nzsp!
There are already Maori doing that, the trouble is , is that they get unheard when other things occur, and become part of the linear blanket view and are under the umberella of generalisation! does this sound familiar "OH those Maoris! they are all the same, hand outs and such like". |

is that a fact! like when a non Maori or Pakeha commit a crime or the average everyday kiwi, the same thing"all of them are the same"! another fact.
There is no dividing line between the races when it comes to certain things because certain people are either uneducated, misinformed or just basically who gives a shyte people!
there is good and bad in all people not only Maori People, to say that is just a rather pathetic statement!!! |

| Nadine, how are you being disadvantaged by Maori seats or by land being returned and compensation made? |

Auto:
So what you are in fact saying is that although the Maori seats were set up initially with the wrong motiviation, they do in fact work and should stay?
Seeing it affects everyone in New Zealand, not just Maori, shouldn't all of New Zealand have a say in the issue? |

Regarding how average NZers are being disadvantaged by land returns and compensation. Its tax money that could be used for other means to enchance the quality of life for ALL New Zealanders. |

I wonder how long it will take before we Maori can really say that wrongs have finally been put right..
When all the compensations have finally been paid out what then?...Will we still need the Maori seats or can we find some other way..so we can deal with our own issues within local council levels where I assume we do not have a huge Maori input...Just a thought |

| .. and Chris, you consider that there should be no compensation and no land returns? That it was OK for the Crown to sign a treaty and immediately breach just about every section of it, with no recourse. |

No Aotea,
However there has to be a point where it ends. Why is that Maori cannot directly say exactly how much they have lost and how much they want back?
Instead every year we are subjected to more and more claims for new things that Maori discovered they lost. Foreshore, airwaves, rivers etc. |

| so long as every maori and any other non-maori who freely chooses too, registers with the maori roll, (the only other option is to register with the general roll)this will help to keep the maori seats in parliment. so give your party vote and your list vote to maori party!!! =) |

| There is an end to it my friend, the date has been set and all must be settled. Its a good thing. But we will always debate issues around Maori/the Treaty and the Maori seats. |

| It will be good to see an end to it all. And sadly you are correct there will always be debates around Maoris. But i just hope the anger that is out there will subside one day, enough so we can say we are one people. |

The end has been set by the government. However as long as Maori perceive there to be a grievance we will never hear the end of it.
Answer this:
Despite the issues in the early days, haven't Maori benefited greatly also from allowing European settlement? Prior to it their technology level was considerably lower than other areas such as Britan.
So while there were issues at the start I dont hear any Maori complaining about any technology they have access to today. Nor access to health care, hospitals, organised police etc etc. |

| Lest we forget kiwis. NZ is the only country who has ever stuck to a treaty concerning indigenous people... We pay through the nose daily for our forefathers agreements, but anyone who has a beef with how the NZ Govt deals with treaty issues and interpretations, should have a wee look overseas and maybe they will understand that there is respect here and a willingness to resolve.... |

Chrisphoenix!
It is interesting that the same arguement is trotted out, oh well how far advanced were the Maori without the introduction of Euro/Pakeha colonisation and all the things that came with it. how dreary and boring!!
Maori were already exporting out of this colony prior too the arrival of colonial settlers a fact, not a dreamt up story!!
A sign of the times is what has happened for all when talking technology, for christs sake English and Brits werent even bathing or washing back in the day, their hygiene in history sucked.
Do not point blame out too all Maori, there are others as well not stuck in the olden days, you should get over yourself and get more informed!!
Advancement is for all, thats the whole point of the debate, it isnt happening as fast as it should be. If you do not like it Migrate!! |

Of course Maori have benefitted from european involvement, of course not all that the europeans brought with them was good for Maori too. I dont hold to your statement about technology here, then, compared to Britain though. There was no need for anything more here. This is one of those places where I get annoyed at the idea that 'we' made things better. In 'pakehas' eyes, to the pakeha, maybe, the technology of the Maori was sufficient for them, they didnt have a need for anything else. They were of course no diffferent than any other human, on seeing 'western' technology they thought they wanted it :P |

taniwha40,
it is such a pathetic statement and some people who live in this country should take time out and read a bit more history and the making of this country, instead of making dumb blanket statements!
Maori and non Maori alike! sheesh Maori had trench war fare and it was used as an example overseas!! However if the country is to be united there has to be compromise because not all people will agree!
Its an election year as well and if people are up to speed with the history of the country we live in and are really concerned about politics read about it and learn instead of whingeing and hoping it will go away!! far out! |

you dont hear us complaining about todays technology because this generation of maori is the result of years of colonisation. this is what happens when you take away our foreshore and seabeds, rivers and harbours, lands, forrests, and taonga. we end up being like pakeha.
we didnt all of a sudden just walk out of the bush in grass skirts and thought shyte, a car! a high rise apartment! we evolved just like the rest of the world. and lost everything in the process. thats our grievences. and we won't be shy about them either.
and with regards to health care, hospitals and police etc, dont forget, maori pay tax too. |
