wes i completely agree. ray warren is excellent - he practically jumps out of his seat when something happens and it gets you excited too. Sky needs to get people like that in. I heard a super 14 game this year on the radio as I was driving, cant remember who, but the commentator was much better than anyone sky has..and this is on the radio! Jed Thian from the Alternative Rugby Commentary is also top class. Commentators are not there to just say whats happening, they are part of the entertainment package. Wakeup sky!

:-) Now that Sky television's number one commentator John Drake has passed, I like Ken Laban's commentary, great statistical information and player knowledge, he gets two thumbs up from me.

the best commentary is one where you can close your eyes listen to what they are saying and be able to picture it, Ray Warren - NRL/League Tests. Is by far the best in terms of actually commentating on a game. whether it is union or league.

i don't mind the odd side comment from the ex Rep about what might be going on in a certain situation, but can't stand when people like Mex goes totally off tangent and starts to talk about a random situation that sounds more like a sexual act than rugby.

If Skysports NZ think they have a good crop of Rugby commentators, then I suggest they take another look.

Just because you played the game at a national/domestic level that does not automatically mean you are donned with the skills of commentary. Journalists go through specific training and educational institutes to be able to report the facts (well one would hope) and ask the right questions. Reading off stats handed to you from a pleb does not make you a knowledge box. Reading of a list of questions prepared for you by the same pleb does not make you a reporter.

I sat here tonight and watched a dismall game between the Magpies and the Naki. All I heard was Stu Wilson and Melodie Robinson stutter their way through commentary and interviews. I exclude Laban from this as I have heard him for many years commentate all kinds of sport and he has the basics sorted not the same for Wilson & Robinson.

RESEARCH - Prior to going to commentate on a game, one would think that player history would be on the top of the list for any reporter. Info such as whether the player has rep honours at any level, how they played over the last couple of seasons and local info and the likes.

OBSERVATIONS - Why the ref made that call (re; disallowed try at the end of the game for the Naki) Who's coming off/on the field, what injuries have caused the replacement and if there is history behind it.

INTERVIEWS - Reading of a template sticks out like a sore thumb. Quality of questions. Do the questions reveal more than the obvious? Do they lead to what we want to know?

Skysports commentary team score: NONE OF THE ABOVE.

Idiots: Mel Robinson, Stu Wilson, Ian Jones, Frank Bunce, Murray "the Muzza" Mexted (Tawa's finest), Chris Laidlaw (And any other guest commentator which is always an ex rep player. Also the fat idoit with the glasses who I think is the roaming reporter (AKA Bomber))

Average: Ken Laban, Ian Smith, Willie Losei(?)

The learned: Grant Nisbet, Tony Joh
