"a great save" when the ball is struck right at the keeper.
The keeper couldn't have got out the way if he tried, and he is a professional as well!! If the keeper did not stop it, he should be sacked.
Brian Moore from ITV (?) was always saying "great/fantastic save" when anyone could have saved it. He was the worst commentator ever.

'he's covered every blade of grass on the pitch today'... in praise of a hard working player. its usually because they need to cover all the pitch area because their first touch is shyte!

How about when a shot hits the woodwork, the commentator says something like " one less coat of paint and it was a goal". That may have been the case once with a shot that really did miss because of a coat of paint, but now with any shot that touches a post/crossbar this phrase pops up.

Most liked and despised football cliches.
I hate the commentators saying " on the stroke of half time..." which refers to anything from the 41st minute to the actual half time whistle.
