tony wheal : "The Maori seats were set up exactly along those lines - to draw a line (politically) between brown and white"

You have'nt read a damn thing on this thread have you, nor are you aware of the history of these seats.

paul.fraser...you have forgotten the Maori Battalion e hoa! Who unlike the other non Maori participants in the NZ Armed Forces, were not conscripted! You forget the the Government appointed Maori Land Court e hoa, that dictates to Maori what they can and cannot do with their own land, you have also forgotten that Maori cannot borrow money from any lending institution in this country to develop their land e hoa, why! because it is Maori Land, you have again convieniently forgotten that all All Black tours to South Africa up until not so very long ago, dictated that no Maori player could be in the touring team, this was supported by the NZRU and by their silence, the so called "one country one people" electorate...this country was built and Maori development was stifled by over 150years of legislation that "was race based" and was in all instances predijucial to Maori!!! Please...paul.fraser, if you are going to pull the "one people one country" card, at least get it right! Every school, roadway, utility and major public works in this country bar a few exceptions, have come from Maori!

teoneroa...kia ora e hoa, they are not even reading your earlier comments concerning the history of the Maori seats, and how they were put in place at the time, by Govt, to negate the Maori vote! He tika to korero e hoa, how ironic, that now they want to wipe to again negat the Maori vote...wow, and they call us the seperatist!

NZ was never intended to be a seperatist country....If you understand history you will see that Maori were forced into a colonial governance outside of there own, that they did not agree to. Holding the Maori seats in Parliament is merely a statement outlining that Maori have to clean up the mess of an aparteid system imposed upon them. The Maori seats represent the only unique identity NZ has about it. What do you think foreigners come to NZ to see....McDonalds?.....

inbound 39!

all fine, its the same old debate, one such as myself lives, walks and breathes everyday.

like many others in this country, those who are of mixed origins- Maori/Celt. Who will continue to do so for the betterment of all children in this country, namely those who we look after as well, so their minds do not get poisoned or sullied. To understand that racism is taught and not bred, and too be proud of who they are, even in times of adversity, such as displayed in this forum!

The drug and alcohol addicted babies born without choice, and their loss of innocence! Interesting too see only few posters mention that they care about others children, besides their own! How compassionate and caring you linear and narrow minded people of Aotearoa/New Zealand 2008!

Read the former responses on this board, the lot and you might have some idea of what is happening, the cry is for Unity you dimwits, and if it takes the Maori Party or any party for that too happen so be it!

For those who still feel the hatred toward the Maori as a people, well suck it up brothers and sisters, because they and we are still a people! Move Forward is the call and do it hand in hand with your Maori counterparts and brethren, why not? Not all are caught in grievance and entrapment, and the "gravy train", wake up! respect the differences and the culture, because our blood is all red on the inside as well, or are some of you blue blood??

What do you do in the outside world away from cyber space?
Are you politically motivated? Are you educated? Do you know the history of this country?

Basically some of you are not, and some Maori are not! so live and learn together, hand in hand with participation and co operation, come on...you know you can , if not Migrate....out of the cr4p hole that Wasul opened up for you at the bottom of the country...... Peace to all!!

You Slavonic idiot, the Treaty of Waitangi 1840 (Part One
English version) does not even with the Maori version (part
one) give you the right to settle and live here. Ka hoki koe ki to whenua a o'u tupuna, kei haere atu koe.

as a maori i am all for the seats being given the boot.
we are one country one people i am sick of hearing some lazy maori bleating about how they missed out on this and that and then some radical from the maori party saying we deserve this and that.
I think its time that they were got rid of so we can all at least communicate with each other.
i have not yet seen a maori turn down anything from the other races like benefits hospital care and any other hand out they fast to accept these items if they so called hard up then stop smoking dope drinking beer and look after the kids like you are ment to.and anyway i wouldn't vote for anyone that has ties to tohoe they the biggests radicals out

maxspendilten1122: So you want me to speak te reo Engarahi. The language of my ancestors is legal in
Aotearoa, it is protected by Article 2 (Maori version) of
the Treaty of Waitangi 1840. No body will ever tell me to
stop speaking the language and dialect of my Waikato-Maniapoto ancestors or my Cook Island Ancestors. Till death
will I treasure and use my Reo. Kia Orana.

Talofa outou- I say leave the Maori seats where they belong -in Parliament. They have changed their role and purpose in todays society. I once used to think like Papalagi (Pakeha) who argued that these seats were racist, but having read an article in todays Sunday Star Times where the USA so called democracy is absolutely riddled with 'skulduggery' and rabid 'socialism' as practised by big business and the rich white fat cats, I say NZ at least can say it tries to accomodate the Tagata Whenua (original settlers) in its governance and political process instead of the 'couldnt care-less majority that democracy also breds' calling the tune bcause it has more wealth and numbers to vote with. Tofa.

camwilf: Ko Koe te pakeha poaka niniwa. Again the myth of
Moriori existing in Aotearoa get your bloody idiotic and nonsense facts right. The original habitants of this land
were Tini o Toi, Waitaha, and Hawea. They were assimilated
into modern Maori. Remnants of Waitaha still exist in Te Wai o Pounamu, (South Island). I am not neanderthal for it
is an anthropological fact that Maori/Polynesians are closest related to Caucasian mankind. In reply to your grossly insulting approach to me, I say in my own reo.
"Ka haere koe kai tiko Pakeha waha koiangi koe." "Tapiri
to waha koiangi e poaka niniwa koe."

What sets NZ apart from the rest of the world? It certainly isnt the british imperial rule that still, and by the looks of things, will continue to have governance over lands that are not rightfully theres to govern. History clearly outlines that there was a breach and settlements today for those breaches verify this. So i ask again....What sets NZ apart from the rest of the world?

Re:Should Maori seat's be abollished.... Reply to this message
It would be hard to imagine Helen Clark or John Key agreeing to an impromptu rap as part of their 2008 campaign launches.

For Maori Party candidates, it was another way of showing they were in touch with young Maori, whom the party is desperate to have overcome their usual reluctance to vote.

When the beat began and the call was made at yesterday's launch at Hamilton's Frankton Market, four of the seven Maori seat candidates answered.

Waiariki MP Te Ururoa Flavell, who had already shown he hadn't lost too many of his breakdancing skills, was not surprisingly the best, showing a keen sense of rhythm.

Co-leader Pita Sharples gave him a good run, stressing the importance of keeping the Maori Party in the House -- of Parliament.

Hauraki-Waikato candidate Angeline Greensill chose to sing the blues rather than rap, revealing a good voice as she said a strong Maori Party could change the law. Te Tai Tonga candidate Rahui Katene looked the least comfortable with the format but managed to get by without any embarrassment.

The party's other co-leader Tariana Turia managed to avoid the hip-hop cutting session, but she along with the four political rappers were happily dancing away to the sound of Raglan reggae maestros Cornerstone Roots soon afterwards.

Other parties, notably Labour, have had music acts at their launches, but they have usually been in halls and in somewhat formal settings.

Few would have launched their campaigns in a busy street market, but Frankton attracts a sizeable number of Maori and for the Maori Party the launch was about emphasising their connection to the grass roots.

Soon after the colourful Funky Monkeys dance group finished their routine, Mrs Turia made a point of thanking rangatahi (young adults) for their efforts at the launch. "Everything we think about is for their future," she told the audience.

As she was speaking, party staff were walking the markets trying to ensure young people there were on the electoral roll ...
