Have to say it, this time we were well beaten. Despite having more possession & a superior scrum, far too many hanfling errors & missed tackles - woeful. Great game Wallabies.

Re:The last time the ABs were 'beaten'? Reply to this message
wallabies last won the tri nations in 2001... south africa back in 2004...

but then again the wallabies have been rebuilding since 2001 and apparently are still rebuilding....

yet the all blacks - who are actually rebuilding for real - are expected to win all the time - regardless of how many primed players that have gone for the money overseas...

and im surprised that after all the talk about the all blacks losing its aura, all blacks not being the same as years before, playing a confident wallabies outfit, no richie mccaw, playing away from home.... they are today confirmed as FAVOURITES!!!!!!!!!!

hahaha like i said before - ALL BLACKS ARE BY FAR AND ALWAYS WILL BE THE TEAM TO BEAT!!!

ps: i also heard they are already favourites for the 2011, 2015 and 2019 world cups:D:D hahaha

One thing that sets NZ rugby apart for other rugby nations is the quality of depth that we have. It is difficult to have a poor All Black side with a number of quality palyers who could fill each position at international level.

It doesn't necessarily mean that there are no 'poor' performances by 'good' All Black sides because they are human and have off days such as the '99 world cup side which lost to France. It had some of our greatest players e.g. Jeff Wilson and still suffered a humiliating loss.

Good points guys, especially using Smith as an example. It is a different era, but hypothetically speaking (coz it'd never happen) how much more would the young players develop if the academy they were involved in, shipped them out to a range of clubs instead of always going to the same 3-4 strong ones. They'd develop that savvy & leadership if the had to play for, say Papatoetoe, in Auckland, where they would be looked to for experience, as opposed to a team like Ponsonby, where they just have to fit in and only think about their job.

anyway, I digress from the topic.
TRUE, there is NO such thing as a weak All Black team. Sometimes we just run out of time. ;-)

nalaleba, agree re physical abilities & match savvy, but difficult to compare the challenges of playing of different eras. All too often we hear the "in my day" kind of arguements, without proper recognition of the challenges modern-day players face. No doubt that hard-graft through age grade teams, or having real jobs while playing at the weekends gives valuable experience. However, not many old school guys had to prepare physically for the speed & strength required for the modern game. No right or wrong here - just different eras, with different challenges.

Yout left field option is straight down the middle ... telling it like it is.
ALL... and I'll repeat , ALL the "been-there-done-that" old school guys that I have meet and yarned with say the same.
All the physical abilities will only get you so far...match "savviness" is something you can't teach , you can only learn by being-there-done-that ... be it Senior C Reserve Grade or whatever. A claasic case in hand right now is the Smith/Kahui thing ... Smith has not been through the "system" and it's when the mid-field play gets "haphazard" is where he has it over Kahui. Kahui should be out there playing at whatever level , not warming a bench , if that.
But , at the end of the day, times have changed .... can't blame the players for it .... it's just the way it is.

Re:The last time the ABs were 'beaten'? Reply to this message
Good post whereisjazz, and good points in response by ivea & renee8. There is very rarely a "poor" All Black team, & it is hard to think of any occasion where the All Blacks have capitulated. I've never bought into the "choker" tag becasue of just that - the losses are virtually always close. The occasions when the All Blacks could be accused of not having mental fortitude are also rare, but because of that are memorable. You just can't have the win/loss ratio of the AB's & be written off as chokers, or having lost their aura, blah blah - all mind games. Wallabies do not have anything like the AB's win/loss ratio but no-one calls them chokers - they have a never-say-die reputation, even with losses to lesser nations or by big margins.

I don't think it's a case of there being poor teams, i think it's more a case of good/very good teams being made to look comparatively average against the the outstanding teams.

As usual sprouty your comments are welcome, but there will be more than one towel thrown.
The first will be to mop up all the spilt OZ blood, the second will be for Matt Dunning to use as a napkin. lol.

Kiwi...Kiwi...Kiwi.

looking forward to a classic!

If you wait 24hrs,you just might see it.
Prediction ABs to throw in the towel in the 53rd min with Elsom scoring two tries.

Re:The last time the ABs were 'beaten'? Reply to this message
I agree with fialemaa, things come to the young fella's to easy these days, I think a lot of them would struggle if they all of a sudden had to work a 50 hour week for a full year, on the average salary, with no support/advice/systems from the NZRFU.

As far as the worst team goes its a bloody hard question. The team of 98 that lost 5 in a row was a bloody good team on paper with some AB greats, but they still lost 5 in a row.

Someone else mentioned that the AB's have never been beaten by the likes of Argentina, Ireland etc etc while the Boks and Aussies have. The AB's also never get beaten by much, there would rarely be more then 7 - 8 points in a game the AB's lose. Its not in the psyche of our rugby players to throw the towel in, bad AB team I don't know, there aint many to chose from.

What about in 2004 where the ABs lost 40-26 to South Africa? I believe that was the last match they were playing against a better side.

Re:The last time the ABs were 'beaten'? Reply to this message
it's a left field option, but I think there's another reason. These players are now selected from high school to 'be developed' through provincial and national academies. They are all taught the same stuff, play in the best teams with the best players and best coaches. They NEVER have to struggle to fight out a win, think outside the square with tactics because they have weaker aspects in their team, or come from behind in a important close match...UNTIL they get to All Black level. Then, it's too late.

Re:The last time the ABs were 'beaten'? Reply to this message
i dont think there has ever been a poor all black side rugby skill wise.. i think the all blacks lack the mental skills other nations have, this is caused by two reasons i beleive.. firstly the pressure the public puts on them to win week in week out, and secondly by the mind games other teams play against them and seem to take their toll come big game day..
I think in 2003 aussie outplayed the all blacks in the semi final, it was the best rugby ive seen aussie play for a while although ive got hte feeling the rugby on display in 29hours and 14 minutes will be something special aswell
Aussie aussie aussie oi oi OI!!

I am backing the ABs to win in Sydney but it hopefully will be a tight contest between two good rugby sides with either side winning by only a few points. I doubt anyone, except your diehard aussie supporter, is expecting the Wallabies to give the ABs a hiding.

My question is when were the ABs last 'beaten'. They drop a game or two each year but even when they lose, like against SA, they still manage to stay in the game right up until the final whistle. When were they last outplayed by a better team who put enough points on the board that the ABs only had themselves to blame? How many years do you have to go back before you find a poor All Black side?
