Reality check , you really do need a reality check.

Horwhenua and Hibiscus coast are not world class sides. There are about 120 countries that play rugby. And US Soccer is very unpopular. They have been playing on TV for some time but are not even in the top 10 for viewed sports on cable. Lacross may actually be more popular in the US.

Re:LETS TALK ABOUT NZ FOOTBALL Reply to this message
Of course Waitakere and Miramar football clubs etc are not world class clubs. Who said they were?
Football is global and there is a lot bigger and better than them.
But for example Horowhenua and Hibiscus Coast rugby clubs are close to 'world' class because most countries do not play rugby and NZ sets the standard, so most NZ clubs can be called 'world class' because there is no benchmark.
Like a whale stranded in a puddle, NZ is just a big fish/mammal in a small pond. It is sad how overseas visitors see NZ as having a huge chip on its shoulder. 'We are to small to compete globally in football so we will choose an obscure sport and become good at that'. Just like how USA are world champions at Gridiron/American bullrush ....because nobody else cares about that sport. Now in USA football, aka "soccer", is extremely popular.

Re:LETS TALK ABOUT NZ FOOTBALL Reply to this message
what should nz football do to help boost our profile to the world without being envious towards other sporting codes that are entrenched in nzs sports history?

do we sit still and glorify the all whites of 1982? or do we move on and try boost our youngsters who are coming up the ranks? it seems our best go to europe or something like that - esp in the modern times. yet we still havent been to the finals since 1982. hopefully it will change.

with the phoenix in town - whats the hope of our nation when they buy hasbeens from the uk and south america and to a certain extent australia? its sad really.

we should be thankful to australia for pulling out of oceania. or else we would be sitting here watching waitakere united and miramar. world class clubs yeah?

Re:LETS TALK ABOUT NZ FOOTBALL Reply to this message
come on football fans, lets not get immature here and address the real issue. in order for nz football to go further we need to leave the envy behind. instead of talking about manchester united and other foreign clubs lets get our own competition out there for everyone to see.

one poster talks about the airnz cup cutting teams. thats funny because this is a soccer forum - not a rugby one. you actually forgot about the super 14, and the all blacks domestic season. something football nz should really envy.

i know its hard to know whats going on in regards to nz football. because really - we need to step up our game. too many foreigners are being brought into nz football. just because a players last name originates from south america doesnt mean hes the answer to our football woes. we hardly have any idols to look up to. only ones of note is rufer and more recently ryan nelson. but even the latter seems to enjoy sitting overseas while our all whites struggle to get the crowds in.

come on football fans - give us some suggestions.

Re:LETS TALK ABOUT NZ FOOTBALL Reply to this message
younoit27 says "everytime the All Blacks play the whole country stands still andt watches."
Not true!! I make a poin of going for a walk or a drive when the all blacks are live on TV and I can assure you there are thousands of others shopping, walking, driving, cycling etc with no apparent interest!
Maybe because you are indoors watching TV, you really are out of touch.
The country definitely does not stand still for an all black game.

Re:LETS TALK ABOUT NZ FOOTBALL Reply to this message
i think the numbers argument is meaningless because the support for Football isn't there! they can have all the numbers they want but when nobody watches the games it doesn't matter. Also i would say most kids who play Football will eventually turn to Rugby as they get a little bit older anyway... A guy on radio sport said his kids played Football but didn't support it at all and were way more interested in watching Rugby of League then a Football game. Also another problem i see with Football (especially the Pheonix) is that 90% of the players are foreigners which to me doesn't make them very attractive to support when there are hardly any NZers in the team.

Re:LETS TALK ABOUT NZ FOOTBALL Reply to this message
like i mentioned before , APPARENTLY more new zealanders play football than rugby. its funny that is the only theme we come across when footballers talk numbers. but the number are there to see.

i wish for the day that when an all whites team play - the stadiums are full.

i hope we dont have to wait for a 45kg pommy to come here and get us football fans off our bottoms.

come on nz - lets stand and go but some tickets to the football matches!!!

Re:LETS TALK ABOUT NZ FOOTBALL Reply to this message
Harry, first of all rugby only became professional around 96 when the average salary was $30-60k. Now All Blacks are paid between $200 -500k per year . There is a particular All Black who earned three times more than that for 6 months. In New Zealand an avearge contracted npc player earns much more than a professional soccer player . The big money contracts have just started emerging and im afraid they are going to go much like the ridiculous soccer salaries. Especially seeing that rugby is a gladiatorial game and physically much ,much, much more demanding and only a few can actually play at a high level .

But at the end of the day, Rugby will always be the winner because as the case everytime the All Blacks play the whole country stands still and watches.

Re:LETS TALK ABOUT NZ FOOTBALL Reply to this message
Ok since you guys say you want to have a reasonable discussion then lets have one! Why is it that some Football fans feel the need to put down any other sport because football is the "world" game and everything else is inferior? If i moved to England i wouldn't be going on to Football forums and posting inane dribble about how Rugby is better than football and they were all mad for liking such a rubbish sport! I think you should respect that Rugby is the number one sport in NZ and football is a long way down the list. My response to the football is global thing is well duh like everyone didn't know that already!

Re:LETS TALK ABOUT NZ FOOTBALL Reply to this message
NZ excels at a sport nobody cares about except.....NZ!
Big deal!
I'd rather be a small fish in a global ocean than a huge fish swimming by myself in a tiny puddle.
I know that is not what you want to hear, but sadly for you and the others living in Fantasy Land, it is true.
I never denied rugby has a large following in NZ. But the large following stops there.

Re:LETS TALK ABOUT NZ FOOTBALL Reply to this message
Yes well your posts are always erased, and will always be erased because you try to wind everyone up by saying soccer
is global rugby is not. So you had better get use to all your pathetic threads being deleted.

this is New Zealand, and this is a NZ message board.

and in this country Rugby has always been number 1 and will always be number 1

you my friend are definitely a minority

Re:LETS TALK ABOUT NZ FOOTBALL Reply to this message
One All White/Blackburn Rovers player earns in a year what the entire all black, NZ sevens, and junior all black squads earns in a year and then still has extra.
Does that not suggest something?!!!!!
