I guess that when oil runs out, the arabs will have to go back to selling dates i n the bazaar. Global warming will stop, except for coal. NZ will be on nuclear or fusion power. What else is likely anyway ??

Chenobyll was an archaic prehistoric powerstation that was inevitably going to fail ....also it was more than 20years ago!....with all the hysteria over global warming and CO2 emissions a small nuclear power station is the perfect answer. Did you know that France has the cleanest air in Europe!....and guess what ...the vast majority of their electricity is nuclear powered. You can not have it both ways....either have safe dirty coal or clean nuclear giving off little more than steam. As for the waste....encase it in glass and concrete and send it to the bottom of the sea. simple

We have history of inventive science in this country.. Who can provide method of reducing danger of left over product from Nuclear, and then allow it to be used for power generation internationally?? Until then we have to be very careful!!

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
as I said on another post, the Maui Gas Field is almost empty. We could grind the waste and pump it several thousand metres into the old field. Could probably do the same for others and make money out of it.

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
Of course we should adopt it, how many time do we hear "oh the lakes are low", cut back on power otherwise we will be having blackouts...do we live in the dark ages here, many overseas countries see us as 20yrs behind the rest of the world its time to get with it, and give up the pathetic notion that we wont adopt nuclear energy, a nuclear power station should also reduce power price, as its laughable what the current power companies charge, i would love to see an overseas enterprise be given the opportunity to come here and build one to compete with current energy companies, then they would know what competition is, bring it on i say, we need to adapt get stay current with the rest of the world...

A country with only 4 million people that has hydro lakes and the potential for creating power by alternative means should not even be contemplating nuclear....ridiculous!

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
The problem is with that with all the alternatives available you will get some greenie moron protesting because of some sort of "pollution". The same sort of "mentality" that came up with the idea that a couple of years ago that a HUGE saving could be made if everyone on The West Coast(approx. 15000 homes) converted to wood burning stoves for their heating and hot water. When it was put to them that Coasters aren't allowed to cut down trees they replied that wood could be brought in from Christchurch. When asked how, reply was "by truck". What of the carbon footprint was the response, oh, don't worry about that, you'd be saving for the country on power. And people out their follow these idiots !!!!!!!!!! Bring on a nuclear station, we'll need one in future just to keep up with the population growth. Where do we put it? On the central plateau, sod all people live there anyway. Then build a HUGE prison next to it and if any of the scum-bags escape it'll be easy to track them down as they'll glow in the dark.

as I said on another thread, I was in France last year and saw smallish Nuclear Power Stations from the train. There were cattle and crops right up to the fences and farmers working nearby. There was only steam coming out. Come on guys itg is high time we put our predjudices away and gave the thing a proper study!!

Must remember science is always 30 years ahead of its' consequences - just enough time to die and leave the problems for the next generations. We do our best to be green - then a plastics factory goes up in flames in China through lack of fire protection measures. The fact is we are all living under the shadow of Chernobyl and its' cousins. The static background radiation level of our atmosphere is already twice what it was before the Bomb.Nuclear Power is not an option for planet Earth , let alone little Godzone, the only option is to cut our power usage.... one way or another. Remember , electricity is as much a priveledge as personal transport. Not a birthright. We keep learning about the consequences of the actions of generations past, but we still govern to the same old money-god system

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
..time to get real people - we do not have the infrastructure or population to support nuclear power in this country.. What we do have though, is a massive coal reserves on the West Coast (where I live) and we are currently mining furiously to supply the Chinese to use in their power stations.. sort of ironic don't you think

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
First of all learn how to write in English. There are many alternatives to nuclear power unfortunately the ones who control this planet won't let the people of this planet use them. As for your derogatory remarks concerning women with hairy armpits, you are sadly a brainwashed, man (for want of a better word in your case), imagine if women insisted that men shaved under their armpits. Before you hug any tree ask its permission first, its not as brain dead a living being as you are.

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
why not harvest the power from the tides
the tide will come in and go out untill the end of time
there must be a lot of good places that could be used to put turbines to harness the tidal flow

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
Tidal power sounds pretty good in a country with a high coast to area ratio. Just a thought; why don't we all think about using less power? I'm heading off grid and the mantra is that it is easier and cheaper to save it than to make it. Guess that makes me a dinosaur, but I reckon people like me won't become extinct when the infratructure fails.

If we were allowed to build eco friendly homes (straw bale houses eg) we could probably dramatically reduce our power use.

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
Sure helps to be in that position, however even ordinary materials can save us heaps with good commonsense design. My view is that whenever anything is reticulated (fuel, water, electricity) people become wasteful and only think about the cost in $$$ terms. We need to all look at being a bit more responsible day to day to reduce the demand and, as you say, be encouraged to look at eco-friendly choices.

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
You know it's really funny but I remember talking to someone years ago in 1994 when Auckland ended up with the generators being installed to 'run the city'. The thought was how could a city entirely surrounded by the worlds most available and renewable resource run out of power - yes the water! We discussed the ideas back then of Plastic turbines and wondered why there wasn't something created like this - now in 2008 apparently they are actually doing this in the Cook Strait or something similar - how come in 14 years (longer actually) has it taken our governments and changes of governments to get around to this. Is it because the US and UK are the 'leaders' of innovation and we should step in line? Did it take til the US and UK went down on the pedestal before our government could step out of line and actually think for itself - and if Nat gets in does that mean that the money they would need to borrow for tax cuts would increase to nuclear - do you really want a melt down in NZ - it would affect at least half of one of our islands if it happened - not to mention the effects of leaching into the soil etc for years - they are still cleaning up after chernobyl and the dozens in the states. Like their planes no longer in use, their old phones, their out of date computers etc - sorry but we are still a bit behind, would we get the old parts for a nuclear power plant as well? Winds free, heaps of it now days too. We can even create it if we have to. Be great if it could be harnessed to a car. - Woops we'd have to pay a tax on it tho!!:-)

Re:Will NZ become nuclear powered? Reply to this message
I know I'm a bit late here but I was all for Nuke power stations, that was until I did a quick study, We rely upon under ground water supplies, and we live in an earth quake zone, with the teutonic plates moving all the time, here's my question, what if we had an accident and the radio active material got into the underground water supply? then we would be in so much poo, I don't even want to think of the cost's to the people and the economy if this ever happened.
