Re:How often do you travel? Reply to this message
I travel overseas atleast once a year and have made many friends in different countries including Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Africa, Mongolia and Tibet to name a few. Canadian Indians are a deeply spirited and strong willed people, and I would encourage anyone to visit the reservations there. Tibetan people seem very peaceful and extremely self sufficient when it comes to agriculture and horticulture. I encourage travelling as it opens your mind to diverse cultures that exist beyond your own. It's beautiful thing.

thanks bobsjc, will definitely go to Vietnam, been meaning to but you know how it is sometimes, things get in the way ,but it is on my list. I also have a great admiration for the Vietnamese people and that inspires me to go.
Yep, the north certainly will get my interest, from what i,ve heard it is spectacular.

Suggest you get to Vietnam, Stone, fantasic place. We were there for 3 weeks October/November last year. Did the Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh thing but wish we had spent more time in the Northern area as we found Ho Chi Minh city quite Americanised/Westernised, where as the North is so far unspoiled.

Bloody hell even more envious now. A real list, done some of those countries though. Love the story about the cleric I found discussions with Hindu religious men in Singapore and India very illuminating. Pleased to hear there are Muslim clerics that are open minded though I did suspect it.

Re:How often do you travel? Reply to this message
Yep Dan, travel is such an education, and it does open your eyes up to other cultures and i think every Kiwi should do the OE sometime, went to Aussi when i was 17 and it started there, came home then went over to the UK for 2 trips over 5 years, did a fantastic bike trip thru France,Swizerland, Austria, Germany and then back thru France to the UK , worked delivering computers for 2 years or so and the job took me all over England, Wales, Scotland and even Northern Ireland during the troubles ,that was an eye opener. Then worked on an oil rig in the north sea between Norway and Scotland, holidayed in Greece. Europe was good in those days and it was great to zip over to Paris to watch the All Blacks for a weekend trip.UK was great, the Brits treat you good and they are always on for great humour.
Asia is real good as i like the food. Went up thru Malaysia by bus and train, remember having a great conversation with a Muslim cleric about the 'bad' ways of Westerners and we tidied up a few differences on both sides, it was a great leaning experience and we were both better off for it.Went on into Thailand, Hong Kong and a little bit of Southern China. Worked in Samoa a couple of years ago, that was great, real laid back, the way life should be.
Hope i didn,t bore anyone but it is great to have the freedom to go to other countries and cultures, we are pretty lucky and it stays with you for life.
I get a real buzz from just telling people to get of their backsides and go for it.......

Re:How often do you travel? Reply to this message
Stonehook you sound like you love to travel and are lucky enougth to be able to have.

In some European countries it is seen as a citizens social right to have travel experience so it is one of the govt's responsibilties to enable its citizens to travel. I believe we should introduce a similar policy in NZ to the point in the senior years of High School students should have one overseas excursion or at least on to a distant location from their point of orgin in this country to experience an environment totally different from their home environment. I think a number of kids would benefit from such a program. I am sure you have as I have benefited from travelling in helping in understading cultural differences and other persoanl social development.

That's my two cents worth on the subject.

Re:How often do you travel? Reply to this message
used to travel heaps on my own overseas but then i met a great woman and then you build houses and travelling slows down a bit, but as you get down the track a bit we hope to go away every year for a month, went to Brisbane Dec/Jan it was great. We hope to get to Vietnam at some stage, travel from Hanoi down to Ho Chi Minh city. Would also love to go and see the Terracotta Army in Xian in China. Chinese history is amazing, been into Southern China but not long enough.

Re:How often do you travel? Reply to this message
Very thought provoking.

I was one of those Kiwis that went overseas first and was very embarrased everytime I bumped into a person who having been to NZ had seen more of it than I had.

simonrobinson64; I like it. I also go for walks every day [ healthwise, weather permitting]. And that grin you see on the dogs face is because it's taking the p..s and knows that it doesn't have to put up with the crap we do. I'd like to think that every time one cocks it's leg on a tree it thinks it's one of them. Cheers.

Re:How often do you travel? Reply to this message
to xtr365705@. i travel every day.its because like you say the politics have become oppressive. so i like to get away. its very simple for me. i go for a walk through cornwall park. there i am free from the the media and all the bad news . i am in the company of four footed animals like sheep and cattle that i envy for their ignorance. i get jealous when i see a dog walk by with a grin on its face. obviously that dog is not aware of the insane things that go on in the bee hive. it has no idea of the anti smacking bill. so one tree hill park is where i can lose my self and sample the excellent scenery. i see lots of tourists walking through there, and just pretend im one too and nz is far away. its really good for my well being and i get to avoid the stress of airports. sometimes i change my schedule and walk up mt eden hill, there are also lots of tourists there to.

Re:How often do you travel? Reply to this message
My this is a popular posting. I personally like to travel overseas at least once every three years; even if its to Oz. I think it important because of the rapidly changing political scenario that has evolved here over the past 9 years. I go away, have a great time, then come back and notice how terrible the once free open spirited NZ has become.

How often do you make overseas trips? I'd love to travel every year but usually take a couple of years to save up. Oh well, there's plenty of good Kiwi spots to see in between.
