paul.fraser!
are you just trying to be basically stubborn and naive? or would you prefer that all Maori and those who are striving for unity usurp their beliefs as well, those who descend of colonial settlers from birth?
Or are you just as disgruntled as many are and just see separatism? Laws prevail in this country which were and still are entrenched by the Crown, the NZ government okay!
Legislation and Acts of Parliament, now if you are still not happy, well just get a gun and come and shoot them all the good maori and the bad maori ! happy now??? go for your life and maybe Wasullivan and two butch and many others will help you!
We are for the children in this country myself and my family who are currently eighth gen! and I look after babies who have foetal and drug alcohol syndrome, and what do you know, they are not all Maori, got a mix at times, but it is not their identity, its innocence lost!
Ring Aunty Helen, shes another PHaarkwit in power!! |

| If we are to have a united New Zealand....one nation...one people...one big happy iwi...then I see no reason why maori cannot stand as independent mps for parties of their choice that get majority support from ALL New Zealanders. We no longer can say it is a Pakeha Nation as Kings Guard misguidedly views it. Yes our laws and parliament reflect that of Britain but it has our politicians and our laws within it and has evolved to a New Zealand Parliament and NZ law. I see no necessity for specific Maori seats. When the fear of remaining the same outweighs the fear of change only then will we grow! |

I think someone is pulling our collective leg.
This is surely a primary school English punctuation, spelling and grammar test which has been recycled.
If not, heaven help the author.
The original question reads,
"Well' should, Maori seat's be abollished, I don't that's a good idea.it would create the biggest uproar, As part Maori myself i have an iwi and a hapu and Whakapapa, that i idendify myself too.there are alot of non Maori that probably would'nt agree to having Maori seat's for the simple fact that they do not have Te Tikanga maori, iwi,hapu.......Marae.."
Redundant apostrophes in the middle of a plural word and after the first word and the incorrect double "l" should be abolished.
Question marks still have a place in a question. There are none here.
There is a full stop after "idea" and no capital letter after that; then a comma after "uproar" before the capital A in "As". There are couple of non capitalised pronouns.
"Idendify" is possibly a contender for most amusing error, but the one I really like is "would'nt". It has a huge element of fun about it which transcends the competition.
If this is not a joke then perhaps the questioner is showing the European part of the traditions of this country are being eroded from within.
Pretty soon NZ might end up with two official languages that no-one can speak properly. |

| ptrbrannigan....a little pompous don't you think? I mean,it is a reality that some people struggle with grammar. Not all have had the same bebfit of education as you or I. This does not mean we have the right to jump in and disect another persons post ridiculing them so as to elevate ourselves and put them down. Maybe the person has dyslexia or simply has not had the same advantages as you or I. I find your manner offensive and like that of a perfectionistic school ma'am and totally unnecessary....show some tolerance. What the person wrote was capable of being understood and that is all that matters. We live in an imperfect world in case you had not noticed. |

| As someone with both Maori and Pakeha anscestry I would have said keep the Maori seats till I heard Tariana telling people to give the Party both votes. Use your head, the Party will not get past 5% in the overall contest whereas giving those party votes to the Greens would mean that between them the Maori and Green party could get the Foresshore and Seabed Act reversed. If the Maori Party does not get more than 6% then a party vote for them is wasted given that they will take at least six of the Maori seats. Use your head |

At a time when Australia is investigating the viability of indigenous representation in Parliament, we're talking of dissolving the decades-old right for that representation.
I do question the need for such presence - the establishment of a Maori party, with serious affiliations to that from many Maori, and under the MMP system, will generally provide for the same degree of race representation as now, provided that the Maori party truly represents the view of Maori who would not otherwise vote for another party. |

yes they should be abolished, and so should the raciest Maori party there's no white party.
since there is maori sets there should be gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender sets as well, and maybe even IPU (invisible pink unicorn) or jedi sats (maybe a jedi council)
so the answer is simple get ride of the raciest maori sets or ad new one for every group in new zealnd.

TO mar_ja@xtra.co.nz
there a lot of typos in that post I know so here we go again
a sat was meant to be seat
a jedi seat would be a set in the parliament for those of use in the world who are part of the jedi religion and culture.
a raciest seat is a seat that is only aloud to be held by one particular race or not aloud by some race.

| Mar...allow me to interpret for you. Raciest seats are the fast ones...now you see them...then ya don't. Jedi sats are like the BattleStar type of thing. Capable of housing many politicians similar to the beehive but round and with a laser beam to destroy the planet if we do not comply with their orders. Hope that assists ma'am. |

.........yes they should be abolished, and so should the raciest Maori party there's no white party......
The reason for setting up these seats was to provide direct representation by an MP acting on their behalf in a district.
I believe the time has come, particularly under MMP, where groups of individuals can now align to political parties (of sufficient size to reach the 5% threshold) which can better represent their interests and have a say in the running of this country politically, and thus no longer need the special Maori seats.
However, I take exception to the comment about there being no white parties. The Maori seats were set up exactly along those lines - to draw a line (politically) between brown and white. No mincing of words, that's what it was for.
What is needed now, is for the Maori party to carry forward the views of enough supporters to maintain their current presence in parliament, and if that doesn't happen due to lack of numbers, then, essentially, the people have spoken. |
