"15 muliaina - captain
14 tuitavake - underrated but a great player should have 20+ tests by now
13 smith - reliable
12 nonu - always a threat from 1st to 80th minute
11 gear - creator & finisher, exciting. Something lacking atm in ab's
10 brett - always seems to have time, a great sign for 1st-five. we need a backup. donald and part time luke arent it
09 weepu - 2nd best goalkicker in nz (behind carter)
08 lauaki - has potential to be our own 'chabal', but needs time. He is worth the wait imo
07 kaino - can fill this void, experienced, ball runner
06 read - solid
05 williams/ross - ali definite but ross has great future
04 thorn/boric - champion and boric same as ross
03 afoa - eye to 2011
02 mealamu/hore - both great 2s
01 woodco** - cornerstone"
I really like the look of this team team except a few positions i would put on the bench. So'oialo starts 8, his work at the breakdown with McCaw is second to none and its been sorely missed. Lauaki is the a very effective impact player (when he's playing with confidence). At 14 i would stay with Masanga with Tuitavake as a utlity on the bench, he can cover 12/13/ or either wing leaving 10 for Donald/ Brett...experience will most likely win over talent when the it comes to Aus or SA so most likely Donald starting (unless of course Carter is back). |

Beleive it or not ol' Buncey calle dthat too based on Donald being a specialist whereas Macca isn't...WTF? All Macca needs to do is make u[p his mind what he's doing communicate it then execute when everyoen is on the same page.
Hot tip do not go for a cut out when we are parked on the oppostion's tryline. No buffer zone..feed the guy on the burst or fring up...and you'll be the man MACCA and not WHAKKA! |

McCaw must start- after his injury layoff during the S14, he came back and played like he'd never been away.
And to even consider Donald?
Gimmie a break. |

| I agree with you about slade lark, another season or two and we'll see him in black. Brett is flakey at best, huge talent, far too big an ego |

funny I was wondering what the chances of Aaron Cruden getting a call would be, I dont think there is any doubt we will see him in the super14 next year.
But right now he has not even played super14 rugby. O'Conner has been around the super14 for a couple of years now.
But leading the u20's to win the way they did has given the guy a lot of stock which cant be ignored.
But as Aussie have done with O'Conner we need to chuck the odd young guy in and see if he floats. Cant do them much harm and can give them an early boost to their carriers.
Sometimes wonder with NZ if the whole "nanny state" thing is a factor. need to stop being soft and giving things a go.
Also think it's a bit of a shame Slade did not get more of a chance at 10 in the super14, his kicking being off was the biggest factor in that. Was a realy shame I perosnally thing he has much more tallent than Brett. |

A lot of people have suggested Nonu at 13.
One thing in rugby that you have to remember is that 13 is probably one of the most technical positios defensively on the field. It is why Nonu has been shown up on many occasions in the past at 13. He is best at 12 if the NZ game plan suits.
Donald at 10. and McCalister at 12. opens up more options. I would have Conrad at 13 with no Kahui at the moment. Also So'oialo at 8. |

I doubt this will be it but it's what I'd try...
1, Woody
2, Hore
3, Afoa
4, Ross
5, Thorn
6, Kaino
7, McCaw
8, Read
9, Leonard
10, Donald
11, Sivivatu
12, Toeava
13, Nonu
14, Masanga
15, Mils
16, Tialata
17, Mealamu
18, Evans
19, Rodney
20, Weepu
21, MacAlister
22, Jane
in the backs the Chiefs combinations in the back 3 and 9 & 10
really need the forwards to do the job at the breakdown, I think that area will improve with Hore and McCaw back in.
swaping nonu and Toeava around is a big call but I think Toeava will be better at taking some pressure off Donald, and it's a bettter position for him too. 13 should not be a problem for Nonu, he plays more like a centre anyway.
Getting toeava closer to the ruck and nonu further out would be a good experiment for me. nonu will have more power to bust through backline tackles and Toeava has a running game that should be too much for the forwards in closer to the ruck.
Persist with Kerian at 8, he's done a good job and should get better. |

| Good point, BUT sometimes we must be graceful in defeat. Yes, i'm South African and my culture tells me to ALWAYS accept defeat in a graceful way. If we do that, winning will be so much sweeter. I've never met a person in my live that likes loosing but if it's for a better cause, then let's loose 2 or 3 and then we will start winning. I'm a coach and i used this mentality on my u/12 team it took me up to u/16 to be the best in our league. |

Horak We understand what you are saying and it does make sense. But and it's a big BUT, The NZ public and AB tradition will not tolerate losses in this way. This is the biggest problem that the coaches and selectors face. How do we build a champion team and still win 85% of our games?
We don't like to make it easy for our team. |

| I'm not a KIWI supporter at all BUT i love a good game of rugby. With the kiwi team like it is now, my gut is that you will not make it this tri nations. It will be a fight between Aussies and the Bokke. BUT this might be a start of a new team that will take 2 or 3 years to be at the top. Ones they are at the top, they might stay there for 2 or 3 years. Just pick young good players, work with them (even if thery loose every game). Look what england did in 2000. They started to build a team and by 2003 they were the best team in world rugby. The took allot of losses at the start of 2000 and 2001 but then they started to win. |

1. Woodcook
2. Hore
3. McGougan (He is an absolute mongrel of a man, just what we need)
4. Donnelly (yes I know Brad is the man, but at 34 it could be time to blood a younger man)
5. Ross
6. Kaino
7. Whitelock (learn from PDV's mistake of playing Burger)
8. Setephano ( I can't understand why he isn't there already)
9. Cowan
10. Aaron Cruden ( talent is talent, and he has an abundance, and best of all he ooozes with confidence, throw him in the deep end, it is working for OZ with James O'Connor)
11. Sivivatu
12. McAlister (having Mac at 12 would help the young fella at 10 out)
13. Nonu
14. Ranger
15. Dagg
16. De Malmanche 17. Newlands 18. Thorn 19. Vito 20. McCaw 21. Weepu 22. Muiliaina |

I could be wrong (I have been known to be on many occasions :-)), but IMO we are going to struggle in the TRI with either Donald or McAlister as 5/8. Neither one has the criteria that we need for an AB 5/8. McAlister is a 2nd 5/8 who hasn't played 5/8 in 2 seasons, Donald is a 5/8 who at S14 level is a good player, but at international level struggles. IMO the single biggest factor to their failures is "confidence". I think Donald will forever feel he is just a 'stop gap' until Carter is back, and McAlister is not really happy running the whole show, he likes a little more space and time to maneuver.
GH is copping a lot of criticism at the moment because the players we have available for selection are not doing the job and stepping up. Should we just "concede" the TRI this year? nah nah, not in our makeup, but i do think there needs to be some radical change in the player dept., not the coaches, GH proved what a genius he was last year so no matter what anyone says the problem does NOT lie with him and our assistants.
People will detest my opinion because they hate the idea of "giving the jersey away", but it is my opinion that plenty of players have worn black that have been undeserved. It ain't going to happen but what I would like to see is some of the younger talent we have identified as future AB's to be thrown into the cauldron now, with that in mind i would love to see this team start in the TRI.

Hosea Gear has been going well actually. He usually gets a try per game. Got 3 tries against Ja'pan the other day. |

I'm not downplaying the Wallabies as they look sharp and confident.
But they also look like swaggering school bullies who have only beaten up weedy nerds and don't realize the tough kids are waiting around the corner. |
