| This was not an entirely bad year for sports. Just the ones that so many kiwis seem to deem important. Wellington now has a fully professional football team courtesy of Terry Serepisos, his entourage and the magnificent public who get behind the team. Auckland City were always on a hiding to nothing at the Club World Champs but never the less the did so much to raise the profile of the game in New Zealand. The All Whites have beaten both Vanuatu & Fiji in World Cup qualifying and also managed a 2-2 result against Wales in Wales. Soccer has in 2007 I think turned a corner and there are building blocks in place for its popularity to challenge that of rugby in the capital (Beckham will sell out, hahaha Auckland!!), Waitakere will win the Oceania Champions League to get to the Club World Champs and if we keep a fit squad we may very well have a team at the greatest tournaments on earth. The Confederations Cup and in what will be our equal greatest ever sporting achievement the FIFA World cup of 2010. 2007 is a great year for soccer. Soccer is far better than rugby. Peace out. |

Time for the "major" sports to step aside and make way for the real champs of NZ sport, the ones that never get the limelight but train just as hard, don't fly business class, don't have pychologists, five star hotels and fat wallets.
The likes of our rowers and softballers, they have more world championship medals than all our major sports have support staff!!!
Take the Black Sox for instance, world champions since 1996, SINCE 1996 and they haven't lost a series in that time, let alone their world title. Time for a few journos to get out of their comfort zone (moaning at our losses) and start looking at some of the positives in grassroots New Zealand. |

i think everyone is fogetting one significant world champion!
sure the allblacks, silver ferns, team newzealand etc lost their respective world champs but what about the herculean effort of valerie vili at the world athletics championships?
this underrated and underpublicised effort did know receive the accolades it deserved. she smashed the best in the world in shotput with a devasting throw on her final put to become only the second - and youngest female track and field world champions from N.Z - now that was the highlight of the sporting year! |
