speaking of the haka - what was with the pre-recording? Sounded like a kapahaka group with a few gaps for Piri to holla some.

Once the Maori verse was tacked on in a pointless PC gesture, our anthem became way too long.
Let's drop the English part and get it over with.
Nzers are not passionate people on the whole- it was unusual to see Kelleher and Xavier Rush belt it out with the tears and all.

I would prefer they drop our anthem altogether, the ities get passionate about their anthem, aussies get up for waltzing matilda, we have the haka

Its our anthem so it gives me pride to sing it, but I have to wonder why they insist on singing a slow anthem opera style which most people cant sing along to, sing it normally

I think the anthems should be sung well, even if the players cant sing in tune. It looks great when you see the whole team belting the anthem out. I remember at the RWC in '07 the Romanian team belted out the anthem, you could see that they were really fired up over it.

Hmm anthems, should be about the soul of your country the people are its heart.

Some time ago I cant remember the year, at a rugby match between England and Wales only god save the Queen was played, the boos could be heard up the Rhondda valleys,

Never again has the anthem of Wales not been sung with gusto and soul at a rugby match.

Wales, Ireland or Scotland don't sing GStQ

I've never taken Much notice of your Anthem I am usually waiting for the Hacka, I suppose that speaks volumes about the Anthem you use.

Re:national anthem stuff. Reply to this message
Actually some of the posters here are wrong - GDNZ isn't the only national anthem we've got - GSTQ is still one of our TWO official national anthems. We are unique in this. It's used for viceregal and royal occasions. We never had the heart to pull that far away from Mother England when we first used GDNZ at the 1974 C'wealth Games and GSTQ has been there ever since.

About ten years ago the manager of the Regent (live) Theatre in Dunedin found an old film container under the stairs. He took out the film reel and ran it thru the projector. Turned out it was the old reel of film of the Queen at the Trooping the Colour ceremony that was played whenever films were shown in NZ. In those days everyone stood while this National Anthem (GSTQ) was playing.

So for fun he played it at the next showing of international films. Half the audience shuffled to their feet and the younger ones wondered what the hell was going on

its ours, its our only one and it should be sung by our sports teams...would these same people want us not to have it played at the olympics when we win gold?....i think not...it is for kiwis to show their pride in where they come from and represent us all.....

Sure is! There are some real good anthems out there that I just love hearing.

Yea, our anthem isn't a very good one. I mean, it is too religious and doesn't inspire you much. But hey, I guess it's not going anywhere and it's what we have. I would love to see our players put their hand over their hearts at the very least like the South Africans. You don't have to sing it but make some sort of attempt at showing love for your country.

I love New Zealand.
And I get pissed when i continually read about the braindead that want to carry on gnawing away out our coinage, change the flag, hate the nat. anthem, abuse our sports teams when they lose, abuse the citizens of other cities. This isn't democracy this is out and out amnosity that has become the reputation this country has got. We kill off our babies, our kids, our senior, tourists, in numbers that for the size of our population is an outrage. We've become a sicko country and all that some want to do is put it down even further.

powley9; read my comment; I didn't say it was good or bad, just that it's what we have and it should be respected and used properly. And yes I also like the French one.

it still doesnt have reference to the queen, so thats an invalid complaint. i'm proud of our national anthem.. who cares about it at the rugby, its at the olympics where its most important, and at anzac day.

Re:national anthem stuff. Reply to this message
The anthem sounds like a hymn with its religious overtones in its lyrics,I personally find it hard to sing to because of it,the melody sure is not very stirring is it,it sounds even worse when ever it is sung after say the french anthem.

How old is the Australian anthem, coz it's not bad. Ours is boring as, and I can't stand it sung twice, once in maori, then in english, how dumb is that. Maybe we should have one similar to S.As, where it's mixed.

that was for larksea
Our Nat. Anthem is what is it and it has been that way since 'God Save the Queen'was dropped; so get used to it. It also doesn't matter what it is; it is there to be respected by the likes of the AB's; who seem to spend hours rehearsing the 'secondary' format the haka.

I love NZ

I'm proud of this land, I've traveled around the rest of the world. Been to some awesome and exotic places but I'm always happy to get back.

But honestly, our anthem is so damn boring and uninteresting, uninspiring...

It's basically a prayer? What if you're not religious? The rest of it is directed towards the queen? England's queen!

My ancestry is British but what connection to it do I have today? Germans are more welcome in Britain today. And even though I have a message from the queen in the front of my passport - I as a New Zealander who has spent time in Britain already am not really welcome back and was once denied a tourist visa there because they thought I would look for work there.

To me our history with Britain means almost nothing to me as a New Zealander.

So what of the all blacks? They are of the same generation as me, yet many of them don't even have the British descendantcy I have.

Why should they have to sing it?

Then consider the chance it may not even be musically attractive to a lot of people.

I think this partly dawned on me after the first french test when after the game begun I started to whistle the french national anthem.

Which I honestly think is really cool.

And also to be honest i'm jealous when those sheep shaggers over the ditch get to sing there anthem. It's a nice tune and it's a song that identifies with them, a tribute to the land they live in.

that's what we need IMO
