Today's Poll question ...Well' should, Maori seat's be
abollished , I don't think that's a good idea. it would create the biggest uproar , As part Maori myself i have a iwi and a hapu and Whakapapa , that i idendify myself too. there are alot of non maori that probably would'nt agree
to having Maori seat's for the simple fact that they do not have Te Tikanga maori ,Iwi,hapu......Marae.... |

I say no, BUT they should not be forced on us by law. The Maori roll should remain and as long as there is enough maori registered to vote for maori seats then they should stay. If hardly anyone is on the maori roll then no more maori seats.
This will be very hard to keep on topic, should be interesting!! |

| If NZ is one country, one people why are we retaining separatist Maori seats in Parliament? It doesn't make sense. |

The Maori seats are the most racist politically sanctioned thing in Government.
Pakeha/Europeans should reject them because we don't get "English" seats in Parliament.
Maori should reject them because its basically the government saying "your to dumb to get into Parliament alone".
All other cultures/races should reject them because there are no seats reserved for them.
Maori seats are designed purely to keep a two-class New Zealand where Maori have more rights than anyone else because of their perceived grievances. |

to chris phoenix... yes... they are an act of racism... Maori seats were devised and implemented by pakeha for pakeha... like every other racist policy we have made to control maori... their lands...their natural resources... their fisheries... all policies based on race... more specifically... pakeha racial superiority... so chris phoenix... think before you bleat!!!
We shouild keep them... or maori might make up their own parliament...and we will loose our control over them...then where will we all be... ???
We might end up with a ministry for pakeha developement... but would the maori be so racist as to do that to us...??? I am almost certain they wouldnt... because history shows there are no more staunch racist than us good old pakeha...
So lets keep on making laws specific to maori... for our sakes shall we???
And then lets blame it all on maori... even though they have never enacted a single piece of legislation in this country.. and god willing ...they never will... even though the treaty shows they have every right to...
so hush hush....ssssshhhhhhhhhh.. .. someone might finger us.... lets keep it white... as in right... |

Kaituna
Every other minority race in NZ have no problem identifying who they are, or fitting in as a kiwi, without needing special seats in Govt to remind them who they are. So why do Maori?. Clark said on Breakfast this morning that to abolish the seats will be the final sever from ties to the Crown.
The Crown doesnt have much recognition left here anyway, so if this is all it takes for NZ to move forward to become a republic, then Im all for it. Keys says that after the treaty settlements are over there will be no need to have special Maori seats, and a lot of Maori leaders are saying that themselves. Keys also makes sense saying Maori will be better off joining in the one electoral franchise, as it will help them focus on all the other issues that concern everyone, not just those issues that concern Maori. A lot of Maori agree with that too. I voted yes because the sooner we become a one NZ, the better off all NZers will be. Including Maori. |

| I suspect those who disagree, dont wont to see and end to Maori grievances and move forward. Anyway it wont happen without a nation wide referendum, so if the majority vote yes, and some Maori dont like it, thats tough, because in a secular democratic society, the will of the majority rules as it should do. Anyone who doesnt respect that, soon becomes marginalised and dealt with by the will of the masses too. I wouldnt choose to be a minority taking on the masses, cause Im smart enough to know I would loose. I dont know why you are so worried about it, cause if any Maori is good enough to get elected into office, they will be. Thats the democratic way. What your suggesting is, if or when the Maori seats are abolished, then that puts paid to Maoris in Govt. I have more faith in politically minded Maori. Look whos running for the American presidency right now. An African American. I have faith that NZ will one day have a Maori New Zealander as PM too. |

| I think the Maori seats should be kept - I say this as Maori have issues that others are not affected by and the Maori candidates who stand for general seats must work for everyone. |

and to chris phonyix... every seat in parliament is 'english' as in the queen's parliament... the 'CROWN'... as in Minister of the CROWN... wakey wakey... time to rise from the ashes... and smell the english roses that are growing here...
There are those of us descendant of the settler population who have inter married into maori... our grandchildren are maori.. we cannot hate them as you do... you may need to return to england... and to live among the new hybrid roses of england ... you will enjoy your new neighbours who just arrived from the east... NOT!!!!! |

So why are all the Maori MPs in Parliament who are there on list or electorate seats (not the Maori seats) unable to represent the will/wishes of Maori?
Why is it that we require specific seats for Maori?
Also why is it racist to point out the obvious Kaituna?
FYI definition of racist from dictionary.com:
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.
The Maori seats discriminate based on race so how is it that they are not racist? |

| i still say get rid of them and give everyone the same level ground no one else gets automatic selection if anything by giving maori automatic selection there runs the risk that people can say there being rascist too others so get rid of them noting racist about wanting everyone too have a fair and balanced chance |
