| Well...apparently the old Hamas thread got too big....it is important for both sides to the story to be told....the old thread had a lot of information and should still be utilized by those seeking the truth.I am sure JJ and Paerina will show up shortly as will Robaman,Bob Xtr and all the other regulars who made the last Hamas thread so successful. |

The basis of the Middle East peace accords between Israel and Palestinians is embedded in the outcomes of the Six Day War where Israel occupied the Golan Heights belonging to Syria ANand the Westbank and Gaza declared Palestinian Territory by the UN at the formation of the State of Israel in 1948. The UN passed two resolutions calling on Israel to immediately withdraw its forces from those territoies it occupied deeming its occupation and settlement of those lands illegal. The Fouth Geneva Convention was used as legal back up. Self defence cannot be claimed by Israel as it is the belligerent aggressor and is illegally occupying territory it is not entitled to. Palestinians due to the illegal occupation ARE entitled to oppose the occupation by use of arms....that right can be found in the Fourth Geneva Convention.
Obama has taken the direction to resolve the conflict after the tragedy of CastLead that saw thousands of innocent Palestinians killed and Gaza more or less razed to the ground. Israel currently faces 210 war crimes charges.
The Annapolis agreements, the Oslo accords and the Arab peace plan Two State Solution is what America, the EU an Arab States are pushing for Israel to allow a free, self governed Palestinian State. Hamas is the democratically elected government of Gaza and is gathering increasing support since Cast Lead in the Westbank also. It is predicted that the next elections will see Hamas oust Fatah in both territories. |

Alright then ,
while I leave the relevant news reports to the 'expert' I would like to point out just a couple of reservations lingering in my mind regarding the realities of Israel being 'forced' to implementing legal status for the State 0f Palestine.
the jewish settlements which have continuously spread on Occupied Palestinian territories have so become part Israel, the displaced jews will create a new problem.
Definitely, the chances of Obama coming to a favorable agreement with Neytenyahu are pretty good, 'specially since everyone wants to see an end to this 60 year old conflict but what about the settlers who have lived there for over 40 years.
Discarding them is out of the question, eviction will create an international uproar, which leaves relocation as the only option.
This option is going to be one mammoth task if not almost impossible which is why I reckon this problem should be addressed FIRST...
The reason why I say this is because once a mandate for a State of Palestine is put in place it will be harder to control Hamas and the Arab leaders who will eventually have to handle what could turn out to be a highly volatile situation. |

| I agree pae, the stopping of building, expanding whatever the israelis want to call it, of the settlements is absolutly neccessary. Also the destruction of arab israeli homes in jerusalem. Clinton's said it, and the arabs need action, im sure. I too cant see the settlers going without a fight. Maybe Samantha Powers wish will come true. |

| Hi guys and welcome to the new thread.....the sticking point I see is that of the refugee problem. Israel apparently does not want to allow Palestinians to return to Israel based on the fear it will overturn the current Jewish majority. It would seem Israel accepts everything else about the Arab Peace Plan so yes it is looking good. |

| Robaman......I treat Steve like you.....he has a very slim and non factual grasp on the legalities or truths of the problem. Even you fail to grasp that a Palestinian State will become a reality. You have not yet answered the questions I put to you. You prefer to avoid truth and your non- response to those questions is proof. All you ever produce is a wide variety of racist slurs and false accusations which are still able to be viewed on the old Hamas thread....no doubt you will continue the same approach here. That is your right and I am not opposed to you appearing here. Your response only serves to undermine your own credibility...not ours. |

| Yes Paerina...been there seen it and spiked it. This is a thread where if we stick to historic fact, International Law and political statements made by those involved we cannot go wrong. We gained a lot of experience on the other thread and now know what to expect so we just need to keep our side of the fence honest. We are a good team. |

okay I've just finished perusing the Otago Daily and I couldn't find the c/p editorial Robbie Posted on the Israel thread.
What I did find however, was an editorial on the 60th (last years) celebrations of the State of Israel and criticsm of the NZ govt's role (or lack of) in it's celebrations. |

But for New Zealand Jews and supporters of Israel, there is a cloud over the celebration.
They have a strong feeling that the present New Zealand Government is using a stated official policy of "even handedness" to turn away from former friendly relations with Israel.
It was hugely disappointing in May 2003 to see then foreign minister Phil Goff holding hands with then Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, when Arafat had scuppered the Camp David peace talks and instigated the violence of the second intifada.

There's also an excellent coverage of the NZ protest against Israeli attrocities January this year.
Wonder if Robbie read that...
Very specific re: the genocidal actions of the IDF.
The woodworms are in total denial. |

| Paerina...what you need to remember here is at the very last Camp David meeting Arafat made all the concession more than at any other time and was not asking for anywhere near what was asked for previously and Israel walked out. Israel made no concessions and refused to engage at all. |

At the start of the talks, all the signs were that many of the most difficult issues in the decades-long Middle East conflict were ripe for solution, with the return of Palestinian refugees, borders and the future of Jewish settlements all on the table.
But the status of Jerusalem has remained the biggest sticking point. Israel illegally annexed the eastern half of Jerusalem from Jordan in 1967, and Palestinians want it back. Israel says the city's sovereignty is not up for negotiation. |

| If I recall Paerina Barak walked out because Arafat would not back off on the return of East Jerusalem yet made large concessions on settlements on the Westbank and other issues. I will keep hunting and see if I can find the article I found on the other thread. |

absolutely...
What isn't quite appreciated in the Arafat/Sharon negotiations I notice is the Arab leader's focus was on the bigger picture.
I think history will always be wondering WHY Arafat turned down the most generous concessions ever offered to a Palestinian by Israel and even Bush blames Arafat... to this day.
Thing is the offer did not include an autonomous State of Palestine..
The ultimate dream of every Palestinian. |
