| oh,i get it.we're still talking about the olympics.dont you think its about time we move on from there?if those people that pick tthe athletes keep picking her,then they know why they do it.i've forgotten all about the olympics because its passed us by.concentrate on future events instead of the past,thats what i say. |

There's more to it than just being the best. There is also the 100% determination to win and the total dismay if you don't. There is also that team spirit if you are with a team. Beatrice not only failed to give it her best and it was obvious she wasn't trying to. She failed to decry her performance and last but not least; turned her back on the team she was with and left the Games.
NZ does not need 'the best' if it means the worst attitude goes with it. Give me second best with a positive competitive and team spirit anytime. |

| regardless of how good or poorly Beatrice is doing,she is still the best discus thrower in NZ.if there is anyone better,then by all means demote her,or if any of you moaners can do any better,then take her place,because,thats all you do.sit and judge and do stuff all for the country. |

Beatrice supported Telethon on TV3, helped fundraise money for Kids Can and still you don't like her. Did you see her on Maori TV CODE a couple of weeks ago where she said that she doesn't get funding and has been working to support her sport. I asked her about the government support and like you wanted to have ago at someone who I thought was wasting our public money and she said that she hasn't receieved funding from the govenrment since 2006.
You don't like her but she is helping others |

| i agree 100% spongebob. theres more to performance than just results on the feild. beatrice fails as miserably off the feild as she does on it (and thats saying something!) i realise she may be a nice person, and maybe a shy personality, but her PR skills are appalling. i dont like her at all. |

Well, first sentence made no sense, didn't quite edit the way it was meant to!
Basically, I feel if she is doing nothing to promote the sport, there should be no funding, but it shouldn't all come down to performance, as it certainly doesn't in other sports from what I have seen! |

If NZ based selection on the promotion of sport and not Performance otherwuise we would have no Soccer or Hockey teams, Basketballers, a hand full of All Blacks, League would be out the window and very few being sent to each Olympics (in fact, even if the Olympics Squad were based on the likelyhood of a top 10 finish, how many would be selected?)
At the end of the day, if she can't promote the sport (regardless of performance) she shouldn't be there IMO. |

She is a has-been.
Like too many athletes we fund them for donut world travel and they hardly make the starting grids.
Even our Olympic team was 98% full of 'athletes' who were never going to even make it past the heats - why spend the money on them
As for Beatrice, she had one win and has dined out on that for a decade. |

| Having actually met Beatrice on more than one occasion I have found her to be very approachable, friendly and polite. Who ever you are_eat me you dont even have the guts to have your real name behind your words. Why be so nasty. It is likely there is a very good reason Beatrice wasnt able to make it to the meeting. Personal reasons she doesnt have to justify to you. If there was a better athlete in her discipline then that person would take her place in a NZ team. As for the negative publicity in Beijing the media want to create heroes and villains - the media painted a very one sided story. There were other athletes that went home early without the grief from the media so when you say bad publicity you mean a handful of individual journalists putting there spin on it to create some controversy. The money that even a current world champion would get from SPARC is barely enough to live on (28,000 after tax) not to mention what Beatrice would get on her current ranking. So its not about easy money. A top 15 world athlete would need to train 2-3 times a day 6 days a week to get even $15,000 a year. So have some respect for the girl - its not about milking it. |

We as a country sat and cheeered proudly when Beatrice won us gold at the Commonwealths giving her the name Quees Bea etc, now she has made a couple of mistakes we are out for her blood. Its true we Kiwis do have a Tall Poppy Syndrome.
I wonder how many on here have even won a school running race in their life yet now have the mana to attack a fallen hero.

I tend to agree.
Her attitude at Beijing last year was bizarre. Having failed in the discus, she then wanted to go home instead of staying on and supporting the other athletes.
She has under-performed at several events now. Whilst I would like to see her have another crack, she does need to lift her game - her attitude sends the wrong signals. |

| how did she get to the US then? is it sponsors? if its with her own money, then fair enough, she isnt answerable to me, or anyone, but i doubt she paid her own fares and accomodation. |

| if she underperforms as usual then thats still a whole heap better than not turning up at all! athletics nz dont know what happened! if i didnt show up for work and my boss didnt know where i was i would definitely get the sack! |

Yeah I probably would complain if she did turn up, because no doubt she'd under-perform (again).
Surely there are some other up-and-coming atheletes that the funding could be better spent on. |

c'mon guys if she did turn up you'd still complain. Not sure what the story is with funding etc as I know she has a wel paid job on TV but that asaid I was always of the opinion that TV comes after you've retired not whilst you are tryign to get somewhere in your chosen spoert as an elite athlete.

| Beatrice Faumuina has failed to show up for the Prefontaine athletics meeting in Oregon at the weekend. Athletics NZ doesn't know why she wasn't there. This is a disgrace, and considering she receives govt funding to travel and compete in these events, she needs to be made accountable, and possibly even funding withdrawn. All this after she had all that negative publicity at the Beijing Olympics too. She is past her best.. waaaaaaaay past her best, and I want the buck to stop NOW! Any thoughts, folks? |
