A Nelson man who was mooning while car surfing has been badly injured after falling from the car's roof.
Kane Heal, 22, was in Christchurch Hospital's intensive care unit on Monday after the accident in North Canterbury on Saturday morning.
A Christchurch Hospital spokeswoman declined to comment on the nature of his injuries, but police said on Saturday that Mr Heal suffered serious facial injuries when he slid along the road.
Senior Constable Chris Hughey of Hanmer Springs police said on Saturday Mr Heal had his trousers down and was mooning other vehicles from the car's roof when he fell off at a speed of at least 80kmh.
He said Mr Heal required facial surgery after sliding 20m face-first along State Highway 7 about 10km north of the Hanmer Springs turnoff.
Mr Hughey said Mr Heal had climbed on top of a Nissan car driven by his girlfriend as they travelled from Nelson to Christchurch.
He was flown to hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

| Yep. We decent honest tax payers, will shell out probably tens of thousands for an idiot like this, yet I have to wait for months foer a simple procedure to correct a minor medical condition that I have. The worst thing is, my condition if left untreated could become life threatening. This car surfing mooner should be made t opay every dollar of his care, since the whole thing was completely avoidable. (if you are a normal person) |

Hey n.rblair@xtra.co.nz, I'm sorry about your medical condition.
I suffered accident last year, 3 months hospitalized. Went back to work 10months afterwards. I couldn't stand it at home. Long story short, due to complications, Ive required reconstructive surgery. Now get this. They have approved and I have had the surgery to put 3 'balloons' into my thigh to expand tissue. Now I have to get approval for the surgery to REMOVE them and fix the mess. Which, incidentally, wasn't directly caused by the accident. |

| dumb move, you gotta have a laugh though, inlight of there was no fatality. I'm just so glad that now that I'm older that some of the dumb things I did when I was a youngster didn't amount to anything serious when it could have. |

Well I'm not going to jump on the band wagon of saying he is using up our taxes / hospital bed etc... The guy did something stupid and has paid a high price. I remember my brother climbing out of a moving car through the back window and over the roof and inside the other passenger window. Lucky for him he didn't end up painting the pavement with his face!!!
Now hes a sucessful businessman and one of those high tax payers supporting this thrill seekers hospital treatment. |

Cars have doors and seats for passengers, any idiot that does that deserves everything he or she gets.
The driver could have avoide the whole thing so is just as stupid.
It is not the behaviour of sane ,human beings.
Both ,obviously have metal health issues. |

Well not necessarily. Some people are born thrill seekers and take stupid risks in life. Others lead a more controlled life. Mental health doesn't need to come into it. |

When my brother and I were teens (I was a tomboy!) we both had a cortina MK2 and we used to play a game called Americans were we would try and take each other by driving on the wrong side of the road and the dare was to see who would chicken out first!
Fortunately for us we lived to tell the story as did every other road user at that time.
Some of us do stupid things in life. Thats how life is. |

Charge the Driver of the car for attempted manslaughter!!Because . . . what other type of wannabe fool would drive at 80kms with her supposed beloved boyfriend mooning on a car roof? I have nothing but contempt for the pair of them! But i do feel sorry for their families and the people who had to clean ole 'Mooners' face off the road.
Let me tell this age group something ... YOU so called people of our future! NONE of YOU can drive! NONE of you!! The GIRLS especially!! The Girls all want to be like the guys and be bad. YOU ARENT!!
When you find yourself standing before a Court of law and find yourself in Prison. Believe me you WILL learn the meaning of the word BAD GIRL.
As for the males their cosequences are almost instant. They usually end up in hospital or the morgue so they dont have to worry about the violations the girlies do.!!???
Its not nice is it, making fun of someone elses demise! But well... when they leave themselves so open. Whats a good natured person to do with it!
Sorry to the parents I hope your son gets better. And makes better choices next time! |
