Mhol, immigrants play football because football is a global sport. Rugby is not! I have seen a bunch of 3-4 kiwis in Spain trying to convince the locals that rugby is the game to play. They were throwing a rugby ball between them. The locals were looking in much the same way we can't help looking at a hideous deformed or really fat person. And needless to say, the locals ignored rugby, as most of planet earth does, and resumed their kickabout with a real football.
Kiwis have a far too inflated opinion of themselves. How hard is it to be so highly ranked in sports like rugby, league, netball, sheepshearing etc when most of the world does not play or have any interest in said 'sports'?
And if you think rugby is for real men, google 'IGRAB' and you may be in for a shock! |

Khatru-No skills in rugby?
I saw a dog on AFV and even the dog picked up the soccer ball. It's called evolution. Your goalie is the only half intelligent player on the field, because he has evolved to pick up the ball.
Apart from a few fisticufs recently, I much prefer the manliness and discipline of a rugby player who walks off the field if found to be guilty by the ref of unfair play. Not your soccer louts who harass and intimidate the ref, Game after game I see some idiot, who is a role model for you, challenging the ref whether it be in the penalty box or for a foul tackle. Not so the rugby player he accepts right or wrong and goes off.
Is soccer the type of game you want in this country? Might be acceptable in your father's country where it goes hand in hand with corruption but I pray it never takes over here. The problem is that 80% of teachers in this country are women and soccer is easy for them to play and coach and rules are simple. That is why soccer has taken off in this country another example of immigrants coming here who have no sense of tradition and have little desire to mix in with true NZers. I see them every weekend, all talking foreign languages on various sports grounds.Good on them at least they are not sitting on their backsides and trying to keep fit,but honestly they are foreigners and will always remain so. |

| More correctly, Rugby 'USED' to cater for all sizes and shapes. Now, there's no point in playing unless you're built like a brick dunny because the age when backs tackled backs and forwards tackled forwards is long gone. Today's backs weigh more than the forwards of the pre 1970's eras. The other problem is that there is an element creeping into the game that determines that if someone is better than you then you 'smash' them. Just watch what happened to Daniel Carter last Saturday to see the proof of that. Having been involved in school sport for almost 40 years there is also a further interesting side-issue developing. Schools that run sports academies are finding that the Rugby players in the academies are increasingly from the lower end of the academic spectrum, while those for cricket and soccer tend to be your above average ability pupils. That statistic also helps explain the drop-off in playing numbers for those two codes - once they reach senior levels at school they are pressured to achieve the top year 13 grades in NCEA, Scolarship and Cambridge exams, often the the detriment of their sporting ambitions. |

| What's there to save? It's doing quite nicely for a code that has to compete in a sport which is the main sport in all countries of the world! We are now starting to make the finals in various age competitions, so hopefully that will continue on. The only problem is that every other country in the world is also trying to do the same thing - so it's difficult to be number 1. |

| In most countries in the world Rugby is played by men who haven't got enough talent with their feet so they use their hands. In New Zealand it is actually the most popular winter code in terms of playing numbers. Check out the stats at Sparc! |

| Soccer - Bah! My son tried soccer at aged 8. The pommie coach had already decided his son was the best in the team so put him as captain and he played the whole game every game. He decided my son and a couple of others should stay on the side line for whole games or make up for the missing players on the other teams. Never again the Soccer culture sucks!!!!!!!! |
