Played soccer prior to turning 12, it's a great game. Can be physical at times but you need a great level of fitness, skill and most of all vision to play the game, from everyone on the field. Love the Rugby as well, requires more physical strength and a high skill level as well, but not from everyone on the field, you can specialise, there's a position there for everyone from the popo's to the tall timber, everyones got a shot.

Soccer is globally the more recognised game and thats great for soccer. But rugby is also doing well and is trying to grow the game. I think more kids are playing soccer than rugby, but when they turn into teenagers the rugby regime in most secondary schools will claim them as per usual when they have filled out. Both sports are great to play and test you in different ways. People try to respect each sport and the pioneers that played them from pele' to colin meads.

Just having a wee skim thru this thread, & noticed alexhmac's post regarding how more boys are playing soccer than rugby, because mummys dont want their little 'snookums' to get hurt playing rugby. Hahaha that's SO true! I've had nephews who started out playing soccer, & then turned to rugby later on. One nephew in particular, joined a soccer team, played 2 games, & then wanted to play rugby, because soccers for 'pu$$y s' (his words, not mine). I myself, don't actually mind watching a bit of the Pommy premiere league & FA cup every now & then, but I'm all rugby thru to the core, so I'm lookin forward to the wobblies getn the shyte kicked out of them on sat. Go The Blacks!!!

No, no you are the voice of reason. This thread is for extremist wharfie. He has rugbyphoebia, comes from his Dutch upbringing. The only cure is for him to go back to his overseas childhood and discover what event triggered this anti-Kiwi attitude. Was he forced to come here? By teasing him we can make him overcome the stigma of realising the world is neither flat or round but oval shaped. He wants a world where the ball goes straight and the masses leave simple lives but get to act like real men after the game by doing what they aren't allowed to do in the sport they are forced to live with. They get aggressive. Only those that have broken out of those restraints can understand that. That is why they came here to get away from the class society where the poor people were never educated. It is also a fear of the oval- a sexual hangup that he must overcome and he must stop using as Madonna said, "the hand of God" to bring about his own self gratification whenever he watches soccer. For example the slightest remark can bring about an underserved over-reaction. We know this is a soccer thread but it is the only live one going and only by discussing "All Black strategies for the future" can it survive, such is the apathy.I read somewhere both all white/ferns teams are o/seas but so what none cares?

Fella's you really need to broaden your minds and enjoy both sports. I went to Spain in '82 and watched NZ have a real go at winning those games and now go to the Phoenix, then I've been to Twickers and all test grounds here with the AB's and watch the Wgtn teams. I thoroughly enjoy both sports for the excitement they give us and the differences in the crowds that watch them. Both codes have a tremendous number of countries that play off in their regional qualifiers for either world cup and whether it's Georgia at the rugby or Trinidad and Tobago at the soccer they're representative of achieving the dreams that we all have and encourage our kids to aspire to. Good one the Phoenix over the Mariners finally and watch out Aussie tommorrow !

Re:All Black strategies for the future Reply to this message
The NZ football team in the 1982 World Cup did more for NZ than all the all blank teams in the farcically named rugby 'world cup' ( haha I always laugh when I see it called a rugby ""world"" cup hahahaha ).
The reason is obvious.
Has that neanderthal figured out yet he is on the football messageboard?!
Like iron filings to a magnet, the 'intellectually challenged' go to rugby!

Correct!!!
Sky often ring, trying to give me the rugby channel for free, but I tell them politely "thanks, but no thanks".
More NZers watch the Cooking channel than the rugby channel!!

Re:All Black strategies for the future Reply to this message
I don't have to "convince NZ to like football" - it is already played by more people in NZ than rugby.
Tennis is also a truly world sport - played in most countries. Why would I want to cancel the Olympics? It is popular throughout the world with all countries competing.
Rugby is the odd one out here - only taken seriously by a handful of countries and ignored by the rest of the world. I would never want to ban rugby. After all, those neanderthals who are too overweight and clumsy to play football should play some sport, so why not rugby? Just try to understand that being highly ranked in an obscure sport really means zip. Compete on a truly world stage eg tennis, football, athletics, swimming, and be proud, or hide behind some obscure sports like rugby and the other sports that NZ seems to like, and remain living in your own little world of make-believe.

Re:All Black strategies for the future Reply to this message
I know soccer has more players in NZ dwarfie but I bet most of those little kids that are made to play because mummy too scared to have them play rugby go home andwatch the All Blacks not the All Whites my friend.
And you seem to think that if a sport is not as popular as soccer anywhere in the world then its not worth playing. Why don't you write a letter to the olympic committee and have them cancel the games coz its not as popular as soccer, and cc to the WTA coz tennis ain't as popular as soccer either. Hey, maybe your friends in the Labour party could just ban rugby altogether then you wouldn't have to try and convince NZ to like soccer they can be made to? Like you said yourself, rugby is only world famous in NZ so that means you have a whole wide world you can move to to keep happy mate. Au revoir.

Re:All Black strategies for the future Reply to this message
alexhmac aka einstein, if those largely populated countries have as much rugby players as NZ does soccer players ( very doubtful) then percentage wise, bearing in mind the size of their populations, your rugby players are in a very very tiny proportion.
More people in NZ play football than rugby, remember. Ouch!! That hurts doesn't it!
Can't wait to see the mighty Germans or Chinese or Indians or Russians playing! I have said before, any country should be able to get 15 neanderthals for a team, the real test is how it is supported in said country. Sadly for you, there is little support for rugby in the world apart from a handful of countries.
I have worked in many countries, but in most of those countries, never seen a rugby field or ball never mind anyone playing it on the beach/park etc.
Just face it and move on - rugby is really only world famous in NZ!!

Hey alexhmac all those countries I mentioned may well be members of the "International" rugby board but ...they don't have enough people interested to field a team ???
What's your point? They are members but don't play? Nobody cares? Rugby has not exactly 'taken off' in those countries has it? Your point is????????????????????
So you don't really know what you're talking about!!

Re:All Black strategies for the future Reply to this message
Now really! This is getting too much. You have insulted another of my icons! The muckracking over gumboots is intolerable. Those dutchies and their clogs were banned from rugger and singing on the ball, on the ball years ago and the Chinese resorted to firing rockets and you know they can't pronounce Wugby correctly. These proceedings are at an end, we can't find a level playing field let alone irony and magots. At least these parents are communicating with each other.I remember that game in Victoria, so deep down you are a Rugby supporter. I can't even remember one game of NZ soccer! Good on you bro a bit of that Kiwiness is coming out of you, don't stiffle it now. On the ball through winger 3/4s and all. Did you get caned at school for forgetting the words, come on man spit it out don't be ashamed.Let us agree to disagree.

Re:All Black strategies for the future Reply to this message
""I don't want Rugby to be popular in the same way as it is in Europe or in South America"" Erm, no danger of that!!!!!!
I seriously doubt you know what you are talking about!! You say ""Rugby is what used to bring all races together"" Huh ??? Oh yeah, the games in the Domain between the Chinese and the Dutch were real classics weren't they?!
Football you say is simple but you demonstarte a real lack of knowledge. So what if a game finishes 0-0? It just means it was an even game - which is common in football because so many countries play it seriously. I remember the all blanks going on tour in Aussie and beating a team from Victoria (?) by about 98-3. Wow, do you call that exciting?? I don't know any women who teach football to our kids. It may happen but it aint the norm.
You just can't grasp the fact that countries like Germany etc have seen rugby, and totally rejected it on the grounds that it is a ridiculous sport. Ditto with gumboot throwing.
So a penalty and sending off ... big deal. What about the cripples from rugby scrums, the head high tackles etc etc.
A lot of countries would jail men for groping each other like that. I agree the intimidation of refs is awful but...it happens. There is so much at stake.
"Poor sportsmanship" etc etc What about in NZ rugby where the spectator parents brawl with each other? You really don't know what you are talking about. And that is the reason you like rugby. Neanderthals and rugby are like iron filings and magnets.

Re:All Black strategies for the future Reply to this message
I don't want Rugby to be popular in the same way as it is in Europe or in South America.Nor do I want to have a 4th rate international team as my role model for our young. All I hear is the accent of your class warfare upbringing. I said rugby was invented by the poms, I know rugby is facing hardtimes but that makes me sad and is nothing to be proud of or feel superior about. Rugby is what used to bring all races together, soccer doesn't do that in this country. Indicative of our weak liberal soccer-society is the lack of men teachers in our schools-women teach soccer to our kids, because its simple and they don't need to know the rules.I don't think that is good for character building for NZ boys. You just don't get it do you? Maybe if Germany had a decent Rugby team we would of had fewer wars. There I go, one more nod of your "adshead" and you're off again. What sort of sport is it that tolerates blatant tackling from behind in the penalty box and then awards a freekick? What sort of beautiful game is that? In Rugby we'd send the guy off and award a penalty goal. The intimidation of referees is despicable.Do you support such a sport? Is that the popularity you admire? Soccer is too gutless to stop it. There is no decency in your game, it encourages poor sportmanship without punishment. It has no morality. I don't want Kiwis learning that. Must be consequences. And boring penalty shootouts and 1 all draws and nil alls -give me a rest....I couldn't name one All whites player. How many All Blacks do you know?
