ophiuchus14; Yes there is tidal power to go with the geothermal, solar, wind, hydro, gas, coal etc.etc. But where do you put all of this ? Do you have it spread all over diferent parts of our small country and have an endless skyline of huge pylons or break the bank and bury thousands of k's of cable underground ? There's even thought on putting wind turbines offshore to save the blot on the landscape so already there's a concern about this aspect of this type of generation. An ideal situation is to have a smaller number of big power generators, not a lot pof small ones. And not so few as to have put all the egss in one basket so to speak. Hang in there kid, you're comments always welcome; even from old old geezer like me.

Ophiuchus is on to something with tidal power. I use to do a bit of diving and boy when your under water in a harbour, estuary etc and the tide starts to move you know about it.
Technology needs to catch up though as for years we have relied too heavily on cheap oil from the Arabs to fire thermal stations to cover energy generation shortfalls and did not spend any money on alternative energy generation concepts. |

Noozie time for a conspiracy theory. You probably know Helium only naturally occurs on a star. Helios meaning sun is where the word Helium comes from. However the Americans found a way to make Helium and have never shared the secret with anyone. I think they have already cracked the fusion problem years ago and do not want the rest of the world to be running on a cheap, clean fuel making it difficult for them to control things.

Nooz, just looked tokamak up. Phark Princeton actually produced a fusion reaction in the lab back in 1994. What the hell are we still debating about nuclear power when we seem to be so far down the road to viable fusion energy production technology.

Dan, I did read somewhere that the reason that the Hindenburg Zeppelin was filled with hydrogen instead of helium was because the yanks wouldn't supply the krauts with helium at the time, then boom whhoooommmfffaaa went the Hindenburg. I hadn't realised that they were still the only ones who manufacture it. If they can do fusion, it must rate as the best kept secret since secret record keeping began.

Yeah, Fusion is real exciting. It has the potential to surpass perpetual motion which is just upside down and probably the thing that is making it so elusive. I believe that when they figure it out, mankind will go beyond the stars in the blink of an eye.

powley9; you call me an idiot when your the retard that said we should use LESS solar, wind and tide power generation and that our population was getting smaller. Go bact to 11.38 yesterday and read it for yourself. And you don't have to believe me that nuclear generation is now safe; just takes a little more reading if you're capable. Get out of your cot.

powley9; If you go back and read my postings [heaven forbid that you are capable of doing this] you will note that I based my 8 million on an open door immigration policy. I also said that if this was not so then the population would reach 5 million by 2050. I am still trying to figure out your 'loosing people'. What's loosing. Must have something to do with your reduction in power generation. Want to keep up the name calling like the dope you are ? Because I'll just keep reminding you about your own idiotic confusing postings......

I seriously think you need help. Why don't you stand behind what you post. Way back the discussion went off nuclear power generation and into the interesting fusion topic. It's obvious that this went way over your head because you had to resort back to some idiocy you posted earlier. And for all your garbage you still haven't managed to get into a meaningful discussion about our future power needs.

How come I've just heard on the news that 'one' of the reasons for possible shortages this year has come about bacause of less wind in some turbine areas. But then again you did say use LESS yesterday didn't you so it doesn't matter.

Putting tidal power generaters in Cook Strait has just received approval - work may start this coming summer. Tidal power seems ideal to me as the turbines will be deep under water and noone will see them.
Cook Strait could produce 12 gigawatts of power qhich is 1 - 1.5 times what our energy generation capacity is now.
This will cost billions of dollars so private investment as well as service providers will be able to invest in the project. |

Yes xtr. It would be a great power source as tidal currents never stop. Probably 10 years before it would operate at capactiy though. Still will be interesting to see how the first turbines go in the next couple of years.

dhume, this tidal power proposal is an experiment to see what the costs and practicalities are like. It can hardly be called a solution to the current supply shortages we face. Water exerts phenomenal force and anchoring anything in its' path, like a water turbine is not easy.

Of course it is but these turbines already have rave reviews overseas. We will see. Much better than nuclear power if it works though - those power plants really are ugly!

Global warming/climate change is playing havoc with hydro power. Fusion, Tidal Power generation e.t.c. are future prospects and not viable alternatives at present. One Nuclear plant as back up to hydro could see the country through the next 50 years. What else is as reliable?
