I concur with nalaleba
Cruden springs to mind, maybe Carter at second five, Cruden at flyhalf, something to look in to in the future perhaps. |

Cut the ex-pats loose; they had their day and made their decision to quit NZ rugby for the $$$$$$$$'s. We have got one 'shining' star back, McCallister, and the northern hem. style of rugby has ruined him. Since returning he's be below Air NZ comp rugby.
I suppose we can get Nick Evans back; with a bag full of blood capsules.
Sorry you would be hopefuls but we have who we need to do the job right here now. |

I can't agree with this " not enough time to blood players before the World Cup" thing. Our two best teams ,87 and 95,had a sprinkling of new players in the squad.
On the other hand , the nature of World Cup rugby at the business end of the competition is a battle of attrition (as a spectacle these games are pretty boring , it's only the occassion that makes them interesting )and there's no substitute for experience in these type of games. I guess at the end it comes down to getting the mix right ; but new players can add to the "vibe" of a squad by their "new enthusiasm" |

I was just thinking back to when we dominated the French in 2004, something like 45/6 If I remember correct, the day Woody, Kevin and Hayman annonunced themselves to the world through their powerhouse scrummaging displays and never looked back from that game, well we know now that, Hore is the established incumbent, Woody is still seen as a vital cog in our tight 5 and Hayman left us after RWC 2007, but that tight 5 of that time was excellent |

Woody. Mealamu. Hayman....Besides Jack. Ali Williams.
Thats a great looking tight 5 IMO. |

Hayman would be the only certainty.
Mauger might be, but need to see him in a full season of S14 to see if up to it.
The big test about players coming back will be to see how Chris Jack goes. Because he is a forward it could be a lot harder so if a forward can do got to think a back can do it too. |

bit behind beat me to it, but I also would have Mauger on the bench covering 1st in a heart beat, anyone see how he ran his club team around from 1st5 with 2 18 yr olds outside him to beat the boks a week or so ago.
"I'm aware of all the up and comers but there's precious little time to get them ready for 2011".
We have 2 whole S14's and an NPC, not to mention the AB tests in between before the WC. That is more than enough time to bring someone through like Cruden, Robinson or Slade.
Evans is a very good player and would have been a long term AB if guys like DC and Mils weren't around, but like Larks said he was the one who left with the biggest chip on his shoulder saying that was it for NZ rugby for him.
If he came back that would be great, but with the talent we have coming through at the moment at 1st5 that is one area that if I was a selector I would be comfortable with the talent coming through. |

I agree RC as I said in another thread, I think there were times when there really was nothing between Carter & Evans
But if all the players that have left Evans is the one who basically said NZ rugby and the all blacks were behind him and he was not interested in returning. |

| I'd have Aaron mauger on the bench as fly half back up to Carter, if he came back to NZ , his experience would be invaluable, not to mention he's an astute player with a great rugby brain, Mauger would be ideal. |

( I think there are more talented guys coming through that would debutise better under DC than Evans would.)
Who are these players and how do you know- seeing as they have played no tests in Black?
At the moment we have Carter and Donald - yes Donald, not some 18 year old wunderkind waiting to rush out and take over- Donald.
I'm aware of all the up and comers but there's precious little time to get them ready for 2011.
Evans is the logical choice, if he were to come home.
Am I the only one who can remember how good he was as Carters understudy?
(Because I'm thinking I am).
And Mauger was great but Nonu has made him redundant- even if he was still in NZ, he'd probably be a bench warmer by now. |

| One of the main things that I am looking to this S14 is to see how Chris Jack handles himself . With so many others tried and done OK while he's been away ..... intriguing |

Yes renee my friend
.....how correct you are, experience is key.
Carl Hayman, Chris Jack and Aaron Mauger, 3 Wise men who should be welcomed back into the all black fold with open arms.

A bunch of young inexperienced guys won't win us the WC, not one of the teams that have won it over the years have been dominated by young guys. They all have had older, experienced guys that had long term combinations in place.
IMO the more top players that have gone north that come home the better, it can only help our depth and experience.
Of the guys that have gone and aren't yet playing back in NZ I would say only Hayman, Jack, Mauger and Evans are realistic chances to be in an AB WC squad.
Of those 4 I htink Evans is the least likely, I think there are more talented guys coming through that would debutise better under DC than Evans would. |

Good points about Mac gvt- I'm a big fan but will be the first to admit he's been a shadow of himself since coming back- Nonu is unchallenged atm.
Hopefully, a good season of S14 will sharpen McAlister up and get him back to being the great player he can be.
As to the list- I've already mentioned this in another thread but what the hell- Hayman (no brainer) and Evans (the blacks need a backup for Carter who is not fkn Donald)- the rest (including Jack) are yesterdays men and should stay out- NZ needs to develop new players for beyond 2011 and there are plenty coming through and bringing back a bunch of ex- ABs will only make prospects thinner for the young blokes (and several of them would undoubtedly bugger off north as a result). |

| Mcallistar is not the player he was when before he left and i would put Tamiti Ellison and benson Stanley before Mcallistar and most definitely Sam Tuitupou i hope Macallistar proves me wrong because at the moment he would be the 4th or fifth top 2nd five in the country...MAA NONU is light years ahead of him. |

| Carl Hayman and Nick Evans has more of a chance than the others making The ABs because Props mature at there position at the late 20s and early thirties where Hayman is and a first five is protected by his loosies and half back during most of the game and tend to have a longer shelf life than other backs if you know what i mean.Evans can play first five until hes 31-32yrs at the top level |

| he might've just left but i would rate Mose Tuiali'i ahead of the currrent crop of 8's. All round he would be my second choice behind Lauaki with 3rd Waldrom. Read is a lightweight and the NH teams are showing the Sth why lightweights have no place in WC tournies. |

Just wondering If any of you guys would care to add your thoughts to who you think has a realistic chance of coming back to New Zealand to push their claims for a RWC spot or who you would like to see come back, I understand the All black selectors have given overseas players who are willing to come home, to at least make a move before the beginning of next years Air NZ Cup around may/june I think
Just recently Luke Macalister has returned home and has recaptured his all blacks jersey, Chris jack is another player returning via saracens/western province |
