The Wall Reply to this message
It came down 20 years ago tomorrow. How do people think Germany is getting on 20 years later?

Re:The Wall Reply to this message
Very interesting documentary screened on sky a while ago.Google "cowboys and communists"to obtain info.Compares life in present day Berlin with the way it was under communism.
Older people expressed that they were happier with the old way, there was no unemployment. They had money but little to spend it on.Now the reverse applies.
People seem to have enjoyed a closer knit social and family life without the distractions of the "free" world.
Well worth viewing if you get the chance.

Re:The Wall Reply to this message
Apparently Maggie (Thatcher) didn't want the wall to come down and told Francois (Mitterrand) and Ronnie (Reagan) so. She also thought that Helmut (Kohl) was getting too big for his own boots.

Re:The Wall Reply to this message
Not quite accurate kiwi - thatcher thought a reunified germany could pose a threat to stability in europe is all...it was not thus her belief the wall should stay, rather all countries should be mindful that kohl's ambitions in europe would grow once unified...

Re:The Wall Reply to this message
East Germany was a socialist prison, that most aspired to get out of. The Soviets even admitted that the east germans were paying the for the ills of there fathers (it would appear , appart from events, they would have continued to pay). It is therefore testiment to what the human being can become accustomed to when no alternative is offered. This was just agiant prison for them, they couldn't even travel to other eastern block countries without the states permission.
