Mac has got to be the most intimidating batsman in the world, so destructive and will only get better which is even scarier but in my opinion far to premature to call him the best, his limited record to date does not justify it. The test arena is the ultimate benchmark that cricketers gauge themselves on. When he can do it in crunch games against quality opponents by the end of his career then compare the stats but I will definitely state that he is the most intimidating batsman around almost Viv Richards. As a bowler, you have to hope you get him out with minimal damage done to your bowling stats early, You can see that opposing teams breathe a sigh of releif when he's gone.

He's not the finished product yet - playing in tests and scoring heavily is where most players would like to be judged (you ask them!) In the England test series McCullum averaged around 30, but some of his shotmaking was average. He had the psychological edge on the bowlers but gave it away. He still needs to show his best in the test match arena for me. That's where Gilchrist was great - he absolutely demoralised teams coming in at 7 and adding another 100 odd runs. That's why McCullum needs to do in the upcoming series in England.

I agree not in the same class yet as a Tendulker or a Hayden, Ponting, Kallis e.t.c, but he is the most Destructive Player in world Cricket at the moment possibly along with Gilchrest and Afridi. He is a class act though in my opinion he looks like he has so much time at the crease to play his shots, and I dont think its a overly stupid comment to see he is in the Top 10 Batsmen in ODI cricket at this moment, and lets not forget that Auckland team did have Mills and and Martin in there Bowling LineUp...

Re:Brendon McCullum - "Best in the World ... Reply to this message
your right that mccullum isn't a batsmen that scores hundreds in one-dayers. But when your talking about one-dayers, it isn't necessarily about the amount of runs scored, but how quickly you score them. Anything thats scored above 70runs off only 50 balls is a bonus as it's a team game and there's only statistically 300balls bowled in an innings!!! Mccullum doesn't need to score hundereds, he just needs to keep doing what he is currently doing and take the pressure of batsmen like HOW and fulton, who can score large totals!

He's scored 80 against the S Africans 96 against the aussies 80 against the bangers 80 against the poms in very quick succession. Pretty good in my reckoning. You can have your thread gaylor5 I can see you are one grand know-it-all without a clue. Read a book sometime.

taylor5 you write about him not scoring centuries. Maybe it was coz he was at number 7 or 8? What's wrong with putting one of our own on a pedestal the only people who can pull him down are ill-informed people like you.

gvstkwi. He did score runs against South Africa and Australia. 80 and 96 just last year at a very good strike rate. Short memory you have.

Re:Brendon McCullum - "Best in the World ... Reply to this message
first of all look at the opposition,Bangladesh,Eng land...i dnt think Mc cullum would have that sort of strike rate against India, parkistan,Aussie,St h Africa, our problem is we build up our players just setting them up for a big fall.Until i see results against the big four,

Re:Brendon McCullum - "Best in the World ... Reply to this message
Yeah just on the rugby, who did Ian Smith play for by the way. Loved the Tui add about Smith not having had a hotdog yet "yeah Right" love it. McCullum would be close to the most damaging batsmen in the world at present but no where near the best. Did anyone see Sachin bring it home last night, that is pure class. That beamer he got from Lee didn't even rattle him. Lee is about the best Aussie around to so it would have been a fair binkim slip. Good to see that tosser Hayden lose, what an absolute clown.

Well said Taylor5, and I endorse your comments about the other Brendon, but if you realllly think he is bad on Radio and TV, then sometime tune into SKY and listen to the little boys there who still call each other Smithie and Drakie etc etc etc who commentate on the Rugby. Amazing how THEY all know so much more about that game being played, than the poor old Ref does, they are incredible to have to listen too.

Brendon McCullum - "Best in the World" Reply to this message
Firstly, I watched McCullum obliterate Auckland yesterday. He simply smashed 'em and it was wonderful to watch. Full value and superb entertainment!!!! Probably the best one day innings I've seen in a long, long time.

And then I had drive across town listening to another 'Brendan' on the radio suggesting that McCullum is now possibly the best ODI batsman in the world!!!!! Jeez! What gets into our sports commentators/presenters that they can come up with such an assumption.

GET REAL.....

To compare McCullum with the likes of Gilchrist, Hayden, Tendulkar and Ponting, is simply ridiculous. And I don't mean that as a slur on McCullum. In the international arena, the afore-mentioned have scored 94 ODI hundreds between them!!!! McCullum (to date) hasn't scored one..... no not even one! And here we have a respected sports presenter drawing this analogy.....

Which brings me to a point that I think epitomizes the inevitable disappointments we repeatedly suffer here in NZ. We get 'fed' so much hype from our press, we perceive our sportsmen to be invincible. The Cricket WC and Rugby WC were prime examples - where the disappointment bordered on disbelief. And to a large extent due to the repetitive bleating from an irresponsible and patriotic press contingent for months and weeks leading up to and during the tournaments.

So now McCullum goes forth with the expectations of a nation and the burden of cloaked invincibility into the international arena looking for his first ton in a 130-odd games!!! And if he fails we will all cry foul and it'll no doubt be someone else's fault. And we will all wake up again and switch on the radio once more.....

....and don't let me get started on the newspaper sports reporters.
