Have your say before Monday and the thread gets wiped.

It takes a long time to bring offenders to trial. The victims live in anguish and cannot move on until the matter is dealt with. They go to hell and back again reliving events.

After a harrowing long time the perpetrators are found guilty and the wait for sentancing begins.

Sentencing, well what a joke in many situations, Namby pandy sentences are handed down e.g. home detention for killing someone whilst drinking driving. poooh.

Judges live in the criminal system, they are watered down by what is put in front of them daily, they have become soft to the crime. Victims are last on the list and normally get very little for their troubles.

Victim impact statements are a waste, Do Judges really listen to their sufferings or is this just another process in the system.

Judges are a disapointment to the country. Bail is a joke, the police are constantly battling with the Judges to have offenders taken off the streets only to have them released on bail so they can commit crime again, it takes the police a lot of work to bring offenders to justice and they must feel disolutioned by the court system.

What is it goint to take to bring harsh sentences relevant to the crime.

As far as I know, the judges don't really get to decide the penalties they impose. IIRC, they have like a shopping list that run something like

assault: six months.
with a weapon: add a year
with a firearm: add a year
with intent to rob: add six months
mitigating circumstances: subtrac six months

and so on and so forth for every kind of crime. There's a limit to what they can actually sentence you to serve.

And then there's the problem that you can sentence people to 938,403 years in jail, but you have to put them somewhere and that costs money so there's an incentive to get people out ASAP too.

Judges are able to use their discression. Take this example of their use of bail that happened last week.
case no1 person denied bail for posession of marajuana with intent to sell.
Case no2 person denied bail for 3 burglaries.
Case no3 person granted bail after being charged with GBH and indecent sexual assult on a minor
