Yeah, I love rugby so much that even though I live in Wgtn, I couldn't be bothered going to the "world famous" rugby 7's. Funny how you claim to love rugby yet are here on the message boards instead of watching the rugby 7's on TV!!!

shows you how european rugby is desperate.....justin marshall,carlos spencer etc....,ryan nelsen and simon elliot to name a few are good players playing in the epl,where they get paid more than any hasbeen rugb y player
who goes to the uk to make himself look half decent against cr@p brit players.
also football players have to qualify for world cups,not like rugby teams where they....wait for it....get invited!!!. |

Then why are not so many kiwis going overseas getting contracts? Thats because we are not good at it even though a lot of new zealanders play football.
It shows how european clubs are that desperate that they get players like ryan nelson and simon elliot.
Why? Cos there is no money in nz's domestic competition for football. |

| Hi,Loved football,played Rugby,Cricket wish there had been one dayers in my day,Hockey wish they had, had proper hockey pads for the Goalie instead of Cricket Pads what a bruise,Had a go at AFL man those men are fit.Plus,TT,Gymnastics and a few others.Managed to be a rep,for Ciry of birth and county in two.Then didn't sign pro. to play Football.They all started seriously from when? About 12 I'd say.Still Love them all at 77-7/12 ths Those kind of threads that Plonker started we really are mugs for answering him,including me.Bet his only sport was ???? or bookies runner well north of lets say London. Ronnie Barker had the right answer 'RASPBERRY".There's a clue there for my mates. |

Europe???? Do you mean the UK or small parts of France because nobody else in Europe cares an iota about rugby!!And rugby "big dollars" is miniscule compared to an average footballers salary.
For over 20 years we have been told how rugby is "becoming popular" in American colleges. ZZZZZ, still waiting! Meanwhile football is now the most popular sport in the US on numbers of player participation.
Of course in America where there are more than the average number of fat useless clumsy oafs who quite like touching/being touched by other men, it may pick up a few players. Rugby is not global and never will be. If it was global a tiny country like NZ would not be so highly ranked. There is only a handfull of countries that take rugby seriously and the rest really don't care! |

I have never said rugby should be stopped, just pointed out how ignored it is around the world. Myopic, ignorant, arrogant and ho.mophobic, now there is a combination of talents your mum would be proud of.
People it does not matter diddly squat how popular your favourite sport is. It does not matter diddly squat if others like you favourite sport. It does not matter if other like to throw barbs at you due to jealousy of your place in the eyes of the world or country.
All that matters is that you and your friends, and fellow sports fans enjoy your sport.
Using sport as a vehicle to attack others is amazingly stupid. Sport is to enjoy. If you find a sport you don't like, fine, wish those that do enjoy it a good day and move on.
No one give two wharks if other people don't like their sport (hell I certainly don't). That is not how being a sports fans works.
So to all those soccer fans out there, knock yourselves out and enjoy the moment as it is a good moment for you in NZ.

No aldb, I'd say the ABs are to rugby what Australia is to boomerang throwing.... ie champions at very obscure sports that most of planet earth has NO interest in.
The inbred hicks on these threads saying football is only for gays yet forget to check out 'IGRAB' on google or the recent Lions captain admitting he fondled and groped in scrums...

I think a lot of the posted comments are missing some of the fundamental points for the following reasons.
Rugby is a great game, and the ABS are to rugby what Brazil is to Football. I love watching the ABS..
First football, (nor does rugby), doesn't haven't violent fans, rather they are firms; ie pompey657, lil guveners, urchins, soul crew, headhunters, icf, zulu, yamyam army etc. These are not the patrons clubs want at their games.
All clubs in europe have these, it is a plague within the supporter base of the game but they should never be termed fans.
We also don't have 57 million people so are unlikely to have the means to support a league (or have the generational, ethnic, inter city rivalry or entrenched generational support).
Hence we have the phoenix in the A league, after two failed Akld attempts, believe me 7 thousand nix fans in full voice at the ring of fire is louder than 20 thousand hurricanes fans.
New Zealand is changing its demographics and as such the traditional rugby ground support is shifting, football is becomming a more attractive option, even becomming more sucessful when the game was shifted in New Zealand back to its spiritual home..Wellington and passionate supporter base Wellington.
The support base will only continue to grow, success breeds association.
I would suggest that football fans in New Zealand are comming of age and have been provided with credible outlets for their support and quirky songs. Phoenix and finally now the All Whites..
May both codes prosper in New Zealand.. |

| Hi I am a fanatic football supporter ie MANCHESTER UNITED. I am a pommie I have been in NZ 25 yrs. I have yet got to go to a match that really supports and enthusium. Apart from your 1 shot for glory. Which the crowd shows they do appreciate football.But I am very sorry until the all whites get some more serious games against top teams I think that it will take a long time to get to there dream goal.And to your remark about it will be another 100yrs before England win the cup. I think your dream of NZ winning it,will be a much more length of time.By the way I am 72 rs old. And have supported Man Utd since I was9 yrs old. And been through all there wins and successes. I get up to see every one of there games on Sky. Will the day come when a NZ football team commands an audience of 76,000 fans to every game???? Like you I only hope that football commands the attention of all NZ fans,and takes over from RUGBY. |
