pi.xel, what would have been the sense in sending Mac to the JABs, different team, different systems, different level, he would come in to the AB's for 3N's and still have to start from scratch, it makes no sense.
"The selectors have staked their reputation on Mac"
What a pile of shyte, why on earth would you suggest that they have staked their reputation on him, thats just a stupid thing to say.
"2 major mistakes in 2 showings 1 of which cost us the game...i think the plan is going to be modified to let him ride the coat tails of Donald, if only to save their jobs!"
Mate you carry on don't ya, one intercept pass didn't cost the AB's the 1st test you knob, the 1st 40 mins cost them the test.
And what was the other major mistake, let me guess, you must be talking about the 3 missed kicks at goal, oh nah maybe it was ruining a simple 3 on 2 over lap and screwing up a certain try for Jane, oh hold on maybe it was the 5 or 6 pointless dinky little kicks in behind that the French were reading in their sleep, or maybe the 2 drop balls while the AB's were on attack, or maybe the 3 or 4 mid field bombs from within our own 22 when we were hard on defense and needed some field position, oh sorry I was getting my 1st 5's muddled up, all of the above can be attributed to Donald Duck.
I don't want to bit.ch on about Donald, he was trying his best, but anyone who tries to compare the atrocious game that Donald had last night and in the 1st test with Mac's previous AB preformances and the ONE ball he did knock on last night is just pathetic.
"Ride the coat tails of Donald" ha ha ha ha thats funny, why would anyone wnat to ride on the back of what Donald has done in the blk jersey, then again I suppose expectations will be incredibly low... |

| Donald is a very solid defender but his general kicking style is too jerky and about half a sec slower then other top class 10s, and an extra half a sec is more enough for an international openside to harass an average 10. Luke Mc is much more fluid in his movement and clears his kicks more efficiently, the problem with him tho is that he does over use the little chip kick and chase. |

| Donald is not an international #10, you just cant rely on him to turn a game, getting rid of him really aint the answer cause there really aint anyone else around, NZ is going through a drain of talent! When I look at who is coming up it looks pretty bad as there is no one! |

| What they should've done was send Mac to the JAB's and start him playing there if they wanted him up to speed and confident. The selectors have staked their reputation on Mac and fast tracking him was a risky thing to do. As it is, 2 major mistakes in 2 showings 1 of which cost us the game...i think the plan is going to be modified to let him ride the coat tails of Donald, if only to save their jobs!. |

paua i agree, its always been the plan. Donald is a really good provincial player, but I wouldn't even say he is an average test player based on what he has shown over the last 2 years at test level.
I reckon they will give Mac a start against the Italians. They have to, I wouldn't want him going into the 3N's with only some time off the bench. |

Has anyone noticed Donalds kicking style - mainly his long field kicks/bombs? He has the style of a 5 year old! You know how little kids kinda chuck the ball somewhere out in front of them and then swing their boot wildly to try & connect but usually miss.
Im not saying little kids are better than Donald, because to his credit he manages to get boot on ball at least 75% of the time. Donald the Woeful Wombat |

I think that the ABs have a clear plan around the 10 jumper... They obviously rate Lucky (McAllister) and I am sure their plan has always been to have him there come trinations time... But they have had to "nurse" him back, because he hadn't played 10 for ages and he hadn't played any rugby for 3 months... So getting him up to it would be part of the plan, training paddock and game time of the bench...
Also they probably decided that Donald needed to be given the first three tests of the year, and for his confidence was probably told that... The thinking being "this is your chance to stake your claim"...
The reality is that Donald is a journey man, he's GOOD, but is not GREAT... and NZ is used to GREAT at 10, we have been very spoilt there through the years... Now Lucky can be GREAT (well greater then Donald) and so I expect to see Lucky back in the Tri Nations, after being "managed" back... |

| Donald looks hesitant & unsure. Everything seems to be done off the cuff with no planning. Good flyhalves direct their team, Donald appears like he's looking for directions. McAllister brought a bit more composure to the game. |

| The thing is we have yet to see Donald playing alongside Weepu. Hopefully, we'll get to see that happen next week... |

| on combination's i think they way the AB's are playing 9/10 combo is just as important as the 10/12. Weepu and Donald are a perfect match because of their attacking styles...Weepu provides fast clean ball, Donald is fond of attacking the line and he does it well. I thought Cowan was pretty average. I don't know why the coaching staff insist on him starting when Weepu has proven that when he plays the AB's go FOWARD. |

dirtydsnz, I think we're screwed if Donald doesnt improve for the trinations this year.
Oh man, that list looks worse than the recession.
No.1 is not even in the team.
No.2 is unpopular starring in 2 shockers.
No.3 is on the bench.
no NZ franchise wants No.9 and so hes gone.
and No.6 is really a halfback.
lol |

How about Evans? lol, jks.
Gotta stick with Donald, he's our only back up to Carter, he'll have to improve his game because the Tri Nations will be very hard this year. |

Well, I just hope we can get this "Cater" fulla to play for us :-)
My list would be
1. Carter
2. Donald
3. McAlister
4. Slade
5. Brett
6. Weepu
7. Bowden
8. Berquist
9. Gopperth
10. Toeava
...but seriously, if we have to use anyone else outside Donald or McAlister for the TRI then we're screwed this year. |

The top NZ fly halfs in my opinion are:
1/ D Cater
2/ D Cater
3/ D Cater
4/ Steven Brett
5/ McAlister
6/ Weepu
5/ Stephen Donald |

bandit, disagreed. Bringing him in over McAlister I think is more of a risk than McAlister as a starter.
Plus McAlister has played in the trinations before, so his experience over brett and donald is a big factor to consider I reckon. |

| At this point in time i'd rather Brett stand in if Donald gets teh downgrade. Next week against the 2nd tier nation McAlister will probably look good but against South Africa i dont rate him as a starter unless hes gameplan is to play it safe with the boot. On attack he's time off has shown how rusty he is for the primetime... |

well ya know, goin by donalds performance tonight, the thought of toeava being there doesnt sound so crazy anymore.
Or does it? lol
Are we jumping the gun, coz McAlister is a no brainer,...I dont mind Weepu as backup either, because to me he definately has a presence and a command in the backs. |

Bit of a theme with those players you mentioned there - all from canterbury, I know you all hate us because were soooo good ;)
Despite that I nearly agree with you - Blair, N Mauger, Weepu, Lauaki, Boric, Gibbes, Rawlinson, Tuitavake all did well NPC/S12/S14 but bombed completely at test level. IMO Donald needs a new list with just him & stupiddo Lauaki somewhere below the others |

Point taken ghost.
I forgot Carter was an alien.
lol, seriously though, Need we push McAlister's case any further for no.10? Even though its not his preferred position, Id sleep better if he was. |

Donald joins Ellis, Blair, Ralph and N Mauger as the biggest joke ABs this decade.
The best thing he can do is take the soon to be offered northern contract and bugger off to dreary club rugby land- he'll be a superstar up there. |

My point about feeling sorry for him was a reference to the fact that HE IS HUMAN.
Another fact - Not all humans are meant to be All Blacks
Thats why I feel sorry for him......he actually tried |

I agree jefferson, I think the trouble is WHO can do a better job (until dans back), is it going to be McAlister, Brett, Weepu - I dont like any of them at first-five but I would rather any of them instead of Donald.
Any other options out there? |
