If they wanted the AB's to sing along then they need to get rid of the operatic performances...most of them aren't even that good imo. Watching the boys trying to sing in the same key as the "professionals" is hilarious. Big, rugged fellas trying to stay intone with high pitched voices is just lol. No wonder some of them don't even try...

Some of the best national anthems hark back to darker days of oppression. France, Scotland, Sth Africa...there all about overcoming some form of injustice or oppression. Nz on the other hand just doesn't have it's own internal epic history unless you count the Maori wars. Either way, its a part of our culture i think the English descendants would rather forget about so were left with GDNZ and GSTQ. A nostalgic reminder that this country, like Australia, does not have any formal separation of church and state!(one of the obstacles stopping Nz from becoming a republic)

In seriousness though why is this an issue now?
ABs have never been big anthem singers. On the whole we are unassuming retiring types who do our talking on the field. Let the poor guys psyche themselves up in whatever way works best.

Noone you silly man ? The dance is called the dance of the frustrated Baboons, suppose a baboon could even become embarrassed watching it. No wonder the more intelligent are not turning up for games.

NOONE

take a walk spoon!

On topic! The ABS singing is such a ludicrous thing to get worked up over I think that Henry was a total dropnuts for choosing to be diplomatic in regards to this insignificant facet of what we see on the box.

Since when did teh media become the watchdog for ultra nationalists! It's fkn Rugby played by indviduals all of whom should be allowed to have their own sesne of the occassion and not told how to by the NZ public... Please follow NOONE to the nearest sanitarium! LMFAO

Who cares if they sing or not, but to have to watch them do their dance of the frustrated baboons before every game is the really sad part. The Haka is only for the Neanderthal types.

Re:national anthem stuff. Reply to this message
Me and my wife were at the lions test in CHCH in 05'.I've never heard a New Zealand crowd sing with such passion. To the point the very staunch looking blokes standing next to us had tears in their eyes as we did.
For people to say our national anthem has no tempo is just an excuse not to be patriotic.
If your representing your country it should be the ultimate privilage and singing the national anthem is something you should want to do.Maybe we have too many people playing for the allblacks who dont class themselves as NewZealanders.

Re:national anthem stuff. Reply to this message
i enjoy watching the european countries sing their anthems they all get really into it, but i feel our anthem just doesn't have the tempo to fire anyone up its just lucky we do have the haka.

I'm sure more kiwi's know the words to that than the entire national anthem (English or Maori version)

Re:national anthem stuff. Reply to this message
not the whole haka - I mean Piri led the haka as usual and he does it bloomin well. But there were background noises too - or at least I thought there were - would like to hear from someone who was at the game

Watched the game on Austar in aus, the haka in pre-recording? missed that, but both anthems were lip synching?
Why are they always Opera Singers ?! I mean they don't do the anthem justice.

i agree with RC too long maybe rewrite it with english and maori in same verse. Most people turn off b4 the first verse finishes.
