National won't abolish the seats, they have said that they want to settle all the Waitangi claims first (deadline 2014) before they even look at that... and they have hinted that it would be only if Maori themselves say they don't want them (some kind of referendum I guess)... They are trying too hard to get into bed with the maori Party and to do that they need to put this stupid Brash call to get rid of the maori seats onto a permanant back burner...
If any party tried to get rid of the maori seats a hikoi that would put the seabed and foreshore hikoi to shame would be organised... |

It would be fair and reasonable to say that Maori representation over all in Parliament and Government is disproportiante in regards too those of other races, or parties over all, for want of a better word Maori Mps are minimal, to understand why is to research and look at information on the web sites that is readily available to all.
It is up to each person if they want to learn more! to get a better idea of what is happening in this country and why! There would be unrest in the country if the seats were abolished at this time. Unison is what has too happen and agreement,
Treaty Settlements and grievance issues are trying to be addressed to sort issues out in relation to Maori!
The MMP system in place today is a result of the people at that time wanting change. The minority parties be they Maori or Green etc are described as the conscience voters be it against or for!
To get rid of mmp would need a binding referendum, prior to the election and not after, but that isnt going to happen so settling for what is at hand is the reality.
If a crisis were to occur because of dumbing down or completely annihilating Maori Party politicians, there would not only be Maori protesting, there would also be the support of many non Maori as a result of!! |

Howdy again everyone.
Auto:
You make the constant arguement that the Maori seats were created by Europeans for the purposes of controlling Maori.
So why then do you still support their existance? Surely you would be happy for Europeans to rectify that mistake so that Maori are treated equally to all others? |

But you can, the maori Party will be available on your party vote list no matter where you electorate is... and I believe the maori party are considering candedates for some of the general electorates as well... |

Tis my understanding to vote for a Maori seat one has to be on the Maori roll, claiming Maori blood.
To vote for the Maori party is different, anyone from either Maori roll or General roll can.
Is that right?
Nadine .. my apologies for assuming you are female. Its humourous how some can make a judgement on others with out knowing anything about them except a couple of posts. Dont trust yourself Nadine. |

chris phoenix, the reason I agree the Maori seats should be kept is because the Maori seats are a distinctive feature of New Zealand’s electoral system and due to the nature of their origin, the abolition of the seats must be a decision made by Maori. It is obvious they are still generally supported by the Maori population because those who fill these seats are generally viewed as dedicated advocates in Parliament for Maori.
But now that the Maori seats have some influence on the political face of New Zealand the Pakeha group who originally benefited from their existence are now are calling for their abolition amid the public’s accusations of race based privileges. |

| Maori in Labour like John Tamahere etc work firstly for their European dominated party, not Maori specifically. Maori need a voice, they need representation. You may not think this is important, but 15% of the country do. We dont all think alike, and that is why the Maori seats should stay. |

If i am able to vote for the maori party without been Maori. Then the seats must stay as its every persons right to have/belong to a party. And no ones right to take that away. And i know what you are saying about judging so i apologies as well. I can see why Maori are so passionate about these topics, its just hard for europeans in New Zealand to hear others blame them for past wrongs. I hopeyou are able to see this side |

I used to find it hard, then i learnt what the NZ education system DOESNT teach us. Its the knowledge of the real history that stops people blaming for past wrongs. That, is not what its about. There is no blame on the people.
The wrongs must be righted to allow this country to move forward.
Why would anyone want to claim we are one people? We are more multicultural now than we ever have been. Its understandable that you would fight for the country, I wouldnt, he Maori also fought for this country, haha thats a joke. What was their recompense on returning home, compared to the pakeha soldier?? |

| Dont you think this is happening now, are the wrongs not been righted. Maoris where left disadvantage in the pass i agree. But why must i be disadvantaged now because of it. Can you not see anything wrong with that. I think you need to read your last posts before you say there is no blame on the people. |
