"rugby is a game for girls that run round chasing a ball they never touch coz they kick it all the time and score by doing drop goals Leagues a mans game"

It's moronic comments like this that really baffle me. You would never call any AB a girl to his face in private cos it would then become apparent, that YOU are the girl.

Re:Union or league? Reply to this message
I looked around at Edam Park vs Aussie and in the main stand I think I saw about 10 Maori/pacific Islanders, probably heaps more on the terraces but I couldn't feel but sad about the racial division in NZ between Union and League.League in NZ is controlled by Aussie and to have 1 team in an Aussie competion is ridiculous and leaves the South Island well out of the mix.And to have no NZ refs in the Aussie competition is also an insult. I'm a Kiwi so I support Union. I admire the hardliners who still wear their working class badges on their arms but sadly those days are gone, now the division is on racial lines.Without the mad butcher league would be still fighting with Lowie and Hart.
I am always amused by the diff attitude to foul play -in League it goes with the territory=late tackles, interference etc and the crowd loves it and the assistant umpires ignore it,but in Union soon as a bit of off the ball play occurs the refs step in.And the crowd lets them know if they have missed something. The Rugby World cup will further exacerbate the diff between supporters-as if we/them/us can afford a $1000 ticket for the finals.Without the league supporters the WC in NZ will be a dismal financial failure regardless of sponsers- and they are holding back-but as for Leagues WC that is a big joke. And what AB team could loose by 50pts to Aussie?Disgraceful,I couldn't support a team that capitulated like that.As for the game itself, both are good to watch but the lack of a Kiwi competition in NZ for league makes me pump for the local code of Union which allows players of all shapes and sizes to play whereas league has no place for the fatties anymore, crash bang play the ball between the legs, its all a bit silly whereas I prefer the skills in lineout and scrum, league is too simple and repetitive but I'll watch internationals but only occassionaly the Warriors, another strange thing with so many foreign players in the team I can't get the feeling it represents Auckland let alone NZ.

aka were are they going to play that for it to be the biggest crowd in NZ the all black test was sold out, are they putting extra seats in.As for the question i love both codes although if there was an All Black & Kiwis test on at the same time i would watch the Kiwis & rec the All Blacks.

Re:Union or league? Reply to this message
it seems to me that if you watch alot of oval ball sport,,league is more entertaining,,trouble is there are not enough "big games"..the average joe wont be intererested in melbourne playing brisbane,,even though it would probably be a good game, theres alot more big games in rugby,,,shame ,,give me league anyday,,at least when the ref blows the whistle,,,9 times out of 10,,i know why

Although both are better than soccer which is not a majority sport in nz
they are both far superior to slow moving boring soccer.
When I think of soccer, I just can't help yawning.

Re:Union or league? Reply to this message
I used to like both while I was growing up. I played both while I was growing up. I've been watching both until very recently I realised how much league is better to watch and follow. In union there are too many 1/2 and 1/2 calls which can confuse players/viewers/commentat ors/refs. Whereas league - apart from some video ref controversies - is much simpler in terms of rules. As of this year, I in fact did not watch a full super14 game and only watched ABs tests - though I nearly watched all NRL games each weekend. So League for me for now - until IRB decides to rewrite there rule books again.

Re:Union or league? Reply to this message
can anyone tell me why in order for one code to be any good, the others must be kak? I enjoy all sport and have played most. At high school I played rugby, league and soccer every weekend. All great games with different skill sets. Why do people behave like kiddies in this respect?

Re:Union or league? Reply to this message
How about Soccer. Simplest rules. The largest crowd for a sporting fixture in NZ this year will be for the All Whites Wc qualifier in Wellington. Forget the other too, rules are confusing.

Zorrothepuma: You've been in hundreds of scrums for both union and league? Hmm, then you must have enjoyed the hundreds of pats on the bum you got out of the league scrums? Nice one.

League over Union, any day. Union, as mentioned already seems to be a game of girls kicking the ball to and fro. For goodness sake run the ball straight up the guts and get some big hits in there, stop kicking the dam thing. (Just when you think being at a tennis game gives you a sore neck turning from side to side).

Re:Union or league? Reply to this message
"The scrum is a waste of time, why should a team be able to get the ball back after losing it? the scrum is pointless in both codes really."

Spoken like someone who has never been in a scrum. Union scrums are incredibly confrontational unlike league scrums which are just a bit of a pat on the bum. And yes I've been in hundreds of both.
