Its sad to lose 3 tests against the Springboks, but I think we have to take certain things into consideration.
Now that the current Boks are rated as the greatest squad in rugby history, we must not be too critical on our ABs. They played their hearts out and almost won in the closing seconds.
Remember that this year we were coming up against guys that over the past 5 or 6 years have won everything there is in the sport. The won the Rugby World Cup again, the Tri Nations again, the Lions, destroyed England by a record number at Twickenham, beat us twice in a row in our own country and are currently still improving and still have years together as a team.
I think with Dan and Richie fit, we can beat South Africa if they maybe lose some guys to retirement (not likely) or some legends like Smit or Matfield get injured.
I think if we have Fitzpatrick, Cullen and someone like Lomu join our current players then maybe we would have a better chance. But no team can combine past era's so we have to find players like them over the next 2 years if we are going to come close to stopping their world dominance. |

Justinkelv, who voted this team the greatest ever.
They last won the Tri-Nations in 2004 and that was when all three teams won 2 games each. They ended up on top because of points differential. Hardly conclusive.
You seem to forget that this same team lost 19-0 to NZ in SA and were thrashed at home by Australia. They're simply having a good run at the moment.
NZ has had years of good runs averaging only 2 losses a year since 2003. No one has called them 'the greatest ever'. |

tandk12345, no team will win every game they play, but the current Springbok squad was voted the greatest ever because they have won the World Cup already, beaten a great British & Irish Lions team, beat us twice in a row in NZ, thrashed England at Twickenham by a world record score and dominated the Tri Nations and won it for the 2nd time as a squad. The upward curve after all these achievements is what makes their team so great.
Teams are measured by their World Cups and their Springbok team are now dominating and are favourites to win another one. Unheard of to even think that of a team.
We must get proper wings and forwards and then we can compete with those South Africans. They dominated the previous century until the late 90's and are now looking to do the same in this century.
We better learn from them and try to get up to their game. |

Hey shmeads, I acknowledged that they won the Tri-Nations and were having a good run. But to claim they're the best team in history is out of line with their results.
You can't lose by 15 points and be the best team in history. They even lost a game to the Lions and were lucky to win that 2nd test against them. |

How can they be the greatest ever, when they lost by 15 to Australia. They also only beat us by 3 in the the last game after we imploded in the first half.
Once we get Williams and even Jack back; Hayman to lift them and someone who can throw the ball, we'll do a lot bettter.
The SA scrum is really vulnerable. Unfortunately we don't have Hayman and a good scrummaging hooker to exploit that at the moment.
Next year, there should be plenty to choose from in the midfield with Nonu, McAlister, Smith and Kahui available and hopefully some wingers come on or our existing ones find a bit of form.
Just remember that this SA team isn't a lot different to the one we beat 19-0 over there. They're having a good run and have won the Tri-Nations, but we won it in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Nobody suggested that our ABs in those years were the best team in history, despite having an outstanding record.
Gee, SA was lucky to knock over the Lions. It could so easily have been 2-1 to the Lions.
A bit of perspective is required. |
