so you think he got selected for the all blacks this year on his 2006 NPC form? I dont think so.
You obviously did not see him playing S14 this year. When he was injurt free mid competition he was devistating.
It's all moot really, time will tell. IMO all he really needs is game time and he will make the 13 jersey his own. |

Settle down renee and remember to take your pills. If youare going to quote me, do it right. I said that Ellis was electric on the end of year tour two years ago. I have not actually argued that he should be number one at the moment, just that he shouldn't be ruled out in the future. Please get it right!
I would actually love it if he proved me wrong. I was just saying that as things stand at the moment, I think Smith is the man for the 13 jersey and i think we should play a specialist wing.
I was just making a point that everyone is getting hugely carried away with this guy almost to the point of saying he's a star player onm the basis of a very good air NZ cup two years ago.
We shouldn't get carried away. He may be great...but he hasn't shown it yet |

struggling with injuries is one thing.
1st choice 12 out for the season before the first game
Captian out for most of the season early on
Star centre injured early in the season
at one point first and 2nd choice half backs were injured
just to get started. injuries had a huge bearing on the chiefs season there is no doubt about it.
It's true all teams strugle with injury but I think the chiefs got more than their share.
Anyway I dont see why you need to dispute that it's not nothing to do with the topic anyway. It was just a random observarion of mine.
The argument was, when Kahui was fit and playing this year he was in great form. If not how did he get selected for the All Blacks? |

| larksea, any team is going to get injuries to key players during a season. The Saders struggled without Brett and Carter for a time but were still able to notch up the points. |

dhume
Kahui was dominant in the S14 the problem was he carried an ankle injury that kept him off the field much of the time.
it did give us a chance to see another of his traits though which is when he comes back from injury he slots in perfectly like he was never gone.
he got an ankle injury that was mis diagnosed, he came back too early and injured it again. Up untill that point I saw him as an automatic pick for the all blacks he was playing so well. But to be honest I thought because he missed the last few games he would not. But t seems the selectors had seen enough and picked him anyway.
the chiefs drop off late in the season was because of injuries to key players. I still think that patch mid season when they had a fit side they were the best team in the comp.
Importantly Kahui and Leonard were injured and that was pretty much the end of the line for the chiefs. |

Larksea. I don't dispute that he looked the goods in 2006 but he hasn't performed consistently since and that is 2 years ago now.
I personally think he is very overrated. Sure, he did have one good test here he did well to run off DC to pick up a try and to give him his dues, he defended impressively. I just don't think he's everything he's cracked up to be. And to grasp at straws and keep harking back to good performances 2 years ago tends to suggest he has been slightly disappointing since.
He did outperform Laulala in the crusaders match but so did the whole team and particularly the forward pack.
I have o admit watching it as a cantab, I remember watching the chiefs hugging each other like they had won the FA Cup and thinking that it looked like they had played their final. That's the way it turned out too as they went steadily downhill from that point on. In contrast the Saders continued to battle some indiffernet form and managed to hang in until they smoked the Canes in the semi. The waikato mentality needs to change and the players need to realise that one or two games don't make a season. |

Kahui only just performing in 2006 NPC?
he was NPC player of the year and top try scorer...
what stod out for me was how me made the guys marking him look totaly ordinary. Guys like Tana, Nonu, Smith, Laulala. |

1st off - Austin, Perez - very average - Who rates them at all?
Smith - Rated by many as up and coming all black wing.
Had bout a billion chances against amateur perez and yet got nowhere.
Has had many opportunities to cement spot on wing in super 14 but spent most of this year not even in 22. |

as soon as Masaga learns to tackle he'll be there, hopefully end of year tour. We miss joe big time.
Kahui is good, deserves to be there and has a bright future but he is anything but a superstar, he was only performing in NPC and I don't remember him blowing everyone away in 06. I remember when he first made waikato, he was distinctly average but I guess he was only 19 or so. |

there are a lot of prospects out there for wing. Gilford is another.
With my pick on Masanga, he has some areas to work on. But it's his all out speed which is something you cant just train for some of that ability is a natural thing i'm sure. Like Habana, reality is he's only really an average or above average player in terms of skill but his all out speed makes him such a huge threat.
I dont think I've over rated Kahui. he was a superstar in 2006 blew everyone away. had injury problems since then but even so at time when he's marked like likes of Nonu, Smith & Laulala he's made them look ordinary. At one point I think he scored 3 tries in a game marking Smith & Nonu. Totaly out played Laulala in Curcaders vs. Chiefs games.
I think he has showed his defence is a level above smiths in the last few games for the AB's
That cover tackle he cut down Loti with in the last test was sublime. I dont think anyone else in the AB squad could have pulled that off. Also not the bad miss Smith had on Mortlock and his bad miss later in the game that Kahui ended up cleaning up.
last but not least, the guy is like 22 years old with only a couple of tests to his name. He plays like he's been in the AB's for years. In his first game he slaughterd england.
With SBW all he needs to do is be as good in union as he was in league and he will be a superstar. It's a simple as that. If you say he wont amount to anything your betting against him doing what he's been doing for years, physicaly dominating his oposition. And again he's only 22-23. |
