Good 200 for Ryder, but you can see how disappointed he was not to go on to 300. Ryders the man averaging over 64 with the bat.

Re:ryder a breath of fresh air Reply to this message
If we were looking for experience we should have kept Oram he was pretty good on the last ODI at both batting and bowling. Taylor might be experienced but the Indian batsman are out of form and yet they are making the black caps batters look so bad. Cant help but wish Fleming was still playing I still think he was the best batsman black caps had. =(

Yep agree with the last two posts. Taylor is the most experienced batsman in the top 5.

richardcates26 yes I couldn`t agree more,Taylor needs a couple of good shots and he will get form back,he has proven how good he can be in the past as against the Aussies. We have very limited amount of good batsmen around the country, the cupboard is bare.

Re:ryder a breath of fresh air Reply to this message
Can't drop Taylor! Mills should have a break, and Southee should be given the chance. Dropping Taylor, our best batsmen, would be like Aussie dropping an out of form Ponting or India Tendulkar. You don't drop your best players because often they're only a boundary away from getting there confidence back, and it's confidence that lacks with class players not ability. Who would we put in his place also?

I know what your saying but test cricket is a different ball game compared to ODIs. Plus the Indian test team has players like Rahul Dravid, V.V.S. Laxman and Tendulkar who can all win tests on their own

Re:ryder a breath of fresh air Reply to this message
I think the black caps have shown on the last ODI that they can actually dismiss them for a low total, but maybe replacing a few players whom seemed to be useless, ie Taylor and Mills might help, such poor running from a world class batsman and such poor figures for a world class bowler.

IMO Taylor needs to go back to state championship aswell he is soo out of form at the mo. I dont think Guptill is an opener also he should come in at no 3.

Re:ryder a breath of fresh air Reply to this message
True Grant Elliot's Much better with the bat than James Franklin. Makes our tail wag a little more. Southee's New Zealands future seam bowler, and needs as much experience
as possible. Ross Taylor couldn't bat time, leaves him searching for test form

Re:ryder a breath of fresh air Reply to this message
I think dropping Mills is a good idea, but i'd bring Southee in for him. Drop Franklin and bring in Elliot in his place, I think thats a better balanced side? Moles is 3 a piece against the best 20/20 and odi squad going around, and potentially of the modern era. He's doing some good work with our squad, and if they keep improving then he deserves a good crack. Would be nice to have a coach of recognition though.....

Re:ryder a breath of fresh air Reply to this message
For some reason Wright turned down the coaching - I suspect because the selectors want final say in team make-up. So once again we lose a top coach, as we did Turner a few years back.

As for commentators, we get Trist??? Give me a break.

I'll take Crowe, Coney, Smith and such anytime - at least they have the knowledge - we tyr to copy Oz in other areas so why not the calibre of TV & radio commentators?

(Drop Mills for Elliot) I like it.
Kyle Mills is obviously out of form and Grant Elliot can do no wrong.

Re:ryder a breath of fresh air Reply to this message
Sports mad - absolutely correct.
Elliott has the sand to perform and has shown it.
I'd drop Mills permanently.

Unreal to think they questioned dropping Martin?

Sooner we get a proper coach too the better - we go from Bracewell to some Journeyman ex County player with NO international experience - we are the only country without an ex Test player as coach.

Drop Kyle Mills for Grant Elliot maybe

The out of form Mills can go away and work on his game.

In 14-ODIs 29-year old Grant Elliot averages 82.75 with the bat and has taken 11wickets. Also who can forget his well made 115 against the Aussies. With a strike run rate of 78.62

Re:ryder a breath of fresh air Reply to this message
m-family...I also added that we have had players like Astle & Greatbatch, also hand/eye guys who thrived - countered by players like McMillan and Sinclair who struggled.

He has been in Test and ODI for 5 minutes.

Look at McCullum - great to watch when blasting and on fire - all too rare in reality which explains his average of 28.

Ryder is without question a talented player, actually reminds me of Richard Reid from the late 80's. My hesitation was and is, that he may well have to adjust his style to survive long term if he wishes consistency - hand/eye tend to be found out as world bowlers 'work' out their strengths (quick example? Oram - top all-rounder until if dawned on bowlers he cannot handle short of a length, so for two seasons now Oram cannot buy a run).

I'll be the first to applause if Ryder becomes one the good ones - we need all we can get.

<I said his technique that relies on eye not footwork may well count against him for consistency >

That technique hasnt hindered Sewag

Re:ryder a breath of fresh air Reply to this message
Insider...being a realist is not being negative.

We can all live with blinkers and hope against hope our teams can perform...but reality bites - NZ cricket has never, never, attained the levels fans aspire them to achieve - they turn up year after year with a dedication one applauds, but hopefully ringed by the knowledge we are not a cricketing nation.

At times we punch above our weight - ie, during the Howarth era and the 92 World Cup - plus we produce a Hadlee and a Crowe now and then.

My comments come from a passionate cricket supporter, but also one who accepts our limited pool and sadly, our inate ability to be 60-6 in a test.

Do we achieve on occasions, of course we do.

And who knows, this may turn out to be one of those?

Also Ryder has consistency on his side, and that's something Sinclair never had.
