Re:Serious Netball Critiques Reply to this message
Hey everyone,

I have posted in ages it feels like and alot has happened in the ole netball world. Last weekend was the Waipa Pre-season netball tournament for Magic and they played against the Tactix, Pulse, Australia Institute of Sport Team and the Sydney Swifts. I watched the AIS game and was very impressed with some of Australias up and coming players mannnnn they are very strong didn't beat the Magic or come close but there are some exciting players coming through for them. They have a very McMahon look about the attack end. The Swifts yeh they were good but they were missing Gilsenan. All in all i think Magic are the team to beat but they struggle man they make things so much harder than they need to be. So i guess what i am asking is are we trying to win or look flash? Are more concerned with the way we win instead of winning? magic definately had all the flare in the world but none of their wins in the tournament were convincing. Ozzie's: they don't have a lot of flare a lot of the time but they do the basics and they do them exceptionally well! Do we need to take a page from this book? Do we need to go back to the basics?

Amen to that Janeywalnut,
I would have thought that it would be to the advantage of Netball New Zealand to let our pacific island players play for their country that way they are getting valuable international experience so that by the time they are good enough for the ferns they already have internationals up their sleaves.

Re:Serious Netball Critiques Reply to this message
There will be no Austraian player coming over our way, unless she has been dropped by Australia or is past her use by date. So in essence NZ franchises will only get the left overs of any potentially good Aussie. That is why you see the likes of Dehn and Fellowes playing here, they are not wanted. Aussie are pretty stuanch in retaining their own players. People seem to think if we have a rule with having 2 imports in, then it will not be a true reflection of our country, and will cut out our younger players. NZ is a feeding ground for Samoa, Fiji and Cooks. It is crucial that these players develop and become stronger otherwise why have a World Champs with only two countries competitive!

Righto,
Thanks for the explanation i hadn't thought of the 'extras'. and your right about the silverfern to team ratio in terms of the salary cap for each franchise i guess i was thinking about things in terms of the one international player per franchise team rule.

Re:Serious Netball Critiques Reply to this message
well how they get around this is to provide the players with "extras" like accommodation, car, employment opportunities. there will be no SF playing for an Aussie team as it is not like we have a whole lot of them for our 5 teams! Adine is preg, Paula is a baby Fern, Scarlett retired, so really it leaves us with about 12-15 players of an international standard, so split that. 5 to Magic, 3 to Flames, 4 to Auck, 3 to Steel, and maybe 1 to Pulse, although they have Mkloma as well. 300k is more than what at least four of these franchises have ever had, and players will be able to work part time as well. so all in all, put your training shoes on, and become a semi professional netballer!!

Re:Serious Netball Critiques Reply to this message
Hi maddiebeks,

Yes it is incredibly frustrating as a supporter of netball just imagine how annoyingly, unsettling it is for the coaches of the teams. Each team has a salary cap of $300,000.00. Now, there are 5 NZ teams in the ANZ comp and 12 Silverferns!! if they are only allowing one international player per team how does that figure will other silverferns have to play for an oz team??? (just asking for claryfication here!) I was reading the Waikato Times the other day and apparently Noeline has signed Henry, Van Dyk, Williams and Langman and has her eye on Tutaia but is keeping mum about that but...apparently Jodi Todd from the Flames is looking at a possible relocation! Now, how can Noeline do this??? Considering the salary cap $300,000.00 is not alot when you consider the amount of silverferns that maybe playing for Magic!!!! interesting!

Thoughts everyone!

Re:Serious Netball Critiques Reply to this message
yes the player agreement is a real sham! Now the agreement has to go to the franchises, and they are not happy with some of the clauses, so players will not be able to be contracted before Xmas. This puts pressure on franchises, as some players out there are still undecided where they are playing next year, and are being courted. They needed to have a deadline for NZ squad players like the end of Oct to indicate which franchises they would like to play for and stick with it. The Aussies are already training with squads picked, we are way behind. The proof will be where our NZ teams get in the comp

Well, well, well! Temepara is expected to be named in the Northern Mystic's - Yvonne Willering aye! good to see actually! i was hoping she wasn't bowing out just yet! And the runour that Maria Tutaia is looking at playing for Magic thats a surprise! Come on and get these blink tyeams named! NZ is soo behind the 8 ball its not funny! Oz teams are all good to go! Theres NZ stilling trying to sort themselves! But...no silverferns are have signed to a Franchise yet...no surprise there waiting for confirmation from NetballNZ no doubt!

Grrr how frustrating!

Yeh i agree ...hell have no fury like a scorned NZer aye! haha. I have to admit though! The way that Australia were playing through the week i thought they were gonna absolutely kick our butts but it wasn't a complete trouncing! we held our own at times even when things weren't good, so i geuss we can take comfort in that!

Re:Serious Netball Critiques Reply to this message
Yep, our attacking mid court flopped. I have watched and re-watched the game and Adine was not there at times, alot actually, especially on defence. Te Huna was forced to go help get the ball up our end and that broke down our shooting circle. Not all doom and gloom though. I have firm belief that next season the girls will be back with a vengance. Aussie have lost some key players, and a wounded Kiwi is dangerous. Maybe its time for a change in the Coaching department, Im not sure, Ruth seems a little ho-hum in her attitude I feel. Seems to have lost that killer edge. Like its ok to loose, we are trying new combinations, wont put Bubby in coz others might get their noses outta place. We need a bit of fire back in there.
What do you all think?

Re:Serious Netball Critiques Reply to this message
Agreed our mid court was less than desirable! Adine was not playing as we have seen her in the past and now we know why!!!! Understandably Langman was a little tentative at times! i think what we were getting at...certainly i was anyway....was the fact that the attack end was messy and was not as mechanical as it has been in the past! Jodi was tentative to shoot which left it to Irene to shoulder the game at times! As a defender who would you apply the pressure to someone who isn't confidently putting up the shot or a dead eye shot player! At the end of the day....GOALS are the things that win or lose a game! I agree though that Jodi and Irene were the best shooting combination in the team but by no means are they the best shooting combination NZ has to offer! my question is why didn't we have the best shooting combination that NZ has on the court or in the team! I would've had Donna Wilkins! Now, she has no apparent physical ailments and shes not pregnant why did she make herself unavailable???? For that matter why did 2 extremely good, expereinced players make themselves unavailable????? Could it be Ruth? (i don't know i'm just asking here!!) The undertone in media interviews are not very convincing about certainly Temepara and Ruths relationship anyway, and Donna hasn't been in the team since Ruth took over from Yvonne (an observation) Maybe Ruth has burnt her bridges with our elite netballers?

What do you think?

Re:Serious Netball Critiques Reply to this message
Ok, how many of you people actually watch and know the game of netball. Yeah TeHuna had an average game, but have you ever thought to look at some stat's?? NZ shot at 90% during that final, both Irene and Jodi, Oz shot at 70% they just had more ball...hence the midcourt needed a change!...how can TeHuna shoot if she hasn't got the ball??? and was trying to help the mid court out by getting it to Irene??? Irene and Jodi were clearly our best shooting options and had a great tournament up until the final game where I don't think you could blame one or the other, they both had their fair share of mistakes. I totally agree the defenders were fantastic, Casey especially, but I think we need to seriously look at our mid court and make changes there.

Re:Serious Netball Critiques Reply to this message
What do we think about the ANZ Competition rules about only allowing one international player a team! Yvonne Willering is calling for clarafication and makes a good point about players who play for their country teams but reside and play their netball here in New Zealand for better competition. They cannot be penalised for wanting to gain international experience by playing for their country. You would think that this would be good for NZ netball wouldn't you! Players gaining international experience by playing for another country then maybe later down the track they could be selected for the ferns. Also, do i understand correctly that this is not the case in Australia??? whats up with that Netball New Zealand! Australia have pretty much selected there teams i think?

Thoughts anyone

Re:Serious Netball Critiques Reply to this message
So Anna Scarlett has retired from Netball! Well....i can say with a fair amount of certainty that the she is no big loss! Yeh she was tall and could jump but.....thats all she had to her game! Her passing was abismal a lot of the time and like Lois Muir said she needed a lot of raining in a lot of the time she was far too undisciplined! Goosbye Anna and goodluck with Volleyball. In other news ole Donna Wilkins aye aint no stopping her! Good on her i say! i really rate her and wish that she would come back and play for the ferns. Hahahahahaha if you want to see my letter to the editor about how Ruth needs to go byebye! go to: http://www.stuff.co.nz/waikatotimes/4296945a15496. html

Hi Sparkling Duet

I agree with you whole heartedly! Goodbye Seymour you are surplus to requirements! I would have pulled Te Huna off actually and given Tutaia a shot at least a quarter she would have put them up at least maybe missed but Irene is there for the rebounds! in saying that though hindsight is a beautiful thing! Its just that Te Huna was tentative to shoot and the oz girls knew it so consequently put more pressure on Irene. What was even worse was our NZ girls knew it to so consequently gave Irene ridiculous balls at times....it was a mess! poor Irene yeh she missed some shots but she is only human and had the weight of the championship on her shoulders as Te Huna wouldn't help her! I agree that Ruth didn't have the right team for the tournament and has a lot to answer for actually! You look at the oz team every single one of them could and almost did (bar Chatfield but could have nonetheless) play in the final! Norma could interchange and play around with things! Ruth didn't have the same luxury with Tutaia, Griffin, Bowden none of them could have played in the final and to some degree even de Bruin! That to me should have been the basis for selecting the silverferns when entering the WORLD NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS!

I think a few fingers are being point at the people!!! Julie shouldn't have started the match of at WD at all, It was a wise move slotting Joline Henry in there. I think Te Huna Held up fine( well she's the best GA we have at the moment) I felt Irene's hands let her down far to much in the final!! also missing those 3 vital goals in the last quater which 1 of them would have brought us evens with aussie. I have no idea why she moves so much!! She gets all tangled up in her own legs and cuts Te Huna's drive off into the circle!!! Langman will grow into the Centre bibb, she didnt do to bad, a few bad passes into Irene I'm not sure if Julie would have done any better (she just doesn't have presence on court, you like forget that she's out there)We really didnt have the team to do the damage, needed Temapara and Donna out there

Good to read all the comments re the netball final - my 5c worth - we are always going to struggle against the Aussies until we get some mongrel! (Temepara, come back, Ruth didn't mean it!) but our biggest downfall in the game is we do not play man to man all the way up and down the court - you think how the aussies are in our faces every inch of the game, they play a tight man to man, we play a zone defense - which can be effective but it gives the aussie ball carrier space to get the pass away - they didn't give the Kiwis any space any time! And if we had a Aussie and Kiwi umpire who could keep up with the game! - I think that would make a difference -it was appalling at times. I find it interesting that there are male refs for top grade netball - I might become a rugby ref and see if I can do one of the next World Cup games! Yeah right!I wouldn't get a look in!!

Laura Langman got shut down big time and so did the Captain Adine wilson, they were too slow and Langman wouldn't let the ball flow she would hold on to it too long and by the time she went tp pass is australia were already on to her. Jodi Te Huna didn't help by putting Irene under more pressure by passing off. But i gotta gove it to the defence They were outstanding overall. Casey, Scanlan and Henry make an awesome combination when it comes to the defence.
