a new Auckland Harbour crossing or the proposed Transmission Gully Highway, north of Wellington."
So what was all the fuss about Nationals road tolling proposal again? Did I miss something here? |

| depends on where the roads are if its in places where they have good public transport and real bad congestion then fair enough i guess.....thought they make enough money off road users already though....anyone registered a motorcycle lately........ |

| The PC Labour govt already have vailed toll roads .... all our roads now have a toll on them. How did they acheive this? By putting an extra tax on our petrol to pay for Dorklands roads. |

The stupid thing with labour is they spend zillions of dollars getting the motoway from Orewa to Puhoi build and is building a tool collecting gantry just north of Orewa.
This thing will take a photo of ones number plate and someone will look through the rego records and send out a bill by post, each way will cost $1.78, (as was reported in the media. The cost of collection, mailing the bill etc is $1.70 So for each car a return of 8cents per pass under the gantry. Only a dumb labour government run by school teachers and union reps could have thought that through.
So for those who dont want to pay, just leave your number plate dirty. I came back from the north today and my car was so dirty from the mud from the road works there is no way my rego could be read. Labour is so dumb! |

Its interesting that since this furore (which most of us have most likely already forgotten) about National introducing toll roads and then the discovery that labour ALREADY HAVE TWO IN THE PIPELINE, planned and started some years ago, somehow appears to have effected the popularity of the parties in Labour's favour.
Labour's criticsm of National's toll roads was demonstrably entirely facetious and yet we heard nothing in the news that made them look silly as most certainly they were.
So how did they win that round?
Points to a number of things to me.
1. Somehow National didn't get the obvious riposte through to the public.
Was this because they didn't actually riposte? Seems unlikely, it was a fairly obvious one, or was it that the press somehow didn't carry the story?
A bit scary right? But I have had the press print very biased stories about things I have been involved with so I wouldn't rule it out.
But what also is apparent, is that Labour have an incredible publicity, research, muck raking team.
Somehow emails get stolen, conversations get recorded, policies get "found" accusations with no content seem to stick.
This is unlikely to be no coincidence.
However lets realise that a political party can only use its own resources to fund such research and muck raking - or can it?
Could it be that Labour are using the tax payers money to fuel this magnificent political machine? Is this the reason that Helen always seems to be coated with teflon?
Someone please prove to me that I am wrong! |

| If there is a choice between road tolls so that Aucklanders can drive their 4-wheel drive gas guzzlers to work a bit quicker, and the rest of the country paying higher taxes so they can do the same, then bring on the road tolls! (you can tell I live south of the Bombay Hills can't you!) |

Adam I read this thread not to be so much about whether road tolls are good or bad but more to do with the sheer hypocracy of Labour jumping oon National for suggesting it....when they themselves already have it in the pipeline...

| jj, Auckland was not running well when the power cables failed a few years back, but the rest of the country was, in fact it runs quite well without Auckland. |

| Labour has had a toll raod on the books for years. Orewa to Puhoi, I was told one drives under a gantry with cameras, Takes a pick of the number plate, then some privately owned company sends out a bill for $1.78. They keep $1.70 for their trouble and give the government 8 cents, Now that is clever work by the Clark led Labour party. Just shows how stupid they realy are. |
