Re:NPC Picks Reply to this message
Yeah di13, I agree about the "log". I hope they don't cheapen it by making it go up for grabs all games as some are suggesting.

There's some real good match-ups this week.
Canterbury and Wellington should beat Northland and Waikato easily enough , but the others ... can go any way.
Tara v Mana ... Taranaki home advantage
BOP v Auck ... A big game for both teams with the BOP winning at home
Sth v NH ... Southland at home , but if the North Harbour forwards match Southlands their backs will carry the day
Tas v Ogo ... Otago , but wouldn't put any money on it
CM v HB ... Hawkes Bay should , but ...

looks a 2 way race at the mo
welly and canty, welly smacked bop remember, bop only good at home, welly looks classy but theyre beatable in finals, they seem to always make finals and lose?!
canterbury, that james pattersons got some serious gas!!
waikato dont look threatning enough, told you southland wouldnt win,it came down to atigas ankle top on kendrick lynn,if it wasnt for that moment,i think lynn and southland wouldve been running off with the shield!?? it still has to be earnt that famous log.

Re:NPC Picks Reply to this message
Bay of Plenty look on track for a home quarter-final after last night. Bad atmospheric conditions meant could only saw about a third of the game. Some of their decision making near the end had me abusing the TV ... taking the attacking chance rather than the safe option , but well , that's just the Bay way I suppose

12,000 turned up to watch. Thats a lot of empty couche's , maybe the NZRFU waving the big stick has finally getting rugby supporters to realise the only way people that can "save the game" in their area are themselves.

I think at the end of year tour to Europe the All Blacks will be "blooding" another No.7. On last weeks match's Serge Lilo will probably be the one .... Victor Vito could be in the mix somewhere.

Re:NPC Picks Reply to this message
Great game up at New Plymouth tonight ... a few faithful didn't go , saving there dosh for the All Black romp on Wednesday ... missed out on one of the better games.
I prefer watching NPC rugby over other levels ; sure , the skill level isn't as high as S14 and the AB's , but there's more variety in the type of games teams play , and all the "mistakes or limitations" makes the game more "real"/fun ... I can relate to them from my playing days.

Taranaki finally got their lineout working ... simple really , throw it to the front if you're having problems ... not rocket science. Clarke did a great job.
What blew me out was the Taranaki mid-field ; they've been lacking a genuine playmaker for a few season's , now they have two , Welshman Spratt and Hayward from the Eltham/Kaponga club in only his second game.
First time I've seen Vanikola play ... All Black material ? No ... He's want I call a 75% winger ( a good 75 though )...his back-game is not up to it , but then the whole Northland back-three game was awol , cheap territory.
I enjoy watching Holwell play at this level too , a great director.

Re:NPC Picks Reply to this message
hahahaha di13, you are just killing me!!!!!

Okay Okay, I will take Gopperth, but please don't sentence the Blues to Holwell lol

Is there any way that the Blues might be able to get Aaron Cruder from Manuwatu? I really like the look of this guy, he reminds me a bt of a young Carlos Spencer, failing that, we gave Hurricanes David Smith, perhaps we could have Ripia?

Should be an interesting little "clash" at Wellington between some potential future All Black no. 7's ....Lilo and Fuglistaller for Wellington , and Braid for the Bay.

Re:NPC Picks Reply to this message
Picks for Week 5 ... Got 7 out of 7 last week ... not all the right margins, but I'll take it.

To bolt in:
Sth v CM ... Sth
Cant v Tas ... Cant

Closer:
Well v BOP ... Hate to have to say it ... Wellington. The next 4 weeks will see what the Bay are really like. They have four of the franchise base's in a row. They don't play Waikato but beat them in a pre-seasoner. Of these they should win their home games against Otago and Auckland(depends which Auckland team turns up on the day)
Wkt v Auck ... Auck

Hard to pick:
Tara v Nth ... Tara ... Home advantage , and over the years Northland / North Auckland have more often than not been Taranaki's "against the ladder standings" victim.
Ogo v HB ... Ogo
Mana v NH ... NH

Re:NPC Picks Reply to this message
Hey Nic,

I wouldn't say Gopperth is that bad.... I'd go as far as to categorise him in the same bracket with a Donald, Hamilton or a Holwell..... Fairly solid but not a stand out. (We wont mention Ralph!)

He had a good Super 14 a few seasons ago and I think it may have gone to his head. Weepu's done the same round trip.... If Harbour can put a steady campaign together this season, I can see Gopperth kudos increasing. He's a little bit more mature now. We'll see.

Re:NPC Picks Reply to this message
As I understand it Gopperth is "on loan" to North Harbour and still officially a Wellington player. Is this right ?

My biggest concern about the All Blacks is our lack of depth at first-five. Watching Auckland play a couple of weeks ago those concerns were eased by Munroe's game , then last week he was at fullback .... What is his "true" position ?

Re:NPC Picks Reply to this message
di13, please do not ever suggest that again!!! Jimmy Gopperth is average at best, and I would personally prefer to have Toeava at 5/8 than Gopperth.....and I don't even like Toeava at 5/8.

yip good game harbour, gopperths not playing too bad, could be in line for a blues spot?! waikato looked a little more assured with donald at 1st 5 and bruce at 12,still not clicking though!! your right, lauaki is not going so well,at a time when he could be the starting 6 for the abs with jerry out of the pic,he hasnt grasped the opportunity to claim that 6 jersey like i thought he couldve, bugger!! i think they just missing a hardened experienced campaigner like a jono gibbes or holah, but you cant make excuses, theyve got good enough players, theyre all mostly s14 players bar a few new ones,so i dunno wussup there?!
wouldve been nice to have had kahui and leonard too!!

Re:NPC Picks Reply to this message
HEY di13@xtra.co.nz,

I was at the game yesterday.... got a bit tight towards the end, but Harbour pulled through for the first time this season - Yeehhaaaaa! Boric and Tuitevake had BIG matches, Lauaki's got some HUGE issues with ball retention! lol!!! There were some massive hits during the game and I bet a few bruised bodies (and egos) to boot.I like the look of Anthony's brother out on the wing.... he's got some good skills and they pair up well together.

Was excellent to see Richard Kahui and Brendon Leonard in the stands behind us.... Leonard drinking a couple of quiet Speights instead of that disgraceful Waikato Draught....hahaha! Got a great photo of the two of them together - smiling even in defeat!

Go Habour! Now for the Bucketheads!

Crowd of 14,000 at the Northland game ... should make the NZRFU think twice if they can get that again ...hope so.
Or is it a case of (as Joni Mitchell sung way-back)..." Ain't that the way it seems to go , you don't know what you've got till it's gone " .... hope not.

Picks for week 4

Easy
CM v Ogo ... Ogo
Sth v Well ... Well , though Southland have a history of upsetting Wellington
Tara v Cant ... Cant
Auck v Mana ... Auck , to much physicallity for Manawatu to handle.

Close
Nth v BOP ... BOP , usually a pretty "willing" game between these two with the "form-book" not relevant.
Tas v HB ... HB
NH v Wkt ... NH , neither with a win yet . North Harbour has had some close ones , while Waikato ... what can you say ; the suprise package of the season , for all the wrong reasons
