"The scrum is a waste of time, why should a team be able to get the ball back after losing it? the scrum is pointless in both codes really."

Spoken like someone who has never been in a scrum. Union scrums are incredibly confrontational unlike league scrums which are just a bit of a pat on the bum. And yes I've been in hundreds of both.

Re:Union or league? Reply to this message
The two are respectable sports in their own right! Rugby union involves rucks, mauls, and scrums which require a different skill-set where as league is smash and bash - leaving no room for weaknesses. The proof is Wendell Sailor, Mat Rogers, Sonny Bill Williams etc..They may have all been great at League, but average in Union. In the same way, no great union player is guranteed to do well in League - So respect the two codes for what they are rather than drawing comparisions..

Union for me but like league too, wish the NZRL would grow some balls and stand up to the Aussies and the British sometimes off the field though

Re:Union or league? Reply to this message
Union and League are the best 2 sports on the planet.
I found league easier than union but mind you i was on the wing. Im a fullback and 1st five in union.. so i was always under alot more pressure. In my opinion you get blind sided alot more in union and i try to stay out of the rucks as much as i can, it sucks being trampled on!!

Physically i reckon they're both the same and i find them both interesting to watch but union is more fun to play for me, its just more open.

Re:Union or league? Reply to this message
Not sure, played both codes as a forward over 30 years, played league nearly 20 years and still playing rugby now, on average get kicked in the head every game, also get 3 or 4 shiners a season. Physically the tackling is the same in both codes and running into the opposition is the same. They are obviously fitter in the top levels but not sure if they are stronger but at the end of the week i would play both codes if i could and i know people who do

LEAGUE!
union bores me so much these days. I havn't watched an exciting game in years. The scrum is a waste of time, why should a team be able to get the ball back after losing it? the scrum is pointless in both codes really. Also the ref's in union drive me nuts, seriously they blow that damn whistle every 10 seconds. Its just a much slower paced game than league. League to me is just so much more exciting.

Union over league anyday, rather go to my local club and watch an under 10's game of union than an NRL game.

Union for me, definitely. (Go the Crusaders. ;-) )
However, I do keep one eye on the NZ League sides if and when they're doing alright.

Re:Union or league? Reply to this message
I'd even go further about the NRL and say that trhis outfit only looks after its own teams. I can remember the Warriors losing points for the salary cap fiasco but none of the recent Oz teams have lost any; they were only fined. And right now there are only two teams competitive enough in the Int. RL scene and they are the Ozzies and the Poms.

Re:Union or league? Reply to this message
the difference is the IRB has to look after all nations - whereas the nrl looks after its own backyard which in turn degrades the international game as a whole.

league world cups are in a disarray - 8 years since the last one... only three competitive teams in the world - oz/nz/ great britain!!! and that is a total bore in itself

watching league trying to pull off a 7's tournament was painful to watch as players looked out of place.

union has come a long way...it has only been professional for 14 seasons and it has made giant strides hence why league players are looking at union as a way to get around the world

Re:Union or league? Reply to this message
I too have played both codes in NZ, Ozy and EUR and now a Union coach. I find the comments interesting but both codes have there place in sport and certain aspects have been adopted from each eg: league defensive patterns etc and visa versa. In the past players generally transfered from Union to league due to the contract offering but we are now observing a swing toward Union due to it turning professional. The real concern now is not what code is demanding our players, but where in the world they are going to. Europe is draining the southern hemisphere of its talented player pools due to the high paying contracts and with NZ and OZY clubs and franchises unable to compete. France is top of this list with the UK also swallowing our talent. This leaves a risk for the future of the game unless in Union the NZRFU open their international selection process to those players playing off shore, but I hardly see this happening quickly due to their inability to adjust to the global game and wanting to maintain control. As far as a spectator sport and professionalism, in my view, league especially in OZ has again toppled Union in most aspects of marketing the game to the masses because there is a large working class population. Here in lies the diffence between the draconian IRB form of administration compared to its league counterparts. Competitions like the Super14 have become a bore until the semis due to the PC IRB rule changes that have taken the hardness out of the game because the Northern hemisphere cant compete and sponsorship and TV rights is more important now more then ever. I had always found Union easier to play then league due to the physical demands league places on your body. As a center, league gave me the foundation tackling skills and attitude to counter any union player running with the ball from the front row to fullback and thats 1/2 the battle won. The more intense league training (in Ozy) also gives one the dicipline and prearation for each game.

Re:Union or league? Reply to this message
ive played both, ive played league, ive played rugby, and i think rugbys a much more team orientated sport whereas league has alot of individualism about it,where if crucial plays are called upon in league, you go to your playmakers or stars,in rugby the forwards can be the ones who get you across the line, ive always loved the comparisons that fans have made over the years involving leaugie and rah rah players, who had a better kicking game out of Carlos Spencer or Andrew Johns? Lesley Vainikolo Vs Jonah Lomu, how would Jerry Collins or Ma'a Nonu go in league? how would Willie Mason go in Rugby? many leaugies have transferred to union,Brad Thorn,Tuqiri,Ryan Cross,Berrick Barnes,Tyrone Smith, while over the years, many union players have crossed over to league Vaiaiaga Tuigamala,John Gallagher,John Timu,Halligan,Ridge,Schus ter, theres even comparisons made nowadays of how similar defensive patterns look in both codes! as to what code makes NZ world famous,League or Rugby?,Rugby of course!,The All Blacks, just a mention of the word 'ALL BLACK' anywhere in the world,it immediately connects you back to nz.

Re:Union or league? Reply to this message
anyone can fight in a cage but not many can play rugby or league.Rugby is more technical and with 30 players on the field, you need a few more rules.League is much more entertainig now especially with more emphasis on speed especially round the ruck area and more atheletisim

Union or league? Reply to this message
I'm a fan of both, both great to watch. I've been coaching a while now and I have to say I can't help but laugh when people claim there is as much strategy involved in league. I'm not saying there no skill, there is skill in both. but as a team there is much more in union. Its is a more well rounded game.
