They never look away from the batter unless there are runners on base. In baseball, the runners are allowed to lead off early and get a jump. The pitcher can throw the runner out if he takes too big a lead. In softball, the runner has to stay on base until the pitcher has released the ball so no need to check.

They are checking the base runner, not looking into the outfield.

Why do baseball pitchers always make a deliberate and highly ritualized look at a specific spot on the outfield completely different from the direction they will be pitching for one to two seconds before every pitch? I can't see any reason for it and suspect it is a copy-cat thing which has become mandatory for baseball pitchers over the years. The arthritic praying stance by rugby players about to take a penalty kick for goal is fast becoming rugby's equivalent. Anyway, why do they do it? It just looks dumb! and I note that softball pitchers rarely do it. Is it just an American thing? Anyone got any clues?
