Grieving family denied state house Reply to this message
Porirua's deputy mayor is furious a family, who lost a young child in a fire that destroyed their home, has been denied the chance for a state house because of a $3000 debt.

The family of ten's home on Hereford Street burned down on November 5.

Lotu *** asoaia was able to save two of her children, but was unable to get to her two-year-old daughter Mautua.

Porirua deputy mayor Litea Ah Hoi has called on Housing New Zealand to "show some compassion" to the grieving family, The Dominion Post reported today.

Mrs *** asoaia said her eight remaining children were spread around the area living with relatives.

She said the debt was for damage to wallpaper in a state house the family had lived in years ago.

"Of course we'll pay the debt, but I'd like to get us in a house now. We can deal with the money later."

All she wanted was for her family to be under one roof, she said.

Ms Ah Hoi has sent an angry email to Housing NZ's chief executive saying the organisation had in the past set families up in houses even though they owed money.

"This family has not even had a chance to grieve together. All they want is a house and surely Housing NZ could find them one, even in the short term.

"The last thing those kids need is to be away from their parents right now."

Housing NZ regional manager Pia Searancke could not say much because of privacy reasons.

But she confirmed an application for housing had not been lodged "as there are a number of issues the family has to work through".
what do you think fair??

They should get a house, and the people who denied her should try walking in her shoes for a day. That women has just lost a house and one of her beloved children in one go. It is unfair that they should be refused a house at this time of need just because of damage to wallpaper

Christ o bloody mighty $3000.00 debt and they don't get a house. It would be more easier for her if she left the country and came back as an imigrant, she would be housed straight away. Wake up NZ this family has been torn apart, they should be given a hand to re-unite, isn't this supposed to be a family nation. Give them a bloody house, let them get on with life together as a unit.

If it was this sort of situation then yes. I'm not a vindictive person and believe in second chances. This lady just lost her child. Wallpaper is easy to replace. A human life isn't

Is the mother a solo mum or is there a partner involved? if she is single then all the more reason to give her a house. going to be hard to look after the kids alone and deal with the pain of losing a baby

Re:Grieving family denied state house Reply to this message
twobutch has a point if the were able to do that much damage (it wouldnt have been a small hole to tik up $3000.0 debt) to the wall paper why should they give her another? she has just lost a child fair enough but as the article says she has relatives looking after her family i dont think they should be having a go at the govt over this if she had pjust paid that debt all those many years ago she wouldnt be in this suituation. and going back to "worry about the money later" im sure she wouldv said that last time too.

i'm not saying that twobutch doesn't have a point, he really does, but where is the sympathy in these people? if their child died i'm sure they (or anyone for that matter!) would want the whole family together under one roof to grieve together

Re:Grieving family denied state house Reply to this message
i have sympathy for her loss but not her suituation. there are people worse off with no family here no money in need of a house why give it to someone who can actually get by without it over someone who cant! dont mistake this as a cruel heartless statement!

Arex101 - I think with 8 kids, a job might be out of the question, but the contraception is well overdue. I'm sick of my hard earned taxes being coughed up constantly to support these people who are victims of their own stupidity.

Just give them a house, They've lost a child and a house, and why the hell would wallpaper cost $3000? I have the impression interest has been added on, and at a high rate too. And lastly the family is trustworthy, the damage was three years ago and didn't the family rescue two of the other trapped children? They deserve more respect than Lisa Kuka and the Curtis retards.

Re:Grieving family denied state house Reply to this message
I think there may be more to this story. Do they have no family to help tide them over? Greiving is different for everyone. It could be keeping them out of a job...but we do not know the facts, so I'll reserve opinion until I know what is what.

i wasn't sure if she was a single mother, but it's got to be very hard on her. they should at least let her have a house for a few months and help her get sorted out. isn't it in situations liek this one that our so called gorvernment is supposed to swoop in and save the day?

Re:Grieving family denied state house Reply to this message
Maybe if they gave the family a suitable house on the previso that they pay back so much(could even be a minimal amount)per week off the debt. Also that they also agree that if they damage housing NZ property again that they must pay debt to repair it.
