Re:The lions in Africa Reply to this message
The springboks have been named.

Springbok team: Frans Steyn, JP Pietersen, Adrian Jacobs, Jean de Villiers, Bryan Habana, Ruan Pienaar, Fourie du Preez, Pierre Spies, Juan Smith, Schalk Burger, Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, John Smit (captain), Bismarck du Plessis, Beast Mtawarira.

Replacements: Chiliboy Ralepelle, Deon Carstens, Andries Bekker, Danie Rossouw, Heinrich Brussow, Jaque Fourie, Morne Steyn.

Changes from the first test:
1) Heinrich Brussow drops to the bench for Schalk Burger
2)Chiliboy Ralepelle comes onto the bench in place of Gurthrö Steenkamp
3)Ricky January misses the out on the 22 altogether

apart from that it is the same team that beat the lions

Lions midweekers 13-13 Emerging Boks

Good effort by the young boks, but again this was not the lions top team (although you still would have expected a bit more from these guys as most are pretty experienced)

Game was played in Cape Town in bad conditions with the Eboks scoring in the last few seconds to tie the match up.

As for running the boks around that seems like a good idea although the lions did have the majority of possession in the last test and still lost. Whats more is that at altitude it may be a bit harder for some of the lions players. But good plan otherwise. The conditions were awesome for the first test and hopefully they will be for the remainder of the tour.

{One more thing I would like to say 21 northern Hem players were injured so not eligible to be picked, so RC this is not the best we have to offer}

Ha ha!
So, you've got injuries and that's a perfect reason for losing- we got massive injuries and win and according to the ABs are in trouble?
But you're right- that team is not the best by a mile.

Re:The lions in Africa Reply to this message
Hey dirty Late aint it?? not so much the offside, but winning the ball on the ground we went for it, playing the ball on the floor, or off our feet. the Boks would do the same but they would get the penalty, we were supposedly holding on when it was obvious they were spoiling and trying to slow it down.
In a fast open Game they will not cope with us they knew it and they got away with quite a lot.
We all pinch a little here and there but it must be the same for both sides.
I think the ref was in SA and played to the crowd.

Dirty it's all right I've told renee to watch it again, you never know he might pick up something, Good night to you

Re:The lions in Africa Reply to this message
andy, I have to agree, the beast was driving in on the angle for the entire first half, why he didn't get pinged is beyond me, as for offside infringements, nah, didn't see them.

Re:The lions in Africa Reply to this message
Shippy!! an honest assesment finally, yes the boks were out on their feet by the end, the scrum was a disaster, sometimes you play against someone and they are taylor made for you, I think this was the case and the dodgy calls, ;) the centre pairing will worry any side.

We need to win the ball then run the boks around, when we had the ball in hand we threatend their line over and over, our kicking game was not at its best, because of their superiority in the line out they were not afraid to kick for touch.
I think the boks were lucky time was called when it was 5 more min and it might have been different the boks will know they got out of jail.

One more thing I would like to say 21 northern Hem players were injured so not eligible to be picked, so RC this is not the best we have to offer. several more have been injured and gone back home so in some positions they are playing 2nd and 3rd choices.

Regards Andy

Re:The lions in Africa Reply to this message
****As far as the ref's interpretations go, we have that same challenge everytime we have a NH ref. Thats just what happens, I look at what the lions and NH teams in general do at the break down and have the same reaction as you did watching the Boks Andy. When the AB's play a NH team with a NH ref they have the skill set to change their game plan and still win....convincingly.***** ***

I know that rennee but the breakdown is fair to both teams Bryce lawrence was not, penalised us for doing what the boks were doing and getting away with. perhaps you should take those rose coloured specs of yours off and watch the match again and not be bias in your judgement.

As for the Mighty Abs I just saw the game, could have gone either way, if the French man had not droped the ball over the line good night. I think your team has problems Renee.

Penalised in the 31st min I think we watched two different games.

Thanks, it was a very happy aniversary. ;0))

Andy

PS You really should try to look at things objectively Renee and not be so blinkered.

Re:The lions in Africa Reply to this message
If it wasn't for the rash subs that De Villers made the lions wouldn't have gotten close. They got dominated in the scrums and outmatched at the breakdown. I will give them credit for fighting back and for the center pairing. Those two kept the lions in the game for long periods.

I heard an interesting point made on Re:union (NZ rugby analysis)in that they reckoned that one of the reasons for the boks almost capitulating was their fitness (or lack of it). If this was the case then the boks will be good for sat.
I can only see the boks improving and their experience will get them through the next game.

BTW happy aniversary Andy

Re:The lions in Africa Reply to this message
Happy aniversary Andy.

On to the rugby, I can't believe you are blaming the ref for the scrum, among other things Andy, that really is quiet astounding, but in true British form i suppose.

Vickery was the corner stone of the much vaunted (well in the north anyway) English forward pack which prided itself on its scrummaging. Its a bit rich to turn around now and say Vickery's not a scrummaging prop.

Vickery got smashed, the Beast was not folding in or popping up, Vickery was because he couldn't handle the heat. He was warned on 4 occassions by the ref before he was finally penalised in the 31st minute.

By the time he was subbed a lot of the heat had gone out of the Boks forward play, the Beast had played 45 minutes while the Lions reserve prop was fresh!!

As far as the ref's interpretations go, we have that same challenge everytime we have a NH ref. Thats just what happens, I look at what the lions and NH teams in general do at the break down and have the same reaction as you did watching the Boks Andy. When the AB's play a NH team with a NH ref they have the skill set to change their game plan and still win....convincingly.

You'd be better off thanking the good Lord that the Boks have an idiot like Peter "the village idiot" devillers in charge. If he hadn't made all those subs when he did, they would have put another 10 on you guys.

Re:The lions in Africa Reply to this message
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha I see the usual suspects Have all had their say, I have just finished watching the game.
Firstly let me say. Vickery is not a renowned Scrumager secondly did you really watch it or were you all gloating over the seemingly poor performance.

I don't usually criticise the ref, but Bryce lawrence had a shocker no more so than the front row,
Mtawarira was folding in and driving up which is illegal Brussow and smith lived off side, the breakdown was refed differently for the lions, so much so that the management team have cited Lawrence to appear befor a board of the I.R.B.
Now then, the game, as I have already said Botha and Matfield the worlds best so losing the line out was not that surprising, the scrums I have pointed out.
When a scrumaging prop came on the Beast was tamed and it will be a very different story the next time.
As for open play we dominated here their midfield was breached time and time again, we also scored Three tries to their Two, We need to win the ball, if we do that and hold our own in the set piece we might yet surprise you all.
Our midfield tore the boks apart three tries went begging.

You see it is not only the boks that haven't played together but this team of lions had'nt untill saturday, so that works both ways.
For the first 50 min the boks were allowed to get away with so many infringments I looked on in disbelief.

renee It was My aniversary my wife and I went away, Rugby was not the formost part of my thinking.
But I don't need to think of what to say I say it as I see it. Now I might watch the French against the not so mighty ABs.

Andy

Re:The lions in Africa Reply to this message
Boks took the boot off the throat, the Lions were badly outplayed in all areas.
The gap between north and south has never been bigger.
Hopefully the Safricans make the fatal mistake of slackening off late in the game during the Tri nations.

Re:The lions in Africa Reply to this message
In my opinion, the tough game was the first one. Playing at sea level gave the Lions the best chance at cracking the Boks - and they almost did! Another 5 minutes would have made a difference....

But moving on..... Boks will be too strong on the highveld and I expect them to win this next game by 10 - 18 points.

32 - 18 or therabouts.

Before the weekend I think Andy said he was going away for a while and he wouldn't be posting in that time, they mustn't have computers where he's going?! Must have known what was coming.

Also haven't heard from 2018 either, he came on here out of nowhere after the Frogs won the 1st test putting in his 2 cents worth but strangely enough, as I predicted, we haven't heard from him again since the AB's won???

I'm sure once Andy has formed his defence he will pop up.

andy?
What happened to your superior northern players andy?
You'd think with those hardcore, skilled northern comps the cowardly lions play in, they wouldn't get humbled like that.
(Well, you would but not the rest of us who watch real rugby.)

<<The much vaunted Phil Vickery got absolutely smoked by the beast, I haven't seen an ar.se kicking like that for years.>>
Reminds me of Sommerville owning the "legendary" Sheridan last june. lol.
That Lions scrum was in tatters. How can there be any other interpretation by the ref? Although I can recall the AB scrum being repeatedly penalised when they were all over the Aussies.

Re:The lions in Africa Reply to this message
Just finished watching the replay of the Boks - Lions game.

Man, the boks owned the lions forwards, demolished them for the 1st 60 minutes. The much vaunted Phil Vickery got absolutely smoked by the beast, I haven't seen an ar.se kicking like that for years.

The funny thing about it was the Lions coaches and captain complaining, in true British fashion, about the ref after the game saying the ref's interuptations were what was causing the problems at scrum time...WHAT...unbelieveab le, same shyte during the game, O'Connell bit.chin and moaning to the ref about this and that,.... out of their league thats what.

If the Boks hadn't made 7 chnages and eased off big time they would have won by another 10 points.

Boks 26

Scoreline suggests that it was close (which it was for the last few minutes) but the sprinboks dominated the first 50

Springboks: 38
Cowardly Lions: 12

Don't forget, these are the best players from the home nations, bred in their magnificent northern competitions.
And they'll get well stuffed by the parennial third place Tri nations side.
