LAthoug I think it should be considered given how far along the technology has advanced storage is still an issue. Put asdie quantityies the fat is radioactive waste is real and will acumulate over time so for mine not a long term solution if generatiosn on they peopele will be left with the problem.

I think that science need to seriosuly look at alternate power and the go-slow for me really ios that power brokers will not go near it as it may well result in a shift of control but thne what is there left if the pla nte is deplete to the extent that every life cycel on earth is broken and on the verge of disrepair.

I apologise if this seems a little flighty but it's reflection on soltuions for now but hopefully one with little reverberation/consequence to our children and our children's children... now IU think I'll go hug a tree and mkae a happy time with some chick with hairy armpits

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
Nuclear power has great potential, just one full-capacity power station will power ten Christchurch's. However, uranium, plutonium and other radioactive elements are very dangerous, and minute amounts of the stuff will cause cancer, abnormalities and death.

Also, being an geologically unstable country, going nuclear may be harmful if a significant earthquake occurs near the facility. If it can't tolerate high earthquake thresholds, then New Zealand's future is in doubt. It these factors are acknowledged and waste management is of a high standar, then nuclear power all the way.

Will nuclear power help growth. Less cost and more omff.
Are we afraid of change. There again people yet make EMOTIONAL decsions with no facts. (In my case I aren't making a decsion but just finding out more)I( want to know more to make a fair call. No one tells us anything. If we judge govt descions on other policies I have to question this. Cheers

The good people of Chernobyl were assured their power station was safe and no harm could possibly come to them.
Any doubters were ridiculed and told they were dinosaurs.
The rest is history, and we all know that history has a funny old habit of repeating itself!

Last year a 60 minutes film crew went to Australia to document on a natural resource found only there and no where else in the world at this point in time yet.To have the potential to breakdown and render radioactive waste completely harmless.I guess this may solve the radioactive waste issue i suppose.Does anyone remember catching that docu towards the end of last year.

I covered this on the 'manufacturing' thread and oh boy .....
In perfect world where renewable resources are infinite; the snows keep melting and filling the rivers for hydro, where the wind keeps blowing to keep the thousands upon thousands of wind turbine spinning, where the thermal areas keep gushing forth with it's steam; NO. But contrary to what some may say we do not live in that perfect world ........................

Superman fears kryponite and flies far away very fast.
Helengrad fears uranium and escapes in speeding motorcade.

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
Xtr... Don't blame our beloved (joke) PM for the lack of interest in nuclear power. The fear of it is in the psyche of this country. Bollard learnt it after he lost an election in a large part due to the nuclear bogey fear.

I think you can blame the French for the start of the entrenchment of that fear. Unfortunately just after the Cold War where everyone was nervous of a nuclear war the French decide to do atmospheric nuclear tests in our backyard. Remember our PM going over on a warship in a stern protest. Everyone was right behind him as it was one of those moments we could be proud of being a Kiwi. Unfortunately it cemented an even greater fear of the nuclear bogey as more people gained awareness of the issue. Lange feeling the mood of the nation bans nuclear warships and cements that home with that great one liner in the debate.

So here we are today totally anti anything nuclear and I do not see us overcoming that fear to even explore the possibility of nuclear energy in the foreseeable future.

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
On a more serious note you are correct in what you say. There were a lot of factors to fear the 'nuke' scenario; even up until the end of the Cold War. It's a shame that today this fear still encompasses everything to do with uranium.

Absolutely, the fear means people instilled with it will never be able to distinguish the difference between neuclaer weapon technology and nuclear power technology.

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
I think the whole scenario would be different today if it hadn't of been for the French 'invasion' of the Pacific. The U.S. and Britain had come and gone with their testing and our attitudes were pretty nuetral. But bloody minded arrogance from an entity that only held a minor interest [French Polynesia] in our neighbourhood changed the way we all thought, and think today Been great reading your comments ......

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
Jake. Let us just chat.

1.Firstly engineering has changed

2.Detail in an answer is better than well (this is the way it was statements.

3. I am not saying lets do it, but come up with a solution

4. We have to investigate and study any situation before a decsion. Failure to to this is a guess or a gutt feeling. This is not good enough today never less yester year.

We jump so quick at what we are used to however we never give old ideas a chance. We must always keep and open mind together with a careful decsion.

IN 1946 the Ameriacns sent a piece of wire to the Japaneese 1000th of an inch thick....(gloating)
The Japaneese sent it back with a hole up the middle.

Cheers
