I hadn't "discovered" this message board at the time of the World Cup , which was probably a good thing. My "spin" on the McCaw not going for a dropkick thing is this.
In the five previous World Cup finals two had gone into extra-time and were decided on dropkicks. I would have expected that every member of that All Black squad that was capable of dropkicking would have gone over this at training, under simulated conditions of extreme pressure , again and again untill they could do it in their sleep. So McCaws decision not to tell McAlister to go for it because it was too much pressure for a young player .... it should not have been in his thinking.
I am a great supporter of Henry , Smith , and Hansen ; but sometimes people can be so absorbed in sussing out the "complexities" of a situation they can miss the blatantly obvious. |

Sorry for being abusive on an earlier posting ... you caught me in a bad mood . I think you hit the nail on the head when you said " the pain of last yr will always be with us ", hence my over reaction to a light-hearted comment. In 1928 the NZRFU Judiciary banned a player for 5 years for the heinious crime of taking the whistle off the referee and refusing to give it back. The guy has my sympathy and understanding. |

i agree with you tekai, i haven't seen you on this thread before, but like all the other threads, people (particularly those form canty) seem to think if you criticise McCaw for anything you have committed a crime punishable by hanging.
Its old hat, but no matter what anyone says McCaw stuffed up during that game with his tactics. It just suits some people to lay all the blame at Henrys feet.
As Hanson said on Sports Cafe last week, McCaw has developed hugely as a captain since last October, I reckon its pretty obvious from his captaincy this year that thats the case. I doubt he would make the same tactical decesions again if given the chance, same goes for Henry.
Both seem to have learned from their mistakes, which can only be a good thing for NZ rugby. |
