The Maori Party's leadership is describing the 2008 election as the best and possibly last chance for Maori people to have a collective impact on Parliamentary politics.
Launching their 2008 election campaign in Hamilton yesterday, co-leaders Pita Sharples and Tariana Turia said it was an exciting time for Maori in politics as they looked at the prospect of six or seven MPs in the next Parliament.
But Dr Sharples said Maori may not get too many more chances to have their voices heard in Parliament.
He said Maori people had twice looked away from Labour in recent years, to New Zealand First in 1996 and to Alliance partner Mana Motuhake in 1999, and they had twice been failed.
"I think it's really vital that our people realise that if not this time then over the next three years that this is an opportunity that has to be taken now, otherwise it's gone," Dr Sharples said.
"If we don't build this capacity now, the chance is probably gone forever."
The Maori Party currently has four MPs, all in Maori seats. It has high hopes of winning all seven this election, and is currently ahead in the polls in six and neck-and-neck in the seventh, Hauraki-Waikato.
Mrs Turia said the party also wanted to improve its share of the party vote, which was less than 3 percent at the last election.
"We've had a lot of non-Maori contacting our office because they don't know they can give their party vote to us.
"Our interest is in gaining the party vote from as many people as possible, and that includes everybody who lives here."
Dr Sharples and party president Whatarangi Winiata said one reason the Maori Party could succeed where NZ First and Mana Motuhake failed was its position of independence.
"The last three years have produced something new: the first Parliamentary session that has witnessed a strong and independent Maori voice day after day," Prof Winiata said.
He said the party's voting patterns in the last Parliament showed its independence. The f ... |

Like any other race of indigenous people. If you remove traditional values of a race through rape, murder and pilage, you will eventually achieve a goal....Apartheid. Thats what has happened to Maori and history encounters from Pakeha and maori have proved many of these injustices. The maori seats have a right in parliament and there place is warranted by the mere fact that they are an indigenous race of people of whom are the true guardians of this country. Wouldnt it make sense to have a guardian in parliament, especially when we can clearly see that Money is what prioritise the areas of focus for a politician. This is only the beginning of a greater future for the Maori party.

I totally agree with this. If Maori want representation in Parliament they should have the same processes as Pakeha. Maori All Blacks, Maori seats in parliament..when will it end? We are supposed to be united under one flag.

A flag imposed on Maori. The Maori seats should stay for the very fact that legislation within this country has recognised its authority and place within a legal, environmental, social, political and whatever else you can think of entity. Many Pakeha respect Maori and believe they truely do set the rest of NZ apart from the rest of the world. Keep the Maori seats and go hard.

Equality went out the window in 1840 when Pakeha decided to change the agreement. Thats how i see it. Maori were behind the ball right from start-go. So wheres the equality? Of course the seats should remain. However, not for revenge purposes, but to uphold the intended purpose of the treaty of waitangi which was to live harmoniously in the country that Maori are true governors of. Lets be honest here, even Pakeha scholars make references to Maori and there right to true governance of NZ.
