new zealand a police state? Reply to this message
Born in NZ and hence NZ passport holder, I returned to New Zealand after a few years absence and noticed a few things, such as being quizzed upon arrival at Auckland airport about precise address of my hosts, observing a harmless guy who had nodded off at a food plaza being frog-marched to a police car. Is New Zealand now a police state?

markiwinz, I don't know how long you have been out of the country or when the last time you flew was, but everything has changed at airports since 911, more questions are asked, more bags are searched, more cameras are setup so that customs can study individuals, it is global not just NZ.

I've recently returned from overseas and found the added 'security' at the airport acceptable. Police State ????; this will never happen in NZ because they will never get enough money to be that powerful. Look at funding and manpower today; it's a joke and reliant on the Minister of Police's demand for traffic ticket quotas. The recent 'jack boot' raids must also tell us that they wouldn't be capable of getting it right anyway.

I see. New Zealand should take the precautions relevant to terrorist attacks on the USA? Well they do fly in and out of NZ. Anyway on my way back to Auckland on said trip I went through Hong Kong Airport-just voted world's best airport. They cleared my carry-on and no questions asked, but when I went through Auckland customs they got me to unpack everything because they were unable to recognise my camera brace-for supporting a telephoto lense-for its harmless self.

More the same of what I experienced of my former home country. I'm assuming you are not a NZ govt employee as plently of those nowadays.

Cheers
Mark

Comrade putionz, have you managed to extract any other information from the dissenter? Our comrades in Helengrad must be informed at once.

We know that he flew in from Hong Kong. "camera brace-for supporting a telephoto lense" hmmmmmm

Good work on trying to ascertain his departure time comrade, I am searching through our database as we speak for markwinz and anything of the like.

We know you are out there Mark, time is not on your side.

I'm pretty happy about the grilling at gateways to this country. I can accept that it is necessary. I just hope it is working.

As for the Police State....well maybe.
After all, it seems to be the police rather than the courts who decide if a prosecution will take place.

In my humble opinion, if you break the law, the enforcers will pick you up for it...and the courts will decide your guilt or othewise...not the police. To that extent, yes, I suppose we do have a police state.

Haha It's so funny reading how you oldies think about our lil NZ, being a first generation kiwi I think it's good to have the airports covered like they do as long as they remember the REAL terrorists arent the TUHOE people hehe

As for our Country being a "POLICE STATE", in some ways I think yes too, I mean, we are ALWAYS guilty until proven innocent, we never see politicians in our hood unless it's an election year not forgetting the Pig escorts they come with, that guy that got shot down the line by a cop who was scared of a golf club not long ago, that other guy that came on Tele at that fight event where he was laying on the ground handcuffed whilst getting peppersprayed lol man! he was white too lmfao and in a suit lol!!!

I'm not comparing us to any other countries but why is we're only one when it comes to our national sports? This debate should be focussed on the poverty that affects 4.4% of our 8-14 year olds, or should we wait till their tomorrows criminals? Hell of a way to create a "POLICE STATE" lol

He who rules the streets has the high ground. Right now it's the taggers, teen gangs, boy racers, Mongrel Mob and Black Power. Police State ?? May be if another 6000 front liners were recruited.

If that WERE true, then I wish "New Zealand's Biggest Gang" would obliterate it's enemies and competition.

....They probably would if they could....but don't forget, the very people they would be taking out would be Labour voters and their families.

The social re-engineering agenda sets out to support as large a number of dependants as possible.

Who wouldn't vote for 'Continued Handouts' if they were on the recieving end of them?

deydey07. Police outnumber the taggers etc.etc.etc ? Sure but they only work 9-5. Why do you think there's so much tagging ans cr.p going on at night. You should go for night walks and see who comes up to you to say 'hullo'. And yes I am serious.

Re:new zealand a police state? Reply to this message
I guess all this media hype/scare mongering has gotten you so afraid that you dont want to walk around at night huh?? But then again I guess it all depends on where you live, I walk around at night all the time, i'm not afraid to and will continue to do so. I imagine it would be quite a boring life to be living in constant fear.
As for police working 9-5, I guess you could say taggers operate 11-6, night shift operators, there could be a solution more police at night?? but in order to do that I guess you have to get more patched up cops.
Maybe if people actually try to talk to taggers, gang members etc then things maybe a little different, but people are to scared and would rather take the word of other people (media etc..) than findout for themselves.
One stat worth finding out is the killing and rape stats of the police vs gangs, it may suprise a few people.
