Yeah it was cool to see the little master score another ton.
Ponting notched up a big century as well, in the 5th ODI against the poms.

Still the Worlds 2 best batsmen I reckon. Australia & India
will take a lot of stopping in the ICC Champions Trophy.

It'll be interesting to see how well the South Africans go,
with the huge home advantage & all.

Somebody should be dropped
to make way for Grant Elliott in all forms of the game

Not sure who should be dropped
when several are playing below par - Take ya pick I guess

Re:tri series - ODIs Reply to this message
nz exchange - how long as McCullum been in this opening position for? I would say he's had a while to settle in, and it should be time to see some tangible results. If he is supposedly the "rock" at the top of the order then why has he not produced the tons that one expects for someone that should be batting through the innings? I'm not saying he's not a talented player, but perhaps we need to review the batting line up, and maybe he needs to go back to being the great finisher that he used to be?

Re:tri series - ODIs Reply to this message
I dont know how much of the game you watched last nyt msingh....but the wicket was slow and low, so therefore spin was pretty much out of the question. However, McCullum did get atleast one ball to bite, but on slow low wickets spinners can be effective with the speed variations.

What I want to know is, why does Vettori not explore other bowling options?? The wicket was perfect for Ryder and Elliot both to have a trundle on. Vettori needs to grow some balls and start playing outside the box. Somedays it will pay off, others he wont be so lucky. But you have to make your own luck.

Which brings us back to the great Brendon McCullum debate. We love to see him batting number 1 and tonking it all over the place....but as soon as he starts to have a lean patch then we all criticise his position. He is a talented batter and since Ryder has come along, McCullum is changing his role to the opener that will be the rock whilst Ryder provides the fire works. This is obviously not McCullum's natural game, and it will take some time for him to get used to.

And then on top of that, we get a rubbish home summer which aparently has more games then any other season in the past. Why are they getting excited over it?? 3 test v Pakistan, 1 test v Bangladesh and 2 test v Australia.... wow

Re:tri series - ODIs Reply to this message
insider and msingh - you are both right. I think the last scorers of ODI 100's have been Guptill, Ryder and Elliot (Taylor might be in there as well but I can't be sure). If you are batting in the top three you should expect 50's and 100's and set the platform. McCullum, for all his talent, appears to go hard out for the first 15 overs and then seems to lose his way a bit. Oram - I keep thinking he has to come right at some time, but how long do you keep waiting?

Re:tri series - ODIs Reply to this message
Vettori & Co don't give Grant Eliott many opportunities
but when he gets them he makes them count. This is a guy who has scored a 100 against the Aussies in the Chappell hadlee series. But yet they choose Oram over him every time. Oram only has the one ODI hundred from 131 games

Re:tri series - ODIs Reply to this message
yea when nz won the chappel hadlee they were ranked 3rd in odis...and mcullum batted down the order...ever since then, mcullum has opened.... and nz have just kept persisting with him despite him never showing any form...guptill and ryder need to open with taylor at 3..i cant even think of a good batsmen to bat at 4 besides vettori.

Re:tri series - ODIs Reply to this message
Yep McCullum should open in twenty20s but slide down the order in the 50 over version. I think twenty20 cricket has sped up the ODIs. Just how the 50 over game sped up the run rate in test cricket.
ODIs are more intense now

Re:tri series - ODIs Reply to this message
Is it time to push McCullum back down the order? Guptill and Ryder to open? I'm not blaming McCullum for the collapse, but perhaps we should revisit the basics of rotating the strike and putting away the bad ball instead of going hell for leather while the field is up. Sure its spectacular when it comes off, but I'm struggling to remember a recent ODI when we've been 100-0 off 13 overs.
