yep it's a sport, just like pairs figure skating and synchronized swimming. They spend hours working on their routines, and then there are all their lines! Remembering which camera to look at can be quite a challenge too.

i laugh at some of the comments on here, such as people who watch it only have one brain cell!! haha come on you one eyed critics, get real, have you ever taken the time to really watch it, do you no the schedule these guys work? soo many wrestlers have problems with getting addicted to pain killers, there schedule includes 1-2 live tv matches a week then everyother night they are doing house shows, and get 1 day a week off, which usually consists of them travelling to the next city anyway, so therefore they get banged up pretty bad, and need the pain killers to continuing wrestling, and unfortanetly some get hook and rely on them too much, which is a shame. also the comments about them not really wrestling, have you heard the names of chris benoit, kurt angle, brock lesnar, sting, eddie guerrero, bret hart, undertaker...and many more, they are some of the purist wrestles that have ever performed, and to be honest the wwe has lost its touch when it comes to a classic 5 star match, they are very rare now, the last i'd say was undertaker vs michaels at mania 25. don't be blind and critical of omething you don't understand, or take the time to do so :-)

So everyone agrees that WWE isn't 'sport'. Its entertainment based on a sport (i.e Olympic wrestling - don't give me "you can't play...") Commercially WWE is very sucessful entertainment. It gives these incredibly agile and athletic professionals an earning stream.
Generically it is the equivalent of 20-20 cricket - same model.

Hi Brutaldog
I guess it's a nostalgia thing for me as I felt life back in a the 1960s and 1970s was alot less complicated...there was a wrestling circuit that used to go around NZ back then with characters like Bruno Bekker,Dr Death, John D'Silva and so on...I thought as a kid it was great stuff & seeing the local newspaper advertising it all...I recall that Dr Death used to wear a mask...I can recall my brother taking me to a wrestling night in a provincial NZ town and I vomited on the stand!!! Strangely the more serious matchup I saw was actually my 19 yr old cousin who fought a friend of hers back in 1969, but what I found surprising that my cousin even though she was bigger than her friend actually got beaten up big time...was size vs smaller more skill/speed. And I dunno of girls wrestling in skirts though...saw my cousin had a black triangle through her white bloomers even way back then...so yeah these are my recallections

My ring name used to Wild Joe & mANY years later I became the most hated wrestler in Austrasia under the name of Killer Zenk (the Ultimate Brutal Russian Force). I trained for many years to get there. If you don't believe its real then climb in the ring. Professional Wrestlers have to have a Police permit before they can enter a ring. A normal public person can climb in the ring, and suffer the consequences. Yous moan about wrestling , so why do you watch it. I can tell you why Because it is one of the best Entertainment you can watch (hence World Wrestling Entertainment). Just A point Watch the Belt matches, or matches like Mick Foley vs Edge in a Barbwire Match, see how real they are! Also I might be getting on a bit in years now, but people can climb in the ring with me,but I will be the only one left standing,!

In the early 1980s....it was called On The Mat with Ernie Leonard as the tv commentator...I preferred when it was called "NZ Big Time Wrestling" myself though

Speaking of the gladitorial nature of the business, the tv crews would momentarily focus on a grandmother type of lady in the audience with a hat of the yesteryear being quite animated with her umbrella during the moment....some of them really got into I must admit
I was into the wrestling thing as a kid around about 1969, now I saw my 19 yr old cousin fight her friend twice in one Saturday night...I never forgot actually as I got quite an eyeful even back in 1969...was my introduction into the female form in a wrestle

Re:Is WWE Wrestling really sport? Reply to this message
last bit of my message got cut off. I meant to say.. if they want sleazy American reality stuff like WWE then they will get it. If people continue to go to the arenas (it isn't a cheap night out!) or watch it on TV then they must like it.

Re:Is WWE Wrestling really sport? Reply to this message
pro wrestling is really a modern form of the old ancient gladatorial combat in arenas practised by the Romans back in the glory days of the Roman Empire. It uses aspects of sport like real wrestling (which in itself is an ancient and noble sport practised by many cultures around the world), high jumping, weightlifting, acrobatics and many others all wound up with acting and jousting. Similar to gladatorial combat it emphasizes physical strength, speed, dexterity and aggression. The gladitorial contests, despite popular belief, were not usually carried out to the death of one of the participants - the fighters were often highly paid professionals who were urged to put on a good show and they obviously would costs their employers money if they died so usually they made informal pacts amongst themselves not to battle to the death. The crowds, like pro-wrestling crowds, would usually choose their favourites and abuse their opponents. Of course, many deaths did occur (often by accident) because treatment was primitive and the weapons used pretty fearsome but a few gladiators survived to have surprisingly long careers and there were often long-lasting feuds between popular fighters. All this is part of what we see today in WWE sports entertainment. Above all, WWE is driven to give the people what they want and if they want sleazy American

Re:Is WWE Wrestling really sport? Reply to this message
It is sports entertainment. And please dont ever make the mistake of saying that it is fake. It is 'scripted', there is a huge difference. Once you get past the point of abusing wrestling for being 'not real', and take the time to appreciate some of athleticism of the athletes that take part it really is quite impressive. While steroids have been pointed to as reasons for wrestlers dieing early, show me a form of entertainment or sport that does not have problems with steroids.

Re:Is WWE Wrestling really sport? Reply to this message
I do know that alot of these professional wrestlers die very early...just the mention Rick Rude,Mr Perfect etc tc and the list goes on and on...the risk with taking steroids must be hard for some of them as to fit into the "big" scene of wrestling...its a huge tragedy in overdrive
When I was a kid I'd never thought this undercurrent would be there...yeah
