New Zealand got to nuture this impressive young fast bowler to a genuine all rounder with utmost care. He should not be over burden. He has immence talent and could be a great alrounder time to come.Do not ever follow the English system as their system do not develop long lasting fast bowlers.Everything at the moment with English is part timers.

Agreed Southee @ 145kmph and with the ability to swing the ball, with a great temperement will feature heavily for NZ in the future.... Dont know baout O'Brien though his pace is pedestrain not too mention he his 32, at best he is a back-up bowler as he has been in the past...

Very well put and subtle too! Wright is the man. Southee will need to be looked after or else he will be another Shane Bond. Only available when he is not injured!

I like what i see in this young guy. Not bad shakes with the bat on his day either. In the near future i see Southee and O'brien opening the attack - they're bot pretty quick - and Mils and Oram backing them up. It could become one of the most lethal attacks in world cricket, if coached wright. All we need now is some guys who can bat lol

Just think he is 19 years old and bowling at close to 145kph at his top end. Think when hes fully developed as well as a treat with his swing his pace will also sort out the worlds best

let's all remember tim is only 18 and clearly a talent, but lets not heap expectation on the guy at this stage and give him a chance to develop. Remember he will have failures along the way!!!!!!!!! we all do no matter what we take on in life

A talent that needs to be nurtured good to see NZ not be so risk adverse and blood him. The way he got his wickets belies a maturity beyond his years. His 77?? odd off something like 48 balls is a glimpse of raw potential to be harnessed. I just hope his body holds out man most of our pace bowlers are made of balsa wood and break down.

Tim Southee will be a NZ great unless his back screws up... he'll probably be up their with vettori and hadlee at the end of his career for wickets taken.
As for Grant Elliot, his average was 28 in domestic cricket... that is useless, i don't know why they selected him over Greg Hay and James Marshall who both averaged over 55 in both the one-day and first class competitions. |

There can be no doubt that Tim Southee is a very talented bowler, even at 19 years of age. He consisently dominated Under 19 cricket, especially at the World Cup. However, the talk of him becoming an all-rounder is ridiculous. He slogged his way to 77*, a pretty damn good knock, but let's face it, it was full of slogs. If the public, players and management can nurture Southeefor a few years then maybe he will become an international class bowler. Let's not get too excited though.

Southee could very well be our next Cairns or Nash. He's only 18 if he keeps improving in 5 years time he can very well be a great allrounder. He needs to play as many games as possible though - give him a good run Hadlee!

He's going to have one fantastic career if he isn't used and abused by the Hadlee/Bracewell dynasty. And who knows the two new guys on the block may make it tough for Ryder to get back. All three would be pretty awesome I reckon.
