Bosons: Good question, contracts are enforceable agreements on paper but when it comes right down to it they are about faith and trust. It appears Sonny has allegedly broken that Trust and will seek to challenge the contracts validity for whatever reasons.

On the second part of your question, I certainly hope that it doesn't lead to contract breakers but one must question what the administrators are doing that is positive for the players and the game to ensure that whatever has lead to
to SBW leaving is addressed forthwith.

SBW is not bigger than the game, besides League has always involved this kind of hang up and that it has happened now was expected since this is also a downside of the salary cap. Its a twin edged blade, protects you on one side but slices you open on the other hand.

One likes to think that AB's will not run off and break contracts 'willy nilly' as AB's tend to want to spend say the first 5 years cementing their spot and putting bread & butter on the table and doing their bit for flag and country then the remaining 5 years of what's left of their career putting Strawberry and Jam on the table by playing in countries willing to pay them for who they have become.

Its a professional sport so maybe if your a player earmarked or on the fringes of an ALL BLACK career then putting your faith in an ALl Black Jersey is your goal initially and at the moment the NZRU is clear on this aspect...you have to be here to claim it. As you move on and the new stars start coming through they grab the places in NZ and you then satisfy yourself in the next step of playing out your career overseas possibly for the money.

The only way I see this affecting the All Blacks is if players don't believe in the value of the Black Jersey which by the way is priceless and are only in it for the money period.

We currently have a swag of ALL BLACKS playing overseas and many of them are better than the current crop but in saying that others are stepping up.

yep hear that im asking a question..

the sbw case is bieng now looked at very closly by more than the nrl thats for sure. there are going to be a few nervous nzru teams that going to be worried about this aswell

gasnier tahu and all the others walked away while not under contract. if he gets his way regardless of any other issues it will open the floogates on alot of nz rugby players breaking there contracts and jumping on a plane to j.a.p.a.n , france or england were they can throw a couple of mill around without a thought. will that then mean a end to the all blacks being a world force,,,, Maybe?

Bosons, you forget the Super League War where Gallop was one of he main legal guys advising against ARL contracts and encouraging the breaking of contracts.

It is a Professional Sport of sorts but with a disruptive restraint of trade policy like the salary cap SBW has shown them up for being so stupid in not building the code to promote itself to growth and tactics that would have kept SBW in the fold.

League is a fantastic game but it is insular and lacks the International clout afforded codes like Soccer and Rugby Union.

People think this is about SBW but it is about more than that now, it will be a shame if as is expected SBW is used as a launching pad to rip Rugby League apart like never before but Gallop doesn't have the balls or pockets to beat a billionaire and the old boys network like the IRB, now based in France.

The Bulldogs are history along with a few more clubs in Sydney alone so self preservation is better than going down with a listing ship or code.

back peddling already? ...careful you might step in all that BS you've been peddling... Gasnier's gone got anything to say about that? Nah... well maybe you were snubbed by Sonny at a game you girl's blouse ha ha

at the end of the day professional sport will have it's issues. Sonny obviously has had a gutsful of the Dogs so why the hell would you keep someone on that does not want to be there....I sure as hell hope you aren't in charge of any machinery sunshine as I can see your logic and judgement is pretty dodgey or maybe you just have it in for the brothers like the rest of these bleating bleeding hearts white media FFS

Sbw gave the finger to his club, his mates and his code."SO WHAT" why should he stay loyal? he has to look after himself.Although i love my job and am loyal to it,if someone came knocking with a better offer for doing the same or for that matter easier, job i would go regardless of what i had signed with present company. Why? because i am looking after myself and family.Pretty simple really..Love of sport or loyalty ,forgidaboutit. Money talks.Good on ya SBW and good luck. There will be a few more surprises coming thats for sure.on a brighter note great game yesterday.me and daughter froze to the core but were certainly warmed by the result.Go the warriors

I have always said if Aussie did not Have the NRL the Australian Rugby teams would be unbeatable. I think we have to get rid of the salery cap allow companies and millioners to buy our franchises this will create a pool of players ataying in this country. The NNRFU should not have control over what the blues or the crusaders etc spend there money on?

Re:For Love or Money? Who's Next? Reply to this message
alright 1st up dont care that sbw went for money .. its the the lack of respect toward the contract, his team mates, the club and the bulldog supporters. waiting seven weeks would have no doubt made him look alot better.

2nd who next mates? take your pick because when it comes down to it the nrl cannot compete for money with uk super leauge or any top rugby nations.

it has to come down to love of the game. league did poach players from rugby but remember it was amatuer so any money league offered was 100% better than what they were on.

now teams have to secure players that are young to long deals because the game is going to die pretty soon. if you think the nrl has mega bucks they dont, the french dude could run the whole bloody nrl by himself.

if you love league you have to try and see this from the bulldogs and the nrl's point of view. if the contract they negotiate can be walked out on without agreement then whats the point of having them and how do you build the club given the money is simply not there in the nrl?

in the space of a fortnight
alot of things can happen in the world of pro sports
2 big name league marquee players have signed with the 'other' code, now some may suggest sbw wasnt league, but i beg to differ on that opinion, even aussies held sbw in the highest regard, mark gasnier was one of the best centres in league for about the last 4 years,so i ask the question again, with leaguies coming off contract salary issues, negotiations and all that, whos next is all i can say? look at aus in the last few years,Rocky Elsom was poached from the roosters reserve grade,Brett Sheehan, Schifcofske,Tyrone Smith was brought back from harlequins league, berrick barnes,Henari Veratau, ryan cross, tuqiri,Timana Tahu,is it coincidental?,I think not,i think the wobbly rugby system has got on to the fact that leaguies are better defenders and are not intimidated by the size of huge guys because theyre used to the week in week out ferocity of defence in the nrl???
Whos Next:Folau,Inglis,Slater, Thurston,Anasta??

well, the samoans might do it themselves. i hear there's a growing feeling in Sa that they want to keep all of there players in Samoa so they can'develop' them and keep them together.
Madness. surely that's not the real story.

as long as in 3 years, SBW isn't running out against the AB's or Samoa in a French jersey.

good on sbw, who's the boss of who, no person owns or can control another person, only prison or physical restraint can control. If Bulldogs had paid more money then they might of had a better chance of retaining him. Despite all the " poor me " tirade coming from the NRL/Bulldogs thats the bottom line, money talks sense. Someone of SBW calibre is an asset to be protected, only now are they finding out that there money offer is nonsense. I wish SBW all the best if he joins union, his league playing days are over ( alas for NZ ) will be interesting to see his development and whether he can have such a positive impact on another great game. Go the Warriors and the AB's

not at this stage di13, he'll be available for Samoa though.

xtr365705
here's some info posted on another thread regarding Mason's morality and SBW's reaction.
apparently, early last year, SBW had a massive offer from the warriors (think Wiki's & , at that stage, Price's salaries)mason talked to him about loyalty to the dogs, and each other as mates. SBW, mason, o'meley and tonga made a pact to stay together, be loyal to the dogs and build a great team around them. SBW went to the doggy management and offered a lower deal for himself to help keep the others at the club under the salary cap. he was the first to sign then had the 'pleasure' of seeing his so called mates piss off to other clubs for bigger money, leaving him there, on a reduced deal he requested in order to follow through on a suggestion put to him by THOSE players.

Re:For Love or Money? Who's Next? Reply to this message
dach; After giving Willie Mason that morality speech on club loyalty last year he would have started thinking about it then. Willie left to earn a massive pay packet, compared to what he was getting, and all of a sudden SBW is spitting the dummy crying poormouth. Out the window went the club loyalty badge he was wearing. You can tell by the club management attitude that if they did have talks SBW didn't get it his way so he deserted; he gave his team mates the finger and walked out. Hope the NRL nails him to a wall with a writ that stops him playing anything except marbles.

Definitely the money.

Rugby was running scared of league in the 90's. The introduction of the SANZAR group at the 95 World Cup was to counter the threat of Superleague.
Now it's the NRL who are feeling the pinch. They've got development plans in the Under 20 comp so it'll be more of a slump than a collapse, but the Global market will now force these guys to walk away from tradition for the almighty pinga. Good on them.

i think league are feeling the affects that rugby felt back in the amateur days.... rugby lost john schuster, mat ridge, craug innes, eion crossan, darryl halligan, inga the winger, john gallagher, john timu and we would never how they would have went if they had stayed...

it comes down to money and financial security for the family i guess.

I suppose its just professional sport these days. NH has a big bank balance and they have to come down here and poach all NZ and Ozzy talent because they dont have any..hahahaa
Cant blame the players, I would do the same thing.

Hey Bosons when I was a kid I was a Raiders fan hard too, went to a game at Carlaw when I was a young fulla vs Manly. Still got my signed Jersey - Meninga, Daley, Mullins, Pongia, Lomax, Negas, Walters

Re:For Love or Money? Who's Next? Reply to this message
SBW is not league to me.. yes i know big draw card and all the rest but my love for the game has been from watching players that live and breathe league.( not yeah i wana play 4 da all blacks )

we are massive raiders fan and there is to me no other greater example of what im talking about than alan tounge.

my sons dream is to play for the raiders and after meeting them at the warriors game they didn't dissapoint.

as bad as the loss was and the weather etc. all the boys signed his shirt and he got a photo with his hero the toungsta..

in short and more to the point once a player starts talking about going to rugby he can just pi>> off.
